Today, I spent eight hours cutting, curing, and aligning on the racks, six months worth of beef to be dried for some tasty jerky, only to find out my dehydrator is broken beyond repair, and would cost as much to fix as the soon-to-spoil meat that I bought. FML

Today, despite being utterly depressed, I thawed 7 kilos of raw meat, in order to put it through the meat grinder. Not only did my mom forget to clean certain parts of the meat grinder after last using it, she also seems to have lost another part, without which the machine doesn't work. FML
Today, my daughter, who is going through a vegan phase, pulled the plug for our garage chest freezer, where we store our meat. That's $1200 of meat, rotten. My husband is so mad that he's been at the gym for six hours straight. FML
Today, I spent my entire day off making a brisket. It had been cooking for 8 hours when, just before dinner, I went for a quick jog. In that time my girlfriend came home and ruined it by trying to make it the way she wanted. I'm a chef and she's an office worker. We couldn't eat it. FML
Today, I bought $250 worth of groceries and was feeling rather good about myself because it's the first time I've been able to do so in months. When I returned home I found my fridge/freezer broken. Most of the food I bought was dairy or frozen. FML
Today, to save money, I bought some meat in bulk. When I got home, I was told that power to the neighborhood was out, and probably would be for days. Rather than let the meat rot, I barbecued it all and gave it away to my neighbors. The power came on while everyone was eating. FML
Today, my dryer was finally repaired after not working for over a month. I did one load of laundry and my washer stopped working. Another day, another $400+ repair bill. FML
Today, I bought some beef jerky. As I put the first piece in my mouth, I thought to myself, "Wow, this is tough enough to break a tooth." It was. FML
Today, I was working in a deli when I cut more meat than I intended; I basically removed my fingerprint via the deli slicer. FML
Today, my sister put a piece of leather in my homemade beef jerkey to prove a point. I ate it. FML
Today, I replaced the broken hot plates in my stove, only to realize that something else is broken, and it's still is not usable. I had to change it all back before I could even heat dinner. This was after I had carried the thing up and down the stairs by myself, and spent an entire afternoon cleaning it. FML

If it were me, I would try to get the dehydrator fixed before the meat spoils, even though it is expensive, because you will probably need it in the future

If the dehydrator hadn't shown any previous signs of being potentially unusable, then the OP wouldn't exactly have a reason to double-check whether or not it's working, you know?

#21 Blame that on the companies that design stuff to break so easily. People are often lucky if a large appliance lasts 10 years. Smaller appliances will often break in a few years. Phones and the like will run incredibly low on batteries and even stop working completely after a couple of years. Fixing something and buying the parts necessary can be more expensive than just buying a new one.

But "cost as much to fix" means it CAN be fixed. "Broken beyond repair" means it CAN'T be fixed. Can't be both.

I would assume it's similar to totalling your car; the price vs. damage would not be worthwhile. OP, I vote oven! May take time but if it's that or waste, **** it, why not try?

I dry the stuff using one of those large square fans you can get at Wal-Mart. If you're strapped for cash, try just doing that. There are some really good tutorials for it online.

There are a ton of dit dehydrators you can make quickly and cheep. Not as good but not as expensive

If you are particularly lacking in money, you can use alternate methods to dry your meat until you can afford to get a new dehydrator that is off the meat rack...
