Today, while reading the newspaper, I noticed that an ad had been placed for my job. I asked my boss for a week off so that I could fly home for my father's funeral. No wonder she was so cool with it. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Shark-infested offices
Today, I attended my father’s funeral. I have the week off work, and one of my colleagues is using this time to make a play for my job. I’m not supposed to be checking emails, so I can’t call them out on it until I get back, by which time it may be too late. FML
Today, I asked my boss for a few days off next week, because my grandmother passed away yesterday and I'll need to travel to attend the funeral. His response: "She's dead, you're not. You want time off, then quit." FML
Today, my boss took back my week off because he wants to take a spontaneous Caribbean vacation with his wife, which is "clearly more important" than what I was going to do. I needed that time off so I could be with my Dad in hospice. FML
Nice try
Today, I told my boss that my grandma died to get a day off work, but then my grandma showed up at the office looking for me because she wanted to go shopping. FML
Today, I took a week off work because my father passed away. I was at the funeral home making arrangements when I overheard the owners complaining about how their insurance agent had left them to fend for themselves. I'm their insurance agent. FML
Heartless
Today, I lost my job. Why? Because I'm taking care of my dying mother. My boss actually said, "Well, if she dies today, we can hold your job." FML
Bad timing
Today, on the first occasion I've seen my boss since her brief leave, I brought up how I got to hear all our customers' heartwarming plans for their moms on Mother's Day. Her mother just died. That's why she was on leave. FML
Thanks, I hate it
Today, after I let my job know I needed time off for a friend's funeral a week ahead of time and they declined to approve it, telling me to call in sick, the day of the funeral arrived and I called in sick, only to come back to a write-up and threats of being fired for not getting it approved in advance. FML
Today, I was bored out of my mind at work. I told my coworker he was lucky to be leaving early. I forgot the reason of his early departure was to go to his grandfather's funeral. FML
Challenging
Today, I accidentally showed up 5 minutes late for my shift. My boss mercifully declared that I would not be fired if I called my mother and told her I love her. My mom died 11 years ago. FML

You have the outfit. You have the plot. Now all you need is a shovel and a little upper body strength. Problem solved.

You think she was simply "cool" with it because you haven't found her gloves, mask, and copy of How to Murder an Employee's Father and Get Away With It.

You should advertise an ad for a new boss when he goes on a bereavement leave. That will teach him. My condolence to you and your family.

**** your boss. Resign, get re-hired, tell your boss to go **** himself, then resign again.

Maybe you ought to send your boss to go meet your dad.

Ask you boss about the posting. You have nothing to lose. Perhaps it's not your replacement but an additional worker.

If you get fired for going to your father's funeral you can sue the company, because that is protected by FMLA.

First of all, FMLA has restrictions that OP must satisify in order to receive compensation for this leave. Secondly, FMLA requires the employer to pay the employee. That's not the same thing as requiring the employer to keep the employee.

FMLA protects your position, not your pay. Short/long term disability are choices to ensure partial pay while away from work.

It's surprising that they still use job ads in newspapers

Well they're behind enough to have not realised that it's common decency to tell someone that they are being fired. I'm only surprised that they understand how to write rather than simply drawing on a cave wall.
