Today, my mom found out that I've been having counselling behind her back for the past 4 years. I broke down in tears explaining everything. Her response was, "So you go and bitch about me behind my back?!" And she wonders why I'm depressed. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Compassion
Today, I found out the reason my mom took over 9 months to get me a therapist and much needed help after I told her how I had been depressed and suicidal for over two months. It wasn't because it was hard to find one, but actually because she thought I was making it up to cushion the fact that I got a C in a class. FML
Stay mad
Today, my mother is upset that I won’t share things with her anymore. This is the woman who spent my entire childhood gossiping about every teeny tiny detail of my life, and used my suicide attempt as a way to garner pity for herself. Yeah, no thanks. FML
Let it out
Today, I finally convinced my mum to take me to a psychologist. As soon as he sat me down and asked me how I was doing, my mum burst into tears and went on a rant about how her life is terrible and she regrets everything. I was asked to sit in the waiting room. She used up my whole hour. FML
Thanks for being so compassionate
Today, and for the past year, I've been struggling with depression because of family life. I've been talking to my mom for the past weeks, telling her things that happen when she isn't home as a way to build trust. I finally told her I have depression and have had had it for a long time. She laughed. FML
Get away from me
Today, my mother snapped and took her frustrations out on me. Whenever she has a problem with other family members, it falls on me because she can't show them her true face to them. And she wonders why I hide away all the time… FML
Main character syndrome
Today, my mom found out I’m in therapy and took it as an insult, like therapy was a criticism of her parenting. Um, maybe if she hadn’t spent my childhood telling me and everyone in our family that having me was an accident, that I’ve been a huge burden, and that she should have aborted me. FML
Support system error
Today, I was invited to a counseling group for people with emotional problems. I brought the permission slip home for my mom to sign, only for her to accuse me of being a hypochondriacal, lazy, selfish bitch. And my friends wonder why I have problems. FML
What did she do now?
Today, I found out that my husband, who I've just separated from, and my mother, who I don't speak to because she's crazy, have been bitching about me behind my back. FML
Today, my mother told me to 'quit having a pity party'. I was just diagnosed with depression. I've lost my boyfriend, my job, my academic standing, and I just got rejected from every graduate school I applied for. And my mother thinks I'm a cry baby. Great. FML
Thoughts and prayers
Today, my mom sent me to a counselor she knew "through the church" so that I could get some stressors off my chest. Worst idea ever. This "counselor" invalidated everything I had to say and basically told me to pray the issues away, all while completely ignoring me. FML

That's so horrible. Your mom needs to realise that you need to get yourself better so that you are able to deal with her bull.

But obviously some parents are complete garbage and only care about themselves.

OP ignore your mother and anyone else who is negative toward mental progression. I had several counselors and a psychologist because of my mother. it hurts their feelings but you have to get better because if you dont your entire life will be an exhausting never ending hole of depression.

Less work on the muscles, bruh, and more work on your brain, bruh.

You probably should've been open with her on that one at first, OP. Makes it a lot easier.

Some people have the tendency to make everything about themselves. OP's mom is a prime example.
the_zero_article 15
Also there's the chance that OP is in counseling because her mom is verbally abusive, in which case she did the right thing
DemosthenesMB 13
In addition to that, a lot of patients are hesitant about going to counseling at all because they are nervous. OP might not have told his/her mom about it because s/he may have wanted as few people to know about it as possible and/or was afraid that the mother would ask questions about the sessions.

Also, one's healthcare decisions (whether mental or physical health) are personal, private matters and OP doesn't owe an explanation to anyone about her decision to go to therapy.

If shes living in her mother's house, she should. If not, well do what you please.

#4 Actually, OP's therapy is none of her business.
mikbrooke 25
#54 even if they are living in their parents house, the OP does not have to tell anyone they are going to counselling. considering the mothers reaction, how beneficial do you really think that would have been?

You obviously just don't understand. So don't comment.

Depression usually isn't about how hard your life is.. It's about not liking, or being able to figure yourself out... Hang in there OP.. Be individual... Your OWN person.. And never let anyone change that.. And never let anyone tell you who you are..
Rallred32 20
Why...do you talk like this...it's very annoying....

Oh wait. This is the internet. Shit

Depression is all about being unhappy with yourself and or your life. I really hope you're just being sarcastic and aren't really that dense.
PassiveAggresive 12
You're highly mistaken. also, there is a difference in being depressed and having clinical depression. Being depressed is most likely caused by not enjoying or being happy with your life or surroundings, and not being able to make things positive even though they aren't.. like you were able to before. Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain which creates issues with self esteem, confidence, thinking clearly, etc.

I have depression and PTSD related anxiety as a result of years of verbal abuse and neglect at the hands of my father. Three years ago I managed to stop the abuse and my mom, brothers and I have been much better off ever since. I'm surrounded by people who love me and support me and even though there are still remnants of the past abuse that occasionally surface, my life has been amazing. But I still suffer depression and panic attacks. This isn't something I can control. I hate to share my story here on the internet where I know I'll get torn to shreds soon, but I think it's really insensitive that people think that I and others suffering from depression feel this way solely because we hate our lives or ourselves. It's much more complicated than that and everyone's story is different. So unless you've personally suffered from clinical depression don't think you can claim you know what it's like or why it happens.

Sounds like she could use some therapy herself

"You know what?! I think YOU need some therapy!" *bitch slaps mother to the ground followed by excessive tea bagging and evil laughter

Aww OP I'm so sorry! I really hope you can overcome this. I've had a lot if trouble with depression and I know how hard it is when no one understands. Stay strong!
kelsorg 21
sounds pretty selfish on her behalf. you didn't do anything wrong by trying to help yourself and have someone to talk to. fyl op, hope things perk up for you soon.
JaffaMC 13
Don't let this be a reason to go further into depression OP, keep taking the therapy it'll get better :)

Hey, I'm glad you were able to seek help by yourself :) that's a hard step, as for your mom hopefully she'll come to understand the impact her negativity has on you
