Today, my four year-old wants to throw out all his toys and get new ones for Christmas. His reasoning is that if he throws them away, there will be space for all new toys. He doesn't understand sustainability or environment. He's been explaining this calmly over and over again for two hours now. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, my child thinks it's hilarious to continuously pour his entire Lego collection all over the floor. When I tidy it away, he does it all over again. FML
Today, my son was playing with a piece of plastic wrapping and trying not to let it fall to the floor as if it were a balloon. This is after he got some kick ass gifts for Christmas. Kids. FML
Today, I finally got my 18 month-old to throw away her trash and dirty diapers. Now she throws everything away, and I can't get her to stop. FML
Today, my daughter had a meltdown when I told her I donated some of her old toys to Goodwill. It turns out Toy Story has taught her that toys have feelings and that she has a meaningful relationship with them. She's in her teens. FML
Today, my 16 year-old son had a tantrum over me asking him to clean up his room, and decided to tell my 6 year-old daughter that Santa isn't real, and that it was me who bought her presents. My daughter is inconsolable. FML
Today, my 3 year old kid wanted to do something nice. I told him he could pick up some of his toys. He washed my new Iphone instead. FML
Today, my 8 year-old adopted daughter told me she wants me to take her back so another family can adopt her because I don't give her enough toys. FML
Today, my manager told me to throw out some of the old toys at the daycare we work at. I can't because I've seen Toy Story 3, and thinking about them in a dump makes me cry. I'm 28. FML
Today, I gave my 7-year-old a snowglobe. I had spent the last week deconstructing it, putting an action figure of his favorite cartoon character inside, and then putting it back together. Later, I find it smashed into pieces because he wanted to "play with the toy it came with." FML
Today, I spent two hours convincing my 3-year-old son that he can't poop on his 4-month-old brother out of retaliation for the baby pooping on him. He did it anyway. FML

For what it's worth, teach him to give his toys away, like to charities (as long as they are in very good condition) so that he learns to pass it on rather than just throw it out. There is an excellent teaching moment, here.

Sustainability? Environment? FFS, dude, he's four. Teach him first that if he doesn't take care of what he has, it won't be replaced. Then later you can bring him into discussions about what it costs you (including costs to the environment if you wish) to replace items that still have use left in them.

You can try the old "no object permanence" trick. Have him "throw away his toys" in a box, store the box far away, and give them back to him on the Fourth of July, just after he "threw away" his new toys. He'll get the toys clean or dirty depending of if he was nice or not six months ago.

If he believes in Santa tell him that Santa doesn't know how many toys he has, and only brings him the gifts he has earned through his good behavior. If he doesn't believe in Santa, tell him that there's a budget for toys, and he's not getting any more than that. If he doesn't stop whinging, tell him that you will help him donate half his toys to Goodwill, and he can find out what happens come Xmas.
