Today, I met a really nice couple at a bar. We talked and the conversation eventually drifted towards online dating. I casually commented that hooking up through the internet was sad and pathetic. Turns out they met on Myspace. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was at dinner with my boyfriend and his family. We were talking about relationships, and I commented on how online dating was the dumbest thing ever. His mom and step-dad went on to tell me how they had met through an online dating service. FML
Is this catfishing?
Today, I went on a date with someone I've been talking to online for weeks. Unfortunately, it turns out they'd used old photos and misrepresented themselves, and I didn't find them attractive at all. Even I'm not that desperate. We ended up having an awkward dinner and I couldn't wait for it to be over. FML
Today, I went on a date with a guy I met online. It was going OK, until he started asking me if he should stick with the site until he finds the right person. I guess I know how he feels about me, at least. FML
Today, I made a friend on an online chat. We got along fairly well and even traded Facebook accounts. I found out that the two of us had a lot of very surprising things in common. We were the same age, we were from the same school, and we even had the same boyfriend. FML
Today, I declared I was done with online dating after several disasters. My friend set me up with a friend of her husband's. Turns out he's one of the men who rejected me on the website. He laughed when he saw me and said, "Well, this is awkward" and left. FML
Don't cheat
Today, I finally met the guy I've been getting to know online in person for a date. When we saw each other, we both realized that we had heavily Facetuned our profile pictures. The awkward silence that followed was the longest five minutes of my life. FML
Dating pool hell
Today, I tried instant online video dating for the first time, after not having much luck on other dating sites. The first date was kind of awkward, and "ended" with a kind of fade out and I could hear her chatting with someone else. "Hella awkward." Fair enough. "But was he cute? - No." FML
Today, I finally got the chance to meet this wonderful guy I met on a dating site. She was very excited to see me, too. FML
What are the odds?
Today, I re-joined a popular on-line dating service. I'd first signed up 3 years ago and was matched with a wonderful woman. After about a year, she broke up with me. I was devastated. After two years of trying to win her back, I'd decided it's best just to move on. Guess who they matched me with? FML
Fake news
Today, I went to a coffee shop to meet an online date. I couldn't spot him, so he eventually came up and introduced himself. It seems his on-line picture must have been taken before I was born. I spluttered "This isn't going to work," and promptly scuttled out. FML

One out of eight marriages last year were people who met online. I met my boyfriend online and we've been together for over three years and are now engaged. What's your way of meeting people? Going to bars? I think that's a little more sad and pathetic.

In your defense, I used to think the same thing. Then I went on a date with a guy I met online who seemed like he had some potential. He was by far the biggest douche bag I've ever met in my entire life. I think it fails more often than it works out, but it still works for some.

Listen. TEN YEARS AGO online dating was pathetic. Five years ago it was fine, but it wasn't something you told everyone about. Now, pretty much everyone who is single for an extended time has an online profile.

Thanks, #7, 'cause when someone feels pathetic enough about their inability to find nice guys directly around them, calling them pathetic for ending up with someone online is just the *right* icing for the cake. My husband and I dated online for a year or so. He ended up going into the military and turned down other commands to be stationed here just to meet me in person. We later got married. Tell me that's pathetic.

That sucks for you! I feel the same way, falling in love with someone without meeting them in person is pretty sad.

Love happens, it isn't something you can control 100%, like it just happens anywhere, online or in person.

If you actually had said word-for-word that "hooking up" through the internet was sad and pathetic then you might have been able to save yourself by clarifying that you thought it was sad for people to look for a fling or one night stand online, and then go on to compliment them on finding a "wonderful, lasting relationship." I think it depends on the situation, but since everyone's on the internet nowadays it's not that weird to date people you meet online anymore. To each their own.

People are so obnoxious. First of all, NO form of dating is "sad and pathetic". However way you find your love, it IS love and that's all that matters. I met my boyfriend by chance on myspace, and I'm the happiest I've ever been in my entire life. Had it not been for myspace, I never would have found him. I'm not ashamed, like I said, I'm the happiest I've ever been and I don't feel I need to apologize for that. This is our generation, and like it or not, meeting people on the internet is common. Rather than detest it, embrace it and see if there's something out there for you! You never know what you could find. ;)
