Quiet
Today, I was sitting in the hospital waiting area. An old lady was crying, and my five year-old daughter asked her, "Are you okay?" The woman quietly nodded, prompting my daughter to scream at the top of her lungs, "Well shut up then!" FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, my five-year-old daughter told me she was going to throw up. I told her to rush to the bathroom. I followed her a few seconds later, only to find her sitting on the toilet and vomiting onto the floor. FML
Today, my five-year-old daughter is absolutely miserable and constantly putting herself down, as she has been for a week. What happened a week ago? She bumped into a stranger at Walmart, apologized, and the guy told her, “Nope, not good enough. You need to die.” Who says that to a child? FML
Today, my tired son and I were riding a shuttle bus. An old lady got on, and I told him we needed to get up so she could have the seat. He started crying and screamed, "WHY? She's old, she's gonna die soon!" I wanted to melt into the ground. FML
Today, I was in line at the store behind a lady and her young daughter. Trying to be polite I smiled at the little girl. She burst into tears asking her mommy 'what is wrong with that ladies teeth'. Apparently braces on a 25 year old is not 'kid friendly'. FML
Today, I had to listen to my daughter’s explosive diarrhea while I watched TV. When she came out of the bathroom, she went white as a sheet. Apparently she thought she was alone. FML
Today, I noticed my daughter’s bathroom was dusty, so I screamed at her for keeping the bathroom in unacceptable condition. She had a panic attack and has been crying for the past week. She’s 24. FML
Today, I was sitting outside of a counseling center waiting for someone, watching an older lady bawl her eyes out as she exited the building. Absolutely broke my heart, because asking her if she was okay would have been intrusive and unasked for... and yet I can't get the sight of her crying out of my head. FML
Today, while waiting in line at a store, a toddler behind me was throwing a major meltdown while his father yelled at him, giving me a migraine. I turned to the woman behind me and said, "Can you believe this kid? I feel sorry for his mother." Turns out the woman was his mother. FML
Today, I overheard a lady tell her child in a store that, “If you don’t stop crying, I’ll tell that guy over there to take you away.” She was referring to me. FML
Today, I went to watch the Movie "UP." At one point in the movie I got really sad and started to cry a bit. The 7 year old girl next to me noticed and told me to shut and man up. FML

I kinda feel sad for the old lady. :(

Right?? I hope everything was okay for her!! It'd probably ruin my day if some smart ass five year told me that... Hopefully it didn't ruin hers..

Shame, your life must be so sad if you'd be so negatively affected by a 5 year old's comment. And one that isn't even yours! Kids will be kids and sometimes it can seem like they've just come down from heaven, and other times they seem to be straight out of hell. It's not really an issue of "controlling your child", which is basically impossible. All you can do is discipline. After the fact. At the age of 5 they have so many outside influences that it's really not fair to assume it's the parents' fault. And judging by how mortified the OP sounds, I don't think this is behavior they encourage.

What if the old lady was in there because of her husband, and he didn't make it? I sure as hell wouldn't want ANYBODY to tell me shut up because I was crying about it.

107 that's exactly what I was thinking. I know if my kid said that I'd drag her by her arm to the bathroom and whoop her ass right there.

If it irritates a kid then they are gonna say what they feel. Kids dont always know what's going on and how bad a situation is. Kids will be kids, punishing them or beating them won't stop it. Sure, she didn't have to yell it but I don't blame the kid. Ik a lot of people, no matter the age, that would say shut up or be quiet.

72 and 144 You'll be thinking that I'm sure when you're sitting in a hospital waiting on news of a loved one and someone, pint sized or otherwise, tells you to shut up. The woman nodded that she was ok so as not to make her problems public to a 5 year old who may not understand or possibly even be frightened of them. If I were her I would be even more upset not only at the rude comment but at the parent had they not acted to correct the child. No, it isn't bad parenting skills when children say things like that, they could have heard it anywhere, so no you can't control your child while they are still learning socially acceptable speech, but you CAN control the teaching of socially acceptable speech by working with your child on what is ok to say, what isn't, and disciplining them should they slip up in this sort of scenario. Doesn't sound like a parenting pity party, but op could have made the child apologize as well as apologized to the crying woman herself.

107, my thoughts exactly!

I feel I should clarify my comment. When I said "your life must be sad..." I was specifically talking about Kelsey_Katie, not the old lady. The fact that something awful must have been going on for her to be crying in the waiting room of a hospital was not list on me. I simply meant that if

I just meant it would be pretty silly to be upset by such a comment from a child outside of that kind of situation and I took her to mean that it would ruin her day in any situation. (sorry, I accidentally hit send before I was done) *lost

I feel bad for the old woman, she could have had something horrible happen to a loved one, it was very rude of your child to say that to an obviously upset woman. Although children say many rude yet honest things, I don't think that was the best course of action to tell someone to be quiet.

Sad. Yes, your kid is young but should already know not to talk to her elders like that, especially when crying. The makings of a future sh it head.
