Read the TOS

Today, I had just finished an elaborate charcoal drawing as part of a college application that took a good week. When I read over the requirements, I found out it needed to be done in graphite pencil. FML

Sometimes they RECOMMEND graphite but also allow otger kinds of black and white dry media, check again

My guess is that they require graphite bacause it's not as messy as charcoal. If OP has to mail it in, the charcoal would most likely get smudged and ruin the drawing. Graphite stands up to rough handling a little better.

I'd handle a rough handling from you anyday

Actually no, there's a spray for charcoal that stops it smudging, and in a pinch one can use hairspray

Take a picture of it, print the picture and go over the lines in graphite pencil

YDI for not knowing enough chemistry that charcoal and graphite are both carbon.

Except charcoal drawings are terribly hard to keep from smudging, while graphite will withstand having to be mailed with the application much better and without ruining the project.

Anti-smudge spray. It exists.

Even so, graphite and charcoal look very different on paper. They're completely different mediums, and anyone who knows about art could see which is which.

6B graphite and charcoal look very similar.

Throw in a few pieces of another form a pure carbon, diamond, and the admissions committee will magically not be so persnickety about which form you used on the application. With enough diamonds, they won't care if you have no discernible talent.

That's why you read directions 1st :D

That's terrible! D: I do lots of art stuff so I understand how upset you are. I'd be so mad. I'm guilty of not reading requirements, too. Maybe you and I both should start learning to read before we do our assignments, eh OP? ;D

damn, you gotta read the instructions! your going to college bro, you should know that!

Using charcoal ******* sucks. I used it in primary school and that shit smudges like crazy.

That's why you use a rolling rod or a sheet of paper... And you also start at the top left of the page and work your way down and across the page so you don't accidentally touch or smear your artwork. It can also be easily fixed with a kneaded eraser... Those things work miracles for me And of course when you are finished spray it with fixative or if you don't have that use light hairspray
