Today, I told my daughter that she won't be going to her homecoming dance as punishment for her terrible grades. She's been crying and singing "If I Die Young" in her room for hours. At this point, I don't know if I need to call a therapist or a vocal coach. FML
Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Got talent?
Today, I told my mom that I want to try out for a singing competition on TV, so I might be able to kick off my musical career. She convinced me to sing a song for her, so I did. Mid-way through, she lost it, burst into laughter, and told me to stay in school. FML
Teenagers, amirite?
Today, my daughter told me she would rather hang herself than hang out with me. All I did was remind her to go to bed at a reasonable time to get some sleep for an activity she likes doing. FML
Today, my neighbours' whiny emo of a daughter got dumped by her boyfriend. In her infinite wisdom, she's chosen to cope by playing on her recorder the worst rendition of "My Heart Will Go On" that I've ever heard. It's been going on all day. Now I know why he dumped this idiot. FML
Judge Judy
Today, my teenage daughter came out into the living room and began belting out a song. When I cleared my throat, she screamed, turned beet red, and said, “I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE!” She’d been hiding all day, and to say I'm judging her would be an understatement. FML
The Voice
Today, I was practicing for a choir concert that I have next week. My mom walked into my room and listened to me for a little while. After I finished the last song, she smiled, patted me on the head and said, "It's okay honey, I can't sing either." FML
Today, I came home and told my mom that I got the lead in the school musical, which I was very happy about. She pulled me into a hug then said, "But you know you can't really sing, right?" FML
Priorities
Today, I was feeling depressed. I overheard my mom crying on the phone. She said, “If my daughter kills herself, who’s going to do the dishes?” FML
Today, my daughter turned Emo. FML
Today, my fiancée told me she was having a bad day while we were lying in bed. Just as she was about to fall asleep I thought it would be sweet if I sang her a song that her Mom sang to her when she was a child. Instead, I was told to shut the fuck up and that I sucked. FML
Love and hate
Today, I got a call from my daughter’s school. They found her on the roof, threatening to kill herself. I had to pretend to sound scared and sad over the phone, but in reality, the only emotion I could feel was extreme joy. FML

What about a tutor instead of both?

She may be giving you a hard time now, but I honestly believe that if you stick it out and teach her that her actions have consequences, she will appreciate it so much more when she is an adult and be better of for it.

You're depriving your daughter of her childhood. If she's singing that she's probably unhappy, maybe wants to "die young". I don't think it's funny to joke about her singing, depression sucks.

For ****'s sake, just let her go. Keeping her from going isn't going to do anything about her grades so save the punishment for after. Homecoming could be her last hooraw before being grounded.

You had every right to punish her. People don't get that the whole point of going to school is to learn something and if your daughter isn't doing her best, she doesn't deserve the perks of high school. I wish my grades were more encouraged in high school. Things would be a lot easier for me now.

Try both.

Homecoming isn't that special. I went to three of them, and it was like every other dance the school held. The only "special" dance is prom, and a lot of schools are letting juniors go to that now as well as seniors. I say it's a fair punishment. Everyone whining "how could you", "it's special", and "she'll hate you forever"... you're all clearly teenagers. I missed several of the dances in high school because my parents didn't let me go to them. Guess what? I don't hate my parents, and I'm not emotionally scarred. The daughter will get over it.

OP already commented saying that the daughter was warned and her bad grades were due to cutting classes. Taking away a Homecoming is more than fair. The daughter will have more dances, but she won't have more chances to bring her grades up unless she wants to keep taking the same classes over and over and never graduate. So, good on you OP. Keep it up.

I'm a teen girl, and I couldn't care less about dances, actually. I've been to one dance so far, sure, it was fun, but I'd rather do a lot of other things then go to a school dance, just saying.

I'm reading all comments saying "your parenting skills are great. Stick to your guns" and all that bull crap bit honestly it is kind of harsh. I would be really really mad if this happened to me. So for you daughter I'm really sorry. Parent YDI
