Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I accidentally showed up 5 minutes late for my shift. My boss mercifully declared that I would not be fired if I called my mother and told her I love her. My mom died 11 years ago. FML
Today, I found out that my mom called my boss informing him that I am a little behind on some college projects. She felt he should know that she fears I might not be able to graduate on the planned date. My boss had already offered me a permanent job. I may not get that job now. FML
Today, my boss fired me from my job at a local family-owned business. Thanks, mom. FML
Today, I got a call from the office telling me I was fired. When I asked why, my boss explained my mother called and told him I was in a "weak mental state." She thought she was helping me get off for my birthday. Now I have no job. FML
Today, I was making the daily commute to work when suddenly my mother calls me, crying that there's been a death in the family, then abruptly hangs up. I speed home, to find my mother holding the tiny corpse of a fish that she got 2 weeks ago. I got fired for being late to work. FML
Today, at my new job at a funeral home, my boss threatened to fire me if I didn't "lighten the hell up" while dealing with our grieving clients. FML
Today, on the first occasion I've seen my boss since her brief leave, I brought up how I got to hear all our customers' heartwarming plans for their moms on Mother's Day. Her mother just died. That's why she was on leave. FML
Today, I was fired from my job. Why? Because my boss has been dating my newly divorced mother, and he didn't want family get-togethers to be "awkward." FML
Today, I was working when my boss left briefly, leaving me with her elderly, senile mother. Not only did I have to chase her when she ran after a stranger on the road, I turned my back for 5 seconds to do my actual job and she walked off. When my boss returned, I had to tell her I lost her mother. FML
Today, my mother-in-law became my boss. FML

They'd probably let you watch the funeral on Zoom from your desk. Such a compassionate organization!

I would immediately start looking into the labour board. Absolutely don’t let them get away with that.

What were they expecting? "I'll arrange that, it'll be done this morning"?

While I'm totally sympathetic to your situation I'll never understand why people expect their jobs to be held in this kind of situation. It's a business. It doesn't stop because you have other commitments.

that’s exactly why things like FMLA exist actually.

FMLA doesn’t cover all workers. The company has to employ more than 50 people within 75 miles, you have to have worked for at least one year and you have to have worked 24 hours or more per week for you to qualify for FMLA. There are plenty of employers that aren’t obligated under the law to provide leave. But the writer should definitely take this as a sign to find a better, more compassionate employer.

I have a coworker in the same situation. he told the boss he had to go part time. the boss said "sometimes putting your career before your family is more important". our boss sucks.
