Today, I found out that the lump in my wrist that keeps getting inflamed and sore is caused by sketching and using my laptop too much. Good thing I'm in my fourth year of studying to become a designer. FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I had to buy a wrist splint for my carpal tunnel syndrome. Not because I'm a computer programmer or some hot shot web designer but because I spend ALL of my time playing Solitaire on my laptop. FML
Today, I had to buy a wrist brace for a repetitive strain injury. I got the injury because I was knitting too much. I'm 22. FML
Tunnel vision
Today, after years of being an avid knitter and typing for a living, I got carpal tunnel syndrome… from my wrists flopping around too much while I'm driving. I live half an hour away from the nearest city. FML
Stiff Little Fingers
Today, I found out that the stiffness I've been feeling in my hand is arthritis and that it's only going to get worse. Not only do I type for my job, I'm also 22. FML
Getting on
Today, I realized that every time I play video games, my wrist and elbows always end up hurting so badly from holding my controller/handheld games. I always have to apply bengay and wear braces. Arthritis is creeping up on me harshly, and I’m still young so this sucks. FML
Today, I learned that I have carpal tunnel syndrome. I got it from playing too much World of Warcraft. I got a disease in real life by living in a virtual world. FML
Today, a doctor examined my wrist, which is completely swollen and painful. He diagnosed a case of tendonitis and asked me, "Do you use this hand for a particular sort of sport?" I just smiled like a twit. FML
Carry that weight
Today, I was getting up from sitting on the floor. I lent on the coffee table to help support my weight and heard a pop. I'd bruised the tendons in my wrist and now have to wear a wrist guard for 6 weeks. FML
Read the TOS
Today, I had just finished an elaborate charcoal drawing as part of a college application that took a good week. When I read over the requirements, I found out it needed to be done in graphite pencil. FML
Today, I pulled a muscle. Not in any kind of sport or exercise, but while reaching for my computer mouse. FML

From sketching... Is that what they're calling it these days?

Yea. We all know what "using the laptop" really means, too.

You guys are doing it wrong, correct your postures.

Yes, I want to hold my wrist(s) in the air while I use my computer.

Do wrist and forearm weightlifting exercises. I never had a lump but my wrists used to have acute pains

Wear a sweatband on your wrist, or something else to cushion it. It worked for me and the lump went down.

I got it too; as you can see from my picture I draw and I drew too much one week... Holy hell it hurt. Feel for you, OP.

Immerse hands in a bowl of warm water to loosen the hand muscles. It should help the entire hand. Or you can put your hands at a sink of running water.

Sounds kind of like when you first have a callus starting up. Once it hardens it's fine.

I've had one for about 11 years. If its the same thing, it's called a ganglion cyst, it can be drained or surgically removed.

I have one in my wrist too- except mine gets inflamed when I play volleyball. Have you tried seeing a doctor for it? I've been told mine is a cyst

that's because you are hitting the ball with your wrist when you bump. Try hitting the ball a little higher so it doesn't hit your wrist

But I'm fairly sure that causes carpal tunnel, not an inflamed, sore lump on your wrist.

#37 - Both are types of repetitive motion injury.

Sketching, speedbagging, five knuckle shuffle...... too much of a good thing and all.....

Maybe check to see if there's anything to prevent your hand from irritating it? Like a special pad/mat.

Maybe you should go see a doctor for medicine for your wrist.

Can just buy one of the cushions for the wrists for computer mice...

Sketching = fapping..... If you keep it up, it'll turn into tennis elbow also... But seriously, I hope you find a way to make it feel better, and good luck in engineering

I think your replying to the wrong FML...

Have you thought about a wrist guard?
msbrendabella 10
I have it too.. You can massage it down and it seems like it goes away but it will come back...massage it down and then wear a wrist guard while you draw and use your computer.. I got mine junior year of high school from drawing and writing..it's been two years since I started using the guard and it prevents it from coming back but if I don't use the guard it does..

I'm assuming you're talking about a ganglion cyst? That's what I've got and your description sounds similar to mine. I'll have to try the wrist guard, I never thought of that!

I have that as well, on the underside of my wrist. Started when I was around 10. When it gets too big and annoying, I slam it down on hard surface so it ruptures. It is not a treatment I recommend to people. I tried it on another lump which came up on the top of my foot. I tried hitting it with a hammer to see if it would go away because it was irritating where one of my shoes buckled. When it didn't I went and had it x-rayed. Turns out it was arthritis. The Dr though my treatment was amusing, but not advised.

Ironically that is how doctors used to treat it. They would slam a book down on it to burst it. Now they have better ways of extracting it Less painful ones :)

I think it was called a Bible cyst since they'd use a Bible to hit it.

Yep, that sucks. There are things you can do to help alleviate the stress on your wrist and prevent it from recurring though; talk to your doctor about your options. It isn't the end of your design career if you take care of yourself.
