Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, after my 5-year-old finally got over his grandmother's death, we went to a store and saw a lady that looked exactly like her. She came up to us asking if we saw her grandson; I can't get my son to stop freaking out. FML
Today, during my uncle's funeral, my four year old loudly asked, "Where's all the dead people?" FML
Today, while at my aunt's funeral, my grandma who has terrible memory loss asked me whose funeral we were at. I had to explain to her that her daughter had died. FML
Today, my grandma died. I was very very close to her, but now my kids are grieving the loss of their great grandma. Between my 7 year-old getting extremely mad, my 5 year-old being super whiny/needy, I'm getting no sleep as my 3 year-old is almost constantly having nightmares. I've yet to get my time to grieve and I'm tired. FML
Today, at my grandmother's funeral, my senile grandfather kept asking me "Where's granny? I've been looking for her, but I can't find her." FML
Today, I told my grandmother I was planning a trip to take my newborn son to meet his great-great-grandfather before it was too late. She had a guilty expression on her face. My great-grandfather died 4 months ago and my family forgot to tell me. FML
Today, my mom talked me into going to a funeral since my dad wouldn't go. It was for one of her classmates. When it was our time to view the casket, we paused in front of it for a second before my mom leans over to me and says, "What if I told you that was really your dad?" FML
Today, my phone made a random noise. I jokingly said, "Wow, I wonder who died now?" Turns out it was my son's grandmother. I had to explain it because I screamed. I also got to tell his dad that his mom just died. FML
Today, at the end of my great grandmother's funeral, her daughter (my grandma) told me and my mother that she doesn’t have a reason to come back and visit anymore, and that everyone in her life is now gone. FML
Today, I walked into my house to find everyone sitting around the table and looking sad. I thought it would be a good time to crack a joke and said, "What's wrong? Grandma finally die?" Turns out she had. FML

Kids are so honest... your son is definitely correct when he says that his grandma is more fun when she isn't sleeping. Sorry for your loss OP!

I would never bring my kid to a funeral. Not until they're old enough to understand what's going on. So sad :( and sorry for your loss.

A regular funeral, maybe. But this seems like it was open casket, that's retarded.
confettifarts 4
Yeah I just think its more of an adult event, than an event to bring your children to.
SApprentice 34
It really depends on the child. For some children, if they are very close to the person, it can be a form of closure. Even if they don't fully understand what's happening at the time, they might appreciate it later. If they have a lot of formed memories of loving the person, maybe years later they can look back and know that they were at least there at the very end. It really depends on the kid, since many can't handle it, but some can. I don't think that it's fair to call that decision 'retarded'.

I wouldn't call the situation "retarded." Many funerals are open casket. I agree that some children should not go to funerals as they do not know how to deal with death. They don't really understand it. But I agree with the commenter that said it can be a form of closure.

I never said you can't bring your child to a funeral, I just said I'd rather wait until they understand the situation better. I know when I was 5 I would not understand what was going on and probably wouldn't remember a funeral as something to remember the good times I had with said family member. Even just waiting a year or 2 is better. When I was 6 or 7 I probably would understand the concept better and probably would have an easier time with making peace that a family member has passed, that's all.

My nephew was brought to his great grandfathers funeral at 5, he didn't entirely understand at the time but a year or so later he understood the concept better and remembered the funeral and it did give him closure. He even told us he understood now why he was gone.

Some kids can handle it much better than others. And it can often be really unfair to stop a child from saying their final goodbye, particularly to a close family member, just because you don't think they can handle it.

That's heartbreaking, OP. I'm sorry for your loss. Your son sounds like a really sweet kid.

That is adorable. Something im sure the two of you can have a laugh about in years to come.

Yes, because it is perfectly normal to laugh about the death of a family member. The hell's wrong with you?
stargirl_95 24
#87 - they wouldn't be laughing at the actual grandmother's death. They would be laughing at the incident. Those actually are two separate things.

What kind of idiot take a small child to a funeral?? YDI.
Mifflicious 18
I don't what kind of a kid you were, but not all are awful. My first funeral was when I was about 5-6 years, no problems there.
cosmosis 12
Maybe the same kind of idiot whos 1st post on FML is one intended to stir people on a sensitive topic! The child as said above is one that loved his fun grandma! Maybe you do things different where youre from, but thats rather unfair calling OP an idiot because you disagree.
stargirl_95 24
There are many children who can behave themselves at funerals. I went to my first funeral at 5 and I was perfectly well behaved. Why should a child be deprived of a chance to say a final goodbye just because they're young?
Squeaky_Tomato 14
Everyone in my family went to my grandpa's funeral, even the small children. The littlest ones didnt understand what was happening and just wanted to play. Which is what my grandpa would have wanted: laughter not tears.

im sorry op but that is hilarious.. I just teared up from laughing so hard.. sorry about your mom though.

OP sorry for your loss :( but #18 I disagree, in the case of their grandmothers funeral the kid should come along.
perdix 31
Sorry, but open-casket funerals are creepy and bringing a 5-year-old to one is really stupid. If the kid had seen the AT&T ads, he'd think to give grandma some Turbo-Boosters or tape a cheetah to her back.
Yessi_Boo 14
Kids now-a-days aren't stupid enough to think they could actually do crazy things like that. They're not brain dead, they're children. The worst they can do is say something rude, but that's why you explain beforehand
stargirl_95 24
Children really aren't as dumb as everyone thinks they are. I have been to many funerals with young children and I have NEVER seen any child who thinks anything of the sort. Children actually are perfectly capable of behaving themselves at funerals.
