I was spanked when I did something wrong. I had a great relationship with both of my parents and I knew how to behave in public early on because my parents didn't tolerate bad behaviors. I'm perfectly sane, happy and able to control myself without violence or abuse to my kids.

100 years ago, they didn't have serious gangs, drugs, or major society problems. Times have changed and so has the way we treat our children. 91, I agree, it isn't always the answer. That statement in itself suggests it is sometimes the answer. This is one of those times. I don't believe in spanking children unnecessarily, and I think if your child responds to alternative punishments then that's what you should use. Some children however do not respond to that, and until they offer courses on raising children that are accessible through the public health care system then they can't expect people to conform to any particular standard. As such, with really unruly children, spanking is acceptable.

"Ass whooping" is slang, and does not often reflect the severity of the spanking. Often swats are called ass whooping because it's a commonly known term.
