Today, my 11-year-old son and I took an IQ test for a laugh. To be honest, I've often suspected that I may have some form of mental retardation, but I didn't expect to get a score of 79, while he got one of 114. FML

Today, I took a legitimate IQ test and got a score of 80. My parents both have IQ scores above Einstein’s. FML
Today, I took an online IQ test, even though I knew they give everyone unrealistically high scores. My score was 73. FML
Today, we got the IQ test results back, which show our daughter is on the high end of the genius scale. This confirms what my wife and I have long feared: our 6-year-old is FAR smarter than we are. No wonder she wins all the arguments we have. FML
Today, my husband, who is proud of his 155 IQ, is depressed our son is becoming a typical football jock with an IQ only just into the triple digits. He even thinks I must have had an affair, because no way could someone as smart as him have produced such a blockhead with tattoos. FML
Today, my dad took my son out of his will, so I confronted him. Turns out he has a new policy of “not rewarding dumb behaviour.” He’s willing to put him back in the will, if he ever scores over 120 on an IQ test. I love my son, but he’s a happy goldfish, 120 is just never happening. FML
Today, to settle a bet with a friend, I took an online IQ test twice. The first time, I chose answers at random without reading the questions. The second time, I took it for real. I got a higher score from the random selections than from my serious attempt. FML
Today, my son is smarter than average, almost genius level, and he has now reached an age where not only does he question me at every turn, he actually out-argues me 90% of the time and I can’t do anything about it because technically he’s right and I’m wrong. FML
Today, my 50-year-old dad was in a foul mood after taking an online test that put him in Slytherin house instead of Ravenclaw where he "belongs" because he's "so smart". FML
Today, my mom was taking an online IQ test. To the question "On which continent is Canada located?" she responded "Antarctica." If intelligence is genetic, I'm screwed. FML
Today, I asked my father if it was okay for me to take an ADHD test. He spent about 30 minutes yelling at as to why that is a dumb idea. I have asked multiple people who know me better than anyone else and they believe that I might have ADHD. FML

#26, IQ tests basically measure the processing power of your brain. Smarter people have more RAM, so to speak. I feels sorry for OP. I was tested professionally a few years back and got a 143.

IQ tests are notorious for simplifying things. Intelligence has many facets and this society is only partially good at measuring some of them. Some of the tests are a joke.

IQ tests, even professional ones, are a measure of one type of intelligence. Scores over around 120-130 (on the ones averaging 100) don't give you much benefit career wise. If it was an Internet one, it's not worth thinking of. OP if you're where you want to be in life, it doesn't matter. If you're not, look at education to get there, you may need testing for dyslexia among other things. The score still doesn't matter. It's a number on one test.

120 is the highest in the "normal" area of IQ. Also, since IQ tends to be hereditary with children roughly in the average of their parents', the test is bullshit, your wife score must be quite high, or your child is not your child.

96-117 is average intelligence, anything under 80 is considered mentally retarded. 119-128 is above average, and 129+ is considered genius.

100 is average intelligence. 114/115 is the start of high average leaning towards being gifted at 130, thus, OP's son is near-gifted.

IQ tests are designed to compare you to other people your own age. So OP is not as smart as other people at his or her age while his son is smart for a 11 year old.

No. He said he always thought he was partially retarded, not his son. Besides the fact that IQ tests are highly subjective. He (the dad) scored just below the low end of normal, and his son scored just towards the upper end of normal.

It depends on the questions you probably got an adult one and he got one for a kid his age...that's how they are set up I got a high score a middle school one in high school while having a really low score for a college one

IQ goes by age and developmental stage. If you get an IQ of 100, you are average for your age group, and right where you should be.

Besides all else, IQ is averaged across the population, so the numbers are meaningless unless everyone in the world takes them, of course there's many countries where children don't even get schools to go to, so that's not going to happen anyone soon. But also means the ability needed to get average would lower, not loads and loads just get really low scores. And nothing worse than a teenager who thinks they're smart trying to claim that most others are stupid.

Online IQ tests are ridiculous. Actually, even written ones aren't great. One administered by a psychologist is the best, but to be honest, if you grew up with puzzles and logic games, you do better, regardless of actual intelligence. Mine came in above 160, so my skepticism about these tests isn't because I did poorly.
