Today, I came home to a lease violation and a $220 fine after a routine pest control visit. The violation: my single beta fish in a small bowl. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I came home to an eviction notice after an apartment inspection. The reason? Having an unauthorized pet that could cause unnecessary damage to my suite. My pet is a goldfish. FML
Today, I watered a dying communal plant. I was fined $250 for littering. FML
Today, I heard a loud crashing noise. I ran into the kitchen to see what it was. My cat had knocked over my fish bowl and had my Beta in her mouth. After scolding her and rescuing it, I decided to clean its bowl. When I went to dump some of the water in the sink, my fish went down the drain. FML
Today, it was confirmed that the "no pet rule" in my apartment complex is so strict that I'm not even allowed to have sea monkeys. FML
Today, I bought a new Siamese Fighting Fish. I was so happy with my new fish so I bought him an expensive lovely bowl, some weeds, and a toy for the bowl. I left the room to get the fish food. When I returned, the fish was gone, and the cat was sitting on the table. FML
Today, I received a $500 fine for an "unruly" dog. I don't have a dog. FML
Today, I came home to my boyfriend emptying his bowels into my aquarium. FML
Today, I bought a new goldfish. While leaving my fish on my balcony to go get fish food, I hear a loud squawk and splash, I race outside to see a bird flying off with my fish. FML
Fined
Today, my apartment complex added $250 to the $1,000 my roomate and I already owe because of an unauthorized pet and complaints from neighbors that our dog barks all night long. We don't have a dog, we don't even have a pet. FML
Cool cool cool
Today, after living in my new apartment for barely three weeks, I found mice living under my dishwasher. When I brought it up to the managers, they said I'd have to pay for an exterminator myself since they weren't there when they cleaned. FML

If the lease says no pets then you totally deserve it.

No pets policy, perhaps?

some places are just way too picky...

kinda sucks that it was just for a fish but you really should have checked first.

just take your beta fish to your landlord and yell him/ her you were going to make fresh sushi and proceed to take out the fish and wrap it to a ball of rice with nori and ask your landlord to try it :D WARNING side effects are diarrhea, constipation , pooping of guppies and sea sickness.

Really? For a fish. The beer you drink is much more likely to do damage to the apt than a fish, which is the point of a no pet rule. FYL for irrational rubes.

OP deserved it. It's a stupid rule but if you are going to break the stupid rule, either hide it, or find out whether or not the landlord is super picky about those rules. If its an unreasonable landlord, it might be time to find a new place.

If the lease did not say no pets, then **** you life. Decisions, decisions... ;)

I do know a lot of places say no pets on paper but allow fish since they don't do any damage... Seems like an innocent enough mistake to me

You really should follow the policies, but it sucks anyway that you have to pay a fine. FYL :l

omg guys let's get real here. a fish can't make noise, doesn't swim or eat loud, it's in a bowl, and it's harmless that make great room pets! if they got a violation for a fish that means someone went into your house at hunted that fish down!!

A modern rendition of Moby-Dick?
Mirorbo 27
There she flares!!! Oh wait...it's only male Bettas that do that.

fish don't swim??? all the lies I have been told; all the teachers I dreamt of sleeping with in no relation whatsoever to the topic...
IndridWarm 23
They don't swim *loud*. Unless maybe they're sharks.

the theoretical idea for not allowing fish in the apt is that fish are generally kept in large amounts of water, if anything happens that the water somehow spills in large quantity, that can cause serious damage to the aparment. Also bettas are generally kept in standing water, so there could be a concern for algae, mould, bugs, or the landlord's just a dick....

umm number 5??? fish do swim....
penguinonastairc 0
Umm, number 60??!????one!?!?!@eleven?!?111?!1?1!!1?1?! Fish don't swim loudly.

oh, trust me, females flare too, its just that males have flashier fins, so they are more noticeable.
Mirorbo 27
Huh...I always thought that fish were perfectly fine when it comes to the 'no pets' thing. As it was already pointed out, they do absolutely nothing to cause a disturbance. Sounds like someone's landlord is just being a big meanie.

... or wants OP out.

Sounds like someones landlord has a stick up his/her ass.

I think it's because beta's fight each other and their worried their uhh...fish fighting.
Mirorbo 27
Most darlings are smart enough to keep only one fish in their tank so they don't kill each other. Also, the OP has stated that they only have one fishy!~

oh, yeah I caught that too. using the wrong their haha. happens to the best of us

It depends on what state you live in on whether a fish is a lease violation. I know here they don't include fish as a pet in the no pet policies but if you have an aquarium they can ask for more of a deposit in case of water damage but don't if you own a goldfish or beta tank.Just ask beforehand.

I didn't realise states intervened with leases to that extent. I would've assumed it's up to the landlord. If you signed the lease, OP, you should've read it. Keep Bubbles hidden since you know your landlord is a wanker who will work you fir every penny he can get.

For* BIATCH l the grammar nazi l
ImaginaryFoe 1
It's clearly a typo and not a grammar issue unlike the word "biatch". No one with intelligence would assume I inserted an evergreen into my sentence but thanks all the same.

That's what you get for getting a fish in the beta. So many bugs. (Nerd joke btw...)

What's up with the "Today, I violated a rule, and got a fine. FML."-fml's? Sure, it was a small violation, but read everything you sign, and ask if you have any additional questions - and if you assume you'll be fine because it's just a small breach, I'd say say you didn't do anything morally outrageous, but you should be prepared that you're running the risk of getting a fine.
