Today, I went to the surprise birthday party of an ex I still love, though I'm the one who ended things. I walked in in time to see her screaming "Yes" to her kneeling boyfriend, her parents crying and applauding, and her brothers patting him on the back. FML

Sorry to hear that, but if you really loved her you wouldn't have let her go

You knew you would be asking for pain when you decided to go.

Did anyone think it was the girls actions caused the OP to end things? She could have been cheating on him with the guy who was purposing. You can still be in love with someone and know it won't work out.

60, I don't know many people that would still be on friendly terms with their ex's after being cheated on. But you're correct, she could have done something to drive him over the edge and he broke up with her as a result of it. 62, the ex-girlfriend moved on so. . . In time, he will have no choice but to move on also. (:

Why'd you break things off in the first place?!

Can't have it both ways..

YOU DUMPED HER! GET OVER IT!

People are saying "YDI" because he dumped his ex when he still loved her, but maybe she did something inexcusable, like cheating on him or abusing him, and he did the smart thing and dumped her even though he still loved her. Don't know why he would go to her party after something like that, but we don't know the situation. Maybe they have a lot of mutual friends or something. Anyway, I'm guessing if he broke up with her, he's not necessarily upset that she's moved on and is getting married, but I imagine if he still loved her that would be a painful moment to witness.

Not that I'm saying this is always the right way to do things, but there are couples who decide to work things out after one cheats. If he loved her that much, he could've looked into couples counseling so they could move past it. But it if it's abuse, OP needs to remind himself he dodged a bullet and put some serious distance between him and his ex, mutual friends or not. It's over either way.

Hindsight is 20/20, as the saying goes.

Looks like she's the one who lucked out.

If you love her you'll be happy enough to let her go.

sucks

Dude, whether you broke up with her for good or bad reasons, I don't understand why you'd go to her b-day party, especially if she has a new boyfriend. If they just got engaged, they must have been together for a while so why doing this to yourself?
