Today, I learned in my child development class that lying in toddlers is a sign of intelligence. I clearly remember that I didn’t even understand the concept of lying until I was 6 years-old. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
The biggest lie
Today, I found out that I was held back in preschool because of some developmental issues. My parents didn't think it was important enough to mention it to me. Why hadn't I figured it out? They also lied to me about how old I was. FML
Bad guy
Today, I was babysitting my 4 year-old niece, who rudely but cutely asked me why my nose is so big. Trying to make light of it, I told her, "It's because I lie a lot, just like Pinocchio." Now she won’t stop asking who I lied to and told my sister and her husband that I’m a "bad guy." FML
Dense
Today, I tried to explain to my son that a 10.5lb baby can’t be born after only 6 months of pregnancy, and when he didn’t get that massive hint, I had to outright tell him his girlfriend must've already been 3 months pregnant when they met, and lied to him. I’ve raised an idiot. FML
Liar !
Today, I lied and told my friends I was a compulsive liar. Well, I think I lied. FML
Today, I was told that when I was in middle school and thought I was considered class clown for either making jokes or acting stupid, people thought I actually was stupid and/or mentally challenged. FML
Toot etiquette
Today, I recently taught my 6 year-old son that, to be polite, you have to pretend you haven't noticed if someone farts. Now it embarrassingly just happened to me, and he shouted with a big smile, "See? I'm pretending I didn't hear it!" FML
Let's goooooo
Today, my 9-year-old son decided honesty is the best policy and to never lie again. And by that, I mean he's decided to go ahead and blurt out every mean comment he can think of. In one school day, he made 6 kids cry, was punched by 4 other kids, was reprimanded by 3 teachers, and was uninvited to a birthday party. FML
Memento
Today, I have problems with my memory. I asked a teacher if I could let my class know a bit about it. The teacher said I'd already told my class about it. My class had even asked a few questions to me about it. I don't remember anything about it. Maybe it didn't happen and the teacher just lied to me. FML
Today, I realized that I hate lying to my mom about having a boyfriend. FML
Today, the three-year-old I was babysitting asked me where my boyfriend was. I told her he was at his house. I'm twenty and single. I lied to a three year old to make myself look less pathetic. FML

Just because kids don't lie doesn't necessarily mean that they're not intelligent. Lying isn't exactly a good thing either, so I think you'll be ok 🤷🏽♀️

There goes your job in the Trump administration! You probably like actual facts and not alternative ones!

As someone who works closely with toddlers, I wouldn’t be impressed if they were lying to me. To me, that’s not a sign of intelligence but of something negative. A two year old that I work with is very smart, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard her lie.

Keeping track of both the truth and the story you're telling does require a certain level of mental maturity, and also the understanding that everyone does not possess the same information. Lying might not be too desirable, but neither is volunteering the whole truth at all times. ( "yes, you do look fat...")

My (I'd say smart) two year old started lying as soon as she learned to speak, e.g. she asks for potty when she wants out of bed at bedtime (even when she literally went a minute ago).

At least you have a great memory...I guess?

You need a certain level of intelligence to lie, since it requires strategic thinking, planning, etc. BUT intelligence doesn't mean you HAVE to lie. This is basically a "all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares" thing.

I don't know about that. If toddlers are lying, sounds more like manipulation than intelligence. And lying is bad anyway, so I'd think it would be a good thing if they weren't lying. It doesn't mean they're not intelligent. And just because you didn't understand it until you were six doesn't mean you're not intelligent, either.

Lying is wrong, but the child needs to learn why it's wrong. Before they learn that, it's basically an alternative to the "fight or flight" instincts we have, in the sense that they use the lie as a method of protecting themselves from punishment. Learning how to lie is different from learning when to lie, and when not to. You may not have understood what lying is, and the repercussions of telling a lie, and being found out, until you were 6, but it wouldn't surprise me if you'd told a few before you actually knew more about what it was you were doing. Just keep an eye out for kids that keep lying, but don't let the punishments deter them. They'll probably end up as sociopaths.

I can't even believe you think this is something to be upset about.
