Today, my 2-year-old daughter started showing signs of understanding the potty training concept. She announced to my mother-in-law that she needed to go potty, only to be flatly told, "No, you don't." So she crapped herself. Now it's going to take forever to train her. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Potty drama
Today, my two year-old is being potty trained. He got the gist of it and actually did #1 and #2 in the potty and after our little celebratory dance, I went to get him a cookie (which took me two seconds). I come back to see him covered in shit and pee because he tried to go empty the potty himself. FML
Today, in an attempt to potty train my 2-year-old, I sat her on the toilet and waited for several minutes. I finally gave up and lifted her off the toilet just in time for her to pee on my new shoes. FML
Show, don't tell
Today, I was desperate to teach my 2-year old to use her potty. I had to pee, and thought maybe she would learn by watching me use it. Everything was going well, until I realized that I had a long pee. So long that it overfilled her potty all over. FML
Well done sweetie
Today, my daughter watched a potty training video on Sesame Street. In the middle of the video, she got up and ran to her potty to practice. She then announced, "All done!", and proudly closed the lid to her potty. She then immediately stood on top of it and peed. FML
Toilet training
Today, I came down with food poisoning of some sort. After hours of scrambling to the toilet to vomit and empty my bowels, my three-year-old daughter got fed up and is now trying to potty-train me. FML
A little treat
Today, the 4 year-old I was babysitting came up to me all happy, saying she went to the bathroom like a "big girl." Knowing she was just potty trained, I asked if she'd remembered to flush. Looking at me confused, she said, "But it's in my room." FML
Today, while driving home, my 3-year-old daughter told me she had to poop. I told her that she would have to wait until we got home. When we got home, she pulled down her pants and shat on the floor, because, "I'm home now." FML
Today, I woke up to my 2-year-old daughter hitting me in the face. She had just pooped her nappy and put her hands down her pants to "feel it squish around." FML
Today, was the first day of potty training for my toddler. While watching a "How to Potty Train" video, I noticed my toddler was making a weird face on the side of the couch. I walked over to her, picked her up and a big pile of poop dropped. FML
Today, my 2-year-old son figured out that if he takes his pull-up off and DOESN'T go on the potty, he can pee all over things. FML

That was incredibly rude of your mother-in-law. She should be supporting and helping you in your potty training adventures! Kids need constant reenforcement in order to understand. Best of luck OP.

This might help, kids at that age don't want to have dirty papers/underwear. Especially if she knows what the potty is.

It's almost like OP's mother- in-law was trying to sabotage her efforts on purpose.

To those saying that the scare tactics are wrong. guess what? My parents used fear as motivation when I was a child, and I don't have any behavioral problems or irrational fears. Do you know why? That's what happens when you grow up.

Sit your daughter down and tell her she did a good job by telling someone when she needed to go potty and that what her grandma did was wrong. At 2 she should be able to understand if you just explain.

That just reminds me of the time my dad an I were left in charge of his friend's 2-year-old. Except she came up to us after using the potty and proudly announced it to us, then led us to said potty... where we saw the bowl had not been replaced and she'd crapped straight on the carpet.

Also, just throwing it out there: when my parents were potty training my brother, they just had him walk around the house without a diaper on. Then, when he voided, instead of just going in his diaper and not thinking about it, he would immediately see the result. Apparently it was quite effective. The only reason they didn't do the same thing with me is because the house he was in had linoleum, but by the time I came along they'd moved to a place with carpets.

That's the normal way to teach them. Put them in regular underwear so they learn they can't just go in their pants anymore

They didn't even put underwear on him, just let him wander around half-naked.

#39 Living in perpetual stress because you're going to be punished for something you can't always control is kind of bad for a child. It would even be bad for a fully grown adult anyway. How will you fix it if you actually have a kid who's got a problem ? With that tactic you're going to find it out the hard way. When your kid is 15 and still unable to stay alone, afraid of the dark, or irrationally scared by everything. My father did that because "a good scare is not bad" now my 17 years old brother panicks when my mother is 10 minutes late. Because he was 3 years old and my father told him "mom isn't going to come back home if you don't do this or that". Because between 2 and 4 years old is a very important part of a child's brain development, that's the best time to teach them because the thing a kid learns during that time stays in their mind forever, that's also the age where phobias can be creates by traumatic experiences. Resulting in a grown 17 years old guy in constant fear a family member will disappear. How's that for a good and harmless tactic ?

Wow, that was rude of her. I would have let her clean up, too. I hope your daughter learns soon, OP!
