Today, my wife and I received confirmation that she has postpartum depression. When sharing this with the family, my mother exclaimed "I told you she was a psycho!" Now my wife is crying louder and more often than our newborn. Thanks, mom. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I told my mother-in-law that I was going through postpartum depression and was put on a antidepressant to help. Her response was, "Great, now we have a pill head in the family." FML
Today, my mother told me to 'quit having a pity party'. I was just diagnosed with depression. I've lost my boyfriend, my job, my academic standing, and I just got rejected from every graduate school I applied for. And my mother thinks I'm a cry baby. Great. FML
Today, my pregnant wife and I got separated while out shopping. She ended up having meltdown and crying so hard the manager had to call me over the PA. FML
Today, going to my psychiatrist's appointment for my PTSD and depression, my mother yelled about how useless I am and how I torture her existence with my "abnormalities." She told the doctor how much I've improved and become such a delight at home for her and our family. FML
Today, minutes before I walked down the aisle at my wedding, my drunk mother stumbled up to me and told me she was depressed and wanted to leave. FML
Today, my mom came home heavily drunk. As I was taking care of her, she told me all about how I was a mistake. That didn't hurt nearly as much as when she told me she wishes I'd died during her pregnancy. FML
Today, my wife caught me crying over her miscarriage and she started yelling and screaming at me to "man up" because she should be the sad one, not me. FML
Today, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and confided in my mom, after being told I would have trouble having kids. Five minutes later, I hear the whole family laughing about it downstairs. FML
Today, my mom got pissed off at my doctor and called him a quack. She did this because he reassured her that I don't show any signs of the mental retardation that she's convinced herself I must have. FML
Today, my mom found out that I've been having counselling behind her back for the past 4 years. I broke down in tears explaining everything. Her response was, "So you go and bitch about me behind my back?!" And she wonders why I'm depressed. FML

Your mother clearly needs to get over herself and accept your marriage. Your wife may be a "psycho" to her, but she's the "immature brat" to everyone else. Love and support your wife, and reassure her that she's definitely not what your mother says. Also, when you have the time, take your mother aside and set up some boundaries. If she can't accept them, stop coming around. For the sake of visiting your newborn, she'll probably learn to keep her mouth shut. Your mother may be blood, but your wife is your family.

Why in the hell would you share something like that with your family? You will learn (as you seem to be doing) the HARD WAY. Never share details of your marriage with your family. It will always come back to bite you in the ass.

there is a good percentage of women who suffer postpartum at some point during or after pregnancy. get your mom and wife a pamphlet on that and let them both know its not that uncommon a thing. maybe your wife will feel better about herself and your mother can get some education on the subject.

While your mother's response was inappropriate, I don't understand why you would share this information with her in the first place. The mental status of your marital partner is nobody's business, and that includes "close" family members if they're not going to be supportive, something you obviously knew your mother would not be given that she's obviously voiced negative opinions of your wife in the past.

I'm not new to FML, and I totally missed the incest joke. It's not funny, and perdix IS extremely sexist. I've seen various comments they've left on FMLs, too bad I didn't flag them or I would write them here.

Funny is a matter of opinion. Given that a good percentage of FML folk seem to like Perdix's sense of humour, maybe you should just accept the majority rule and move on. Also, I could be wrong, but I always thought Perdix was female...
