Today, my wife and I received confirmation that she has postpartum depression. When sharing this with the family, my mother exclaimed "I told you she was a psycho!" Now my wife is crying louder and more often than our newborn. Thanks, mom. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Thanks for the support
Today, I told my mother-in-law that I was going through postpartum depression and was put on a antidepressant to help. Her response was, "Great, now we have a pill head in the family." FML
Today, my mother told me to 'quit having a pity party'. I was just diagnosed with depression. I've lost my boyfriend, my job, my academic standing, and I just got rejected from every graduate school I applied for. And my mother thinks I'm a cry baby. Great. FML
Hello from the other side
Today, my pregnant wife and I got separated while out shopping. She ended up having meltdown and crying so hard the manager had to call me over the PA. FML
Today, going to my psychiatrist's appointment for my PTSD and depression, my mother yelled about how useless I am and how I torture her existence with my "abnormalities." She told the doctor how much I've improved and become such a delight at home for her and our family. FML
Today, minutes before I walked down the aisle at my wedding, my drunk mother stumbled up to me and told me she was depressed and wanted to leave. FML
Today, my mom came home heavily drunk. As I was taking care of her, she told me all about how I was a mistake. That didn't hurt nearly as much as when she told me she wishes I'd died during her pregnancy. FML
No time for tears
Today, my wife caught me crying over her miscarriage and she started yelling and screaming at me to "man up" because she should be the sad one, not me. FML
Support system
Today, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and confided in my mom, after being told I would have trouble having kids. Five minutes later, I hear the whole family laughing about it downstairs. FML
Today, my mom got pissed off at my doctor and called him a quack. She did this because he reassured her that I don't show any signs of the mental retardation that she's convinced herself I must have. FML
Today, my mom found out that I've been having counselling behind her back for the past 4 years. I broke down in tears explaining everything. Her response was, "So you go and bitch about me behind my back?!" And she wonders why I'm depressed. FML

Your mother clearly needs to get over herself and accept your marriage. Your wife may be a "psycho" to her, but she's the "immature brat" to everyone else. Love and support your wife, and reassure her that she's definitely not what your mother says. Also, when you have the time, take your mother aside and set up some boundaries. If she can't accept them, stop coming around. For the sake of visiting your newborn, she'll probably learn to keep her mouth shut. Your mother may be blood, but your wife is your family.

That is horrible! Post partum depression and post partum psychosis are two very different things. I had post partum depression after my daughter was born...and I'm not psycho lol sorry man.

Do you really know that you're not psycho? Isn't it just the voices in your head telling you that?

Hate to say it, but if you didn't nip your mom treating your wife this way in the bud on the upfront, you kind of deserve it. You're not much of a husband if you can't stand up to mommy on her behalf.

This. My boyfriend hardly ever defends me to his mom, though in his defense (see how nice I am?) his mom usually attacks me when he leaves the room so he's never there for it. BUT I tell him about it afterward and he defends her instead or tries to talk me into thinking it's OK for her to do that. No, it's not - she's not my mom, I'm dating him, NOT her. If this continues, one of these days, he's going to be telling his friends that his girlfriend left because of his mom. It's not avoidable since mother-in-laws will always be bitchy, but you need to tell mommy where her place is, and that is OUTside the relationship, with her mouth shut.
