Today, I watered a dying communal plant. I was fined $250 for littering. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Hell in a handbasket
Today, I tried to help my community by cleaning up a patch of waste ground covered in litter. Instead of gratitude, I was reported to the cops and issued with fines for noise complaints, trespassing, causing a nuisance, littering, harming wildlife, and about 15 other offences. Screw this community. FML
Today, I was walking through town when I saw a plastic bag on the ground. Trying to be a good citizen, I picked it up, intending on throwing it in the trash. When I looked up, there wasn't a trash can for another hundred feet. So I put it back down. Now I've got a $200 fine to pay for littering. FML
Thanks for your support
Today, I visited my dad's grave to give it a clean, since moss and shit were starting to grow on the gravestone. Apparently this counts as vandalism, according to the groundskeeper, because soap and water can damage the stone and make it crumble faster. Yes, the city cops sent me a fine. FML
Today, at my job of two months, I'd taken it upon myself to water the plants around the office every day since they all looked a little sad. My boss then asked why so many of the fake plants were getting mouldy. My co-workers had watched me water plastic plants for two months and nobody bothered to tell me. FML
Thanks Deborah
Today, I left outside a bowl of fine herbs I had painstakingly grown from seeds, so they could get some sun. What did they get instead? My upstairs neighbor's filthy soapy water from washing her balcony. Three quarters of the seedlings are now dead. FML
Today, I tried to save a dying bird I found on the sidewalk. I got a parking ticket for $114 in front of the animal hospital. I later found out the bird died. FML
Today, in a desperate attempt to get my business "out there", I dropped a few of my cards on a station floor. I got a call, even a quote. A $500 fine from the transit for public littering. FML
Green fingers
Today, it's been a week since I bought a "self-watering" plant to make my life easier. Turns out the self-watering feature means the plant waters itself by leaking all over the floor when it's overfilled. Now my apartment is a mini wetland, and my carpet is fucked. FML
Today, I came home to a lease violation and a $220 fine after a routine pest control visit. The violation: my single beta fish in a small bowl. FML
Green fingers
Today, the plant I bought for my apartment a few weeks ago started looking worse. I'd followed the care instructions carefully, so I asked my neighbor for advice. She pointed out that the plastic pot was still inside the decorative pot, so the water had nowhere to drain. FML

Were you watering it with little bits of garbage or something?

Should rainclouds be fined for littering as well?

This is California after all. No wonder they haven't gotten any rain in years, it's trying to save the money to pay fines.

Technically, if you collect rainwater, you can be fined for it, depending on the state you live in...

Idiocracy never gets old. It is the inevitable...

Well, considering there is such a thing as a "rain tax," hardly anything surprises me anymore. It's likely that someone is trying to meet a quota, and you are the victim. Hopefully, you're rewarded in a different manner later.

@5 Rain tax is for pollution in stormwater drainage, not for actual rain.
TheNewGuy03 29
16, I'm aware of that. I know they don't tax the rainfall itself, but my point is that it is a ridiculous tax to have, regardless...

Can... can they even do that?

I'm not surprised. California's going through a severe drought right now and they're doing a lot like this to conserve as much water.

I would contest the fine.
Sariasprincy 7
Probably deserved it. They're wondering why you're wasting water since California is in a drought.
soulreaper12296 28
Then OP would've been fined for wasting water, not littering.

Well, the thing is, the argument could be made that the fine for littering is both larger and harder to disprove, thus why that fine was issued, in order to legitimize itself. But on the other hand I live in LA, and have seen cops give tickets for some pretty bogus things, but never that bad, I have a feeling that's not the whole story

This is the result of quotas and unnecessary pressure from clueless supervisors. Makes me question how "free" we really are.
Krypt1c 11
We're not. Everything we are "Free" to do is monitored in some way
