Today, I failed an oral speech because "I didn't look up once." The problem was, every time I looked up, my teacher looked down. Every time I looked down, she looked up. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, while giving speech in class, I choked on my own spit and had a coughing fit while everyone stared at me intently. When I finally regained my composure, my teacher told me my time was up and to sit down. I hadn't even got finished the first paragraph. FML
Today, I realized just how bad my problem with making eye contact is, when I caught myself looking the other way when the singer in a music video looked directly at the camera. FML
Optimism
Today, my teacher walked into class and said, "Look to your left and right, one of those persons you just looked at will fail the upcoming exam." When asked why, she said too many people passed last year's exam. She was dead serious. FML
Today, I had an oral English exam to present in front of three teachers. Halfway through, I completely lost my voice. They failed me because they thought I was trying to play a prank. FML
Today, I went to kiss my girlfriend on the cheek at school. I missed, and walked away awkwardly. Later on, a teacher stopped me and told me how bad I failed. FML
Today, we had a speaking assessment in Spanish class. When it was my turn, I yawned in the middle of a sentence, said, "Excuse me" and finished my sentence. She took points off because I hesitated and I spoke in English, not Spanish. FML
Lazy ableism
Today, I gave a presentation. My teacher deducted points because I "need to learn how to speak more confidently, because you often stumble over your words." I have a stutter. FML
Today, I gave a presentation in class. I felt pretty good about it, until afterwards when I was told I lost points for communication because I'd been chewing gum. I wasn't, I just have a speech impediment. FML
Smooth move, teach.
Today, I monitored my students as they conducted a lab experiment. I was walking to the other side of the room while looking at a student who seemed about to ask a question. When she looked up at me, I walked into a wall. FML
Today, I asked out the girl who always looks and smiles at me in class. I was surprised when she rejected me until I found out she was actually always looking at the clock behind me, and smiling when class is almost over. FML

Well, to be fair, you should be looking up the whole time, referring minimally to your notes when you get stuck, or to remind yourself of a hard-to-remember fact. Otherwise it looks like you're just reading stuff off a notecard. Which you probably were.

"Oh no such a dirty word!!" please.

You shouldn't just look up, you should make EYE CONTACT. Since you didn't look up at the right time, then you failed at making eye contact. You should be looking up way more often then you are looking down.

In my class, I was taught to have my speech memorized and not look down at my index cards for HALF the time that you apparently did. How about memorizing your speech to get a good grade? You totally deserve failing.

Actually it's better NOT to memorize your speech. It tends to end up just coming across as mechanical. What you should memorize are the main ideas that are in your speech and have notes to remind you of some smaller details and then it appears more that you are just talking about what you know and are better able to more relate it to your audience. And if you try memorizing a speech but are nervous or something, you could end up skipping important parts of it without realizing it and then you end up not making sense. So, no, memorizing to get a good grade is not a good idea.

Pff.. Pastrychef had a bad teacher. What's worse for this person, it's kinda common sense that memorizing everything isn't the best way, just as msnelly pointed out.

mcsnelly, your statement was simply stupid. A good orator is perfectly capable of making a memorized speech fun to hear and full of life, i.e. not mechanical.

Actually, Rhaegar, mcsnelly was completely right. In a setting where it's only necessary to get main points across, your speech should not be memorized. No matter how much "life" you put into it, it always will end up sounding scripted because, well, it is. Memorized speeches should only really be used in situations where the precise wording of the speech has to be perfect, ie, not in a classroom. Take a speech class and you might learn something.

The reason he pointed this out is because there isn't, to my knowledge, a type of speech that ISN'T oral. Putting that word in only provokes dirty jokes. It was an unnecessary addition to the FML. Jeez.

I had a similar problem in my speech class. It's frustrating.

This could all have easily been avoided if one of you was upside-down
