Today, my best friend since first grade, who I've been in love with for years and finally hooked up with last week, asked me for advice. He wanted to know if he should start a long distance relationship with a girl he hooked up with last night. FML

Today, after my long distance "boyfriend" told me he loved me more than the world, he asked for advice on how to talk to girls. He already has a girl from class in mind. What's worse is that I actually haven't broken up with him yet because I know about his home life. I can't help but feel like I wasted my time. FML
Today, my best friend, with whom I have been in love for years, kissed me, hugged me, held my hand, hooked up with me and told me that he loved me more than anything and wanted to be with me... until he sobered up and his girlfriend got back to town. FML
Today, a guy I've liked for a while asked if he could talk to me during break. He'd never done that before, so I was excited and said yes. As soon as we both sat down, he asked if I'd help him get a date with my best friend. FML
Today, my best friend whom I have been in love with for years, called me, proposed, and confessed his love for me. He was at a noisy bar so I asked him to call me back later and we'd discuss it. He called back later, hungover, with no recollection of our conversation whatsoever. FML
Today, a guy who I was low-key crushing on asked me out. I excitedly told my best friend, as I do when I have big news. She informed me that the same guy asked her out 15 minutes ago. He'd originally been into her and only came to me because she rejected him. FML
Today, I found out the guy I’m in love with has been side-messaging one of my closest friends about hooking up for sex. This isn’t the first guy this has happened with. FML
Today, my best friend, the man who I've been in love with for nine years, finally told me he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. Unfortunately, it was while he was using me to practice proposing to his girlfriend. FML
Today, I confessed my feelings to the only man I've ever loved. He asked me for dating advice. FML
Today, I asked out this girl at work who I've had a crush on for a while. She looked oddly familiar, aside from the fact that we worked together. It was almost like we'd met outside of work. Two hours and one Snapchat story later, I realized I'd asked out my best friend's girlfriend. FML
Today, I had to help my best friend plan his upcoming date with the girl he doesn't know I'm secretly in love with. FML

I don't know why people say they're in love with someone they haven't been with. Infatuation or lust maybe? Anyways OP, hooking up with him probably wasn't the best idea if you wanted a long term relationship. Maybe talking to him about how you feel would have been better. Since you're his friend, support him, he trusts you.

While ultimately it is the individual's responsibility to keep their own limits in mind, if the best friend had known OP really was in love with him and casually slept with her anyway, that would be pretty dickish. However I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. It should really be established before sex what the sex means, but spur of the moment does happen, and in those cases, you really need to follow up and talk about what it means, particularly if you have a close relationship with the person. If there is no follow up, you should assume, to be on the safe side for your feelings, that it was nothing more than some casual fun for the both of you. I never used to be constant about following this advice, and since all my hook ups have been casual, and for awhile it worked well. I even hooked up with a friend and there was no weirdness. However one guy(who aside from a few messages and a casual date before hand I didn't really know) got attached, and thought it meant more. I felt pretty bad, because I have had people mess with my feelings before, and I know it's no fun. TL,DR for your sake and theirs, TALK when you hook up. And if you don't talk, assume the most casual of meanings.

You should not hold onto someone who might never have the same feelings that you do, or mistake having sexual intercourse for an emotional reciprocation. In addition, while this person and you are close it is quite tactless to request your opinion about someone else, especially given the history. The hardest, and best decision you can make is to allow this person to leave your life, otherwise you will ache each time you are asked for relationship advice.
