Today, my boss took back my week off because he wants to take a spontaneous Caribbean vacation with his wife, which is "clearly more important" than what I was going to do. I needed that time off so I could be with my Dad in hospice. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
I'm an empath
Today, my boss tried to cancel my leave because he’s “taking a mental health break next week and really needs me in the office.” I’m getting married next week and going on a two-week, non-refundable honeymoon, but he needs a mental health break. I had to get HR involved. Snowflake lazy prick. FML
Weekend blues
Today, I got the rest of the week off against my will due to lack of patients. Two weeks ago, I declined my boyfriend's dad's offer to pay for a flight to Panama City, FL for a family vacation this weekend in order to help the staff at work. Now I’m sitting at home and they’re on a beach. FML
Today, despite having my 5-day-leave approved 2 months ago, my boss demanded I return to work in the middle of it. Why? She wants to go on a vacation and no one else is available at such short notice. FML
Today, I asked my boss for a few days off next week, because my grandmother passed away yesterday and I'll need to travel to attend the funeral. His response: "She's dead, you're not. You want time off, then quit." FML
Today, I asked my supervisor if I could take a week off next month to go visit family. He laughed and said, "That's funny, I've put you down for extra time that week, so you can cover my shifts while I go to Spain!" FML
Shark-infested offices
Today, I attended my father’s funeral. I have the week off work, and one of my colleagues is using this time to make a play for my job. I’m not supposed to be checking emails, so I can’t call them out on it until I get back, by which time it may be too late. FML
Just perfect
Today, I finally told my boss that I need a week off to recharge; I presented dates, reasons, and felt brave. He nodded approvingly, then checked my calendar and asked, “Perfect, can you train the new hires that week?” I stared at my triumphant note then mourned my stolen week. Ugh. FML
Today, while reading the newspaper, I noticed that an ad had been placed for my job. I asked my boss for a week off so that I could fly home for my father's funeral. No wonder she was so cool with it. FML
Vacation blues
Today, I set aside an entire week off to watch my parents' house while they went on vacation. I'd only just got here and they'd barely left when the hospital called. My drunk uncle died from a concussion, so my parents cancelled everything. I feel bad for my aunt, but my boss knows where I live, and my dad's an ass. I'm trapped. FML
Bosses gonna boss
Today, I talked to my boss about scheduling my urgently needed surgery. She asked me to wait until after Christmas, and told me that I should use vacation time instead of sick leave. She's also not going to give me the total paid time off my contract specifies, because it's "inconvenient." FML

No. I would have flat out refused. Let your boss explain to HR (and any labor board) why his spontaneous vacation to the Caribbean was more important than approved medical leave. File a grievance. Immediately. And then take your pre-approved time off. Your boss can ******* suck it.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Report your boss to the HR, although that may be unnecessary as, according to your username, he will be dead

It's not illegal -- it's just shitty. The boss's most capricious whims take priority over the subordinate's crises. Yay, capitalism!

Actually, if OP were to file for FMLA leave, it's illegal for their boss to not give it and to retaliate for it in any way.
mariri9206 32
Which is exactly what OP should do. Get FMLA leave.
joonsson 21
If the leave was approved OP can safely ignore his boss and go unless there is some sort of emergency. His boss might try to fire him for some made up other reason but you can't fire or punish someone for taking their approved leave.

FMLA doesn't apply to small businesses or businesses of a protected class. The protected class is Trump donors and this is another way America is becoming great again.

FMLA was a thing before the stupid Cheeto got elected president and does, in fact, apply to small businesses. It applies to businesses of all kinds, actually.

Report him to HR and take your vacation. If he still decides to take his during your vaction time, then report him again. You deserve to see your father.

Do not ALLOW this to happen to you. Don't let this asshole win. Take it to HR, threaten to quit your job, give him a piece of your mind, do whatever you may have to, but stand your ground. You will never forgive yourself if you don't go with your dad. I know I wouldn't even care about my job at that point. Your boss is a piece of shit. He will just keep doing this kind of crap. He can't just reschedule? What a dick.

It's unfair I think

Your job is never more important that your dad's life. Don't go to work. Be with your father. We only have one life, and it's short, we need to make the right decision in these situations. Which is to screw your job and your asshole boss and go be with your family.

That's a lovely sentiment, but for some people losing their job means homelessness or starvation for them and their family. Not everyone has savings for cases like this. Not everyone can afford it.

And her job may be helping to pay for her dad's care.
