Escapism

Today, my family had to travel for a funeral. On the drive down, I saw that my son had brought his Switch. I always suspected he didn't care about anything but himself, but this hurts worse than ever confirming that he prizes his stupid video games over us and our collective grief. FML

Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.

the only way this is a problem is if he was playing it at the funeral itself. playing it on the drive, or when otherwise waiting, or as a distraction to the grief is not an issue at all in my eyes.

As a grown adult, if I weren’t the one driving, I’d bring a Switch to play on the trip. That in no way suggests that I care only for myself. Are you expecting your son to openly sob the entire time to show that he’s mourning?

This I am torn on. 1. How old is the son? 2. How far did you have to drive? 3. How close was the son to the relative who died? The answers to those determines a lot. Let’s look at the third question, him being dragged to a funeral for a relative he barely knew, what’s wrong with bringing his switch, you’re forcing a child to attend a funeral of someone he doesn’t know, which would fall on you, not him, but if it’s someone he is close to, than it falls on him and not you.

there are a lot of family members, he wouldnt know; if it was one of these, why would he fake grief?

bringing his Switch has nothing to do about not caring or having grief, children need distractions just as we do as adults, it doesn't take away that he could still be grieving, now if he doesn't really know this family member it is of you and your husbands duty to have made that relationship impactful and actually mean something to him.
