Today, I took my girlfriend of nearly 2 years out to dinner so I could propose. When the waiter brought the check, I caused a bit of a scene to get everyone's attention. When I got on my knee and proposed, she said no and asked if I could hurry up and pay, because she was embarrassed. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I gathered both mine and my girlfriend's families secretly to a restaurant. I paid the restaurant to play romantic music, and paid for the best table available. As soon as we finished our meal, our families gathered around and I proposed. She laughed and said no way. FML
Bad idea
Today, I took my girlfriend to a very nice restaurant. I thought it would be a good place to pop the question. I gave the ring to the waiter and asked him to put it on her dessert plate. When she saw it, she picked it up, put it down, and said "No". Then she started to eat her dessert. FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend in front of about 75 people in the fanciest restaurant in town. She told me she was already engaged, while holding up her right hand. FML
A night to remember
Today, I planned to propose to my girlfriend in front of her family at dinner. I had the ring ready and got down on one knee. She immediately burst into laughter and said, "Are you kidding?" The family stared in silence, and I quickly realised she was just teasing me... until I stood up and knocked over an entire table of drinks. FML
Jumping the gun
Today, my boyfriend took me on a surprise date to an expensive restaurant. After the meal, he got down on his knee and proposed. We've only been dating for two weeks, so I said no. He just silently kept staring me in the eyes, no matter what I said or did. I ended up having to walk home. FML
Today, at a restaurant, I happily watched as my boyfriend of three years got down on his knees and proposed to me. Before I could say yes and hug him, a girl flung herself at him, kissed him and shouted, "Yes!" With us still highly confused, she then ran away. FML
Please don't do this
Today, I took my girlfriend of five and a half years to family dinner at a restaurant. After we all had finished dessert, I got down on one knee, pulled out my great grandmother's ring and proposed. The entire restaurant was dead silent. She looked around and then slowly walked out. FML
Today, I was going to propose to my girlfriend of 3 years. I got reservations for a romantic dinner, and at the end, fireworks would spell out my proposal. The whole thing had taken weeks to plan out and had cost me a lot of money. She proposed to me at a subway station first. FML
The proposal
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend of two years after eating in a 5-star restaurant. She said that she wasn't ready, and that she would walk home by herself, which she did. A homeless gentleman walked up from behind me, patted me on the back, and said, "Bitches, man." I cried. FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend in public. She happily said yes, and the surrounding crowd cheered for us. About 10 minutes later, after the excitement died down, she leaned over and quietly said, "Actually, I don't want to marry you. I only said yes so I wouldn't disappoint the crowd." FML

Why make a scene? Were you assuming she would say yes just because everyone was looking at her? I'd be embarrassed too, because that's just asking for trouble in my opinion and if she says no(which she did) then people make her out to be cruel and heartless.

In my humble opinion, no proposal should ever be rejected because everyone who proposes should be DAMNED SURE the answer will be "yes". If you aren't absolutely positive, don't do it.

I believe some communication is in order because it seems that you two are not on the same page...

I totally agree. He should have threw hints at her. Like, "how do you feel about getting married" or "where do you see this relationship going." Proposal should never be a total surprise.

#14, I agree. The proposal should just be a formality. You should have been talking for months about what your married life will be like, discussing things like kids, etc. If it's not a sure thing, you are really setting yourself up for humiliation.

This is especially true if the proposal is public. Why would he deliberately get everyone's attention if he knew there was a chance she might say no? It almost seems like he arranged it so she would feel pressured to say yes.

Public proposals are always a bad idea unless marriage has been previously discussed with both parties agreeing.

Im sorry, thats really embarrassing. But public proposals, especially ones where you cause a scene arent a good idea.

I don't understand why you wouldn't talk about this in advance. I'm all for the proposal being a surprise, but you shouldn't spring something like this on your SO without having talked to them about it and making sure it's what they want too. Oh, and YDI for having the most unoriginal proposal ever.

Maybe they had. They might have talked about their future together and kids, and he thought that meant soon and she meant later.

I'm so sorry to hear that OP :/ Guess she wasn't ready...

You should have said "I'm so sorry, I'm so so sorry"

My thought is if you didn't know she would get embarrassed by a public proposal, or didn't care, you probably shouldn't have been proposing. The level at which you know each other, not the time you're together, is the better indicator of marriage readiness.

Being proposed to in public is my worst nightmare. I hate the idea of complete strangers sharing my special moment.

Public proposals (assuming it's not an office or public party where you're acquainted with everyone) are both rude to fellow patrons/citizens and prone to disaster. You were asking for trouble.

I agree. I hate when I am trying to have a nice night out and people assume their lives (marriages, arguments, children) are more important than any one else. I do not mind if someone proposes, but don't make a big scene in public and expect all of us to just join in. I might sound like a complete bitch, but I really don't care if two strangers get married.

Me too. A lot of places such as restaurants no longer have the staff sing "Happy Birthday" because it's disrupts the people around them that are enjoying their night out too. I'm glad of that.

Agree! I was getting off a flight other night and some dick decided to propose to a chick on the plane. She was the first one off, he did it as soon as she was the first one thru the door. Blocked everyone else off from exiting until he was done. I was told later by the person who picked me up that he was trying to get all the people waiting to group dance!
