Today, I met a really nice couple at a bar. We talked and the conversation eventually drifted towards online dating. I casually commented that hooking up through the internet was sad and pathetic. Turns out they met on Myspace. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was at dinner with my boyfriend and his family. We were talking about relationships, and I commented on how online dating was the dumbest thing ever. His mom and step-dad went on to tell me how they had met through an online dating service. FML
Is this catfishing?
Today, I went on a date with someone I've been talking to online for weeks. Unfortunately, it turns out they'd used old photos and misrepresented themselves, and I didn't find them attractive at all. Even I'm not that desperate. We ended up having an awkward dinner and I couldn't wait for it to be over. FML
Today, I went on a date with a guy I met online. It was going OK, until he started asking me if he should stick with the site until he finds the right person. I guess I know how he feels about me, at least. FML
Today, I made a friend on an online chat. We got along fairly well and even traded Facebook accounts. I found out that the two of us had a lot of very surprising things in common. We were the same age, we were from the same school, and we even had the same boyfriend. FML
Today, I declared I was done with online dating after several disasters. My friend set me up with a friend of her husband's. Turns out he's one of the men who rejected me on the website. He laughed when he saw me and said, "Well, this is awkward" and left. FML
Don't cheat
Today, I finally met the guy I've been getting to know online in person for a date. When we saw each other, we both realized that we had heavily Facetuned our profile pictures. The awkward silence that followed was the longest five minutes of my life. FML
Dating pool hell
Today, I tried instant online video dating for the first time, after not having much luck on other dating sites. The first date was kind of awkward, and "ended" with a kind of fade out and I could hear her chatting with someone else. "Hella awkward." Fair enough. "But was he cute? - No." FML
Today, I finally got the chance to meet this wonderful guy I met on a dating site. She was very excited to see me, too. FML
What are the odds?
Today, I re-joined a popular on-line dating service. I'd first signed up 3 years ago and was matched with a wonderful woman. After about a year, she broke up with me. I was devastated. After two years of trying to win her back, I'd decided it's best just to move on. Guess who they matched me with? FML
Fake news
Today, I went to a coffee shop to meet an online date. I couldn't spot him, so he eventually came up and introduced himself. It seems his on-line picture must have been taken before I was born. I spluttered "This isn't going to work," and promptly scuttled out. FML

One out of eight marriages last year were people who met online. I met my boyfriend online and we've been together for over three years and are now engaged. What's your way of meeting people? Going to bars? I think that's a little more sad and pathetic.

In your defense, I used to think the same thing. Then I went on a date with a guy I met online who seemed like he had some potential. He was by far the biggest douche bag I've ever met in my entire life. I think it fails more often than it works out, but it still works for some.

I'm just loving all these judgmental people who are saying internet dating is "pathetic". There is nothing wrong with meeting on the internet. Go live your own lives, instead of judging those of others.

"You deserved this for being so backwards. Welcome to 2009." Yeah, welcome to the era in which online pseudorelationships supersede real, interpersonal relationships. I don't condemn those who use the Internet to keep in contact with those they cannot see on a regular basis, but it seems as if many in this generation use the Internet as a substitute for getting out and interacting with people. The OP shouldn't have jumped the gun and stated her opinion so quickly, but I can't help but wonder why some people sit in their rooms all day on Facebook/Myspace/whatever instead of actually getting out and meeting people.

I remember reading "lots of people join sites because they don't get time to go to bars and clubs to meet," BBC News stated. Sometimes they are just overwhelm with their work. I think when chatting online, you get to know the person's personality without meeting face to face. The language and style a person writes/types can protray what kind of person he/she is unconsciously. I meet two of my amazing friends online, one whom I speak to on the phone to consult problems with on a daily basis. The internet is a nice way to socialize with others without issues of low self-esteem or whatever. Internet dating can work if both people are honest with each other. Just becareful.

Plus don't forget that online dating sites are a chance to surmount physical distance and boundaries between two people who just might be right for each other! The disadvantage of meeting someone who's just withing a 50-mile radius of your home is that it limits the possibilities of meeting others. Also don't forget what #46 said: some people just don't have time to go to that many social events or even bars.

Forget about what all these people say negatively about the topic, seeing as you shouldn't feel bad yourself. That's your personal opinion, so f*** everyone else if they don't agree.

#44. (1) Get a job? I have one, thanks. (2) Be better looking? I'm pretty happy with the way I look, and so is my boyfriend, so **** off. Not like you can tell how I look from here, anyway. (3) Go to a bar? Yeah, cause THAT'S not pathetic. "I think I'll go to a bar and talk to all the drunk people cause I'm not good enough for people to like when they're sober." My boyfriend and I met online, but we were just good friends and didn't agree to be in a relationship until we met eight months later. Seriously, don't knock it till you've tried it. I used to be skeptical of people who met their s/o online, and then I met my boyfriend and was proven wrong. There's nothing wrong with dating someone you met online. However, I do think there's something wrong with agreeing to a relationship with someone you've never met in person and spent some time with.

#49, all the way. Personally, I'm very skeptical of online dating because you don't see all of a person in lines of text (or even some video recordings or whatnot), but if you meet them in person later and decide it's love, I believe that's absolutely fine. The internet is just another way to meet people, tons and tons of people. Who says someone you meet in this wide web won't be the right one for you? Dating sites are pathetic to me, but developing friendships online that might turn into something more in person is just another way to find your match.
