Today, I met a really nice couple at a bar. We talked and the conversation eventually drifted towards online dating. I casually commented that hooking up through the internet was sad and pathetic. Turns out they met on Myspace. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was at dinner with my boyfriend and his family. We were talking about relationships, and I commented on how online dating was the dumbest thing ever. His mom and step-dad went on to tell me how they had met through an online dating service. FML
Is this catfishing?
Today, I went on a date with someone I've been talking to online for weeks. Unfortunately, it turns out they'd used old photos and misrepresented themselves, and I didn't find them attractive at all. Even I'm not that desperate. We ended up having an awkward dinner and I couldn't wait for it to be over. FML
Today, I went on a date with a guy I met online. It was going OK, until he started asking me if he should stick with the site until he finds the right person. I guess I know how he feels about me, at least. FML
Today, I made a friend on an online chat. We got along fairly well and even traded Facebook accounts. I found out that the two of us had a lot of very surprising things in common. We were the same age, we were from the same school, and we even had the same boyfriend. FML
Today, I declared I was done with online dating after several disasters. My friend set me up with a friend of her husband's. Turns out he's one of the men who rejected me on the website. He laughed when he saw me and said, "Well, this is awkward" and left. FML
Don't cheat
Today, I finally met the guy I've been getting to know online in person for a date. When we saw each other, we both realized that we had heavily Facetuned our profile pictures. The awkward silence that followed was the longest five minutes of my life. FML
Dating pool hell
Today, I tried instant online video dating for the first time, after not having much luck on other dating sites. The first date was kind of awkward, and "ended" with a kind of fade out and I could hear her chatting with someone else. "Hella awkward." Fair enough. "But was he cute? - No." FML
Today, I finally got the chance to meet this wonderful guy I met on a dating site. She was very excited to see me, too. FML
What are the odds?
Today, I re-joined a popular on-line dating service. I'd first signed up 3 years ago and was matched with a wonderful woman. After about a year, she broke up with me. I was devastated. After two years of trying to win her back, I'd decided it's best just to move on. Guess who they matched me with? FML
Fake news
Today, I went to a coffee shop to meet an online date. I couldn't spot him, so he eventually came up and introduced himself. It seems his on-line picture must have been taken before I was born. I spluttered "This isn't going to work," and promptly scuttled out. FML

One out of eight marriages last year were people who met online. I met my boyfriend online and we've been together for over three years and are now engaged. What's your way of meeting people? Going to bars? I think that's a little more sad and pathetic.

In your defense, I used to think the same thing. Then I went on a date with a guy I met online who seemed like he had some potential. He was by far the biggest douche bag I've ever met in my entire life. I think it fails more often than it works out, but it still works for some.

It seems like a good amount of people think its sad and pathetic. I really don't think there's anything wrong with thinking that but I also don't think there's anything wrong with online dating.

Hm. I met my husband online, too. Honestly, it's a better way... I have a pretty good BS meter and catch inconsistencies pretty well. I've met people from online (for dates and not) for over 15 years, and I've never met anyone truly creepy. It's so much more common now, it's attitudes like this that make people hesitate to tell others. But when my husband and I tell people that we met online invariably we hear a story about somebody else who met their spouse/etc online.

I think it's sad that society has become so dependent on technology. Where's the romance in entering all your personal information on a website and having it calculate who your best match is? What the hell do you talk about on a first date when you already know all the basic get-to-know-you stuff from reading a person's profile? I just don't understand how internet dating can be exciting at all.

And as for the whole people can lie to you in real life thing, it's a lot easier for people to lie online before you meet them. Until you see the person face to face for the first time, you can't even be sure they're really the same sex they say they are, or if it's even someone just playing a prank. I'm probably prejudiced against dating sites as a good friend of mine met a guy on there and fell hard only to find out four months later it was just some teenagers being assholes. You also have dating sites popping up that cater specifically to spouses looking to cheat. Online dating makes it a lot easier to sneak around.

Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean everyone else does.

I ended up dating a girl I met on myspace for a while. Granted, I had seen her before we started hanging out. And we knew some mutual people. As far as where it's better to meet someone, bar or internet? I'd probably go with the bar. True, some girls act a fool at bars. But when you find a girl that's not acting a fool, you know she's not an idiot when she gets drunk which is a huge plus for a young adult. Also, myspace doesn't always provide pictures depicting how a person looks in reality. If you know photoshop and camera angles, you can take some pretty misleading photos. If you meet someone in reality -drunk or not- you pick up on mannerisms and quirks much faster than online. Mannerisms and quirks are the biggest turn ons and turn offs for people with me. And finally, the deal breaker, being able to have fun is a must. Young people at bars generally have a great time in a social atmosphere (you know the one where you can seem them react around others versus just talking to them online), you can never tell if a person is fun on the internet. Unless you're way into something like second life or the sims... That's all.

LydiaMarie, just becasue you dont like Internet dating doesnt mean its bad. I met my GF on Myspace. We sent tons of messages and emails and IMs and talked on the phone before we made it official. Dont knock something or diss others because you dont like it.

Hey, meeting people on the internet isn't for everyone, but as you can see many people have found partners that way and seem really happy. So don't be too quick to judge. ;) I met my boyfriend through my best friend via MSN. We've been together for eight months and we live a four-hour plane ride away from each other. It's long distance, but we've visited each other a few times. So far it seems to be working out well, he isn't some creepy stalker like most people thought when I first told them about him! Haha.
