Life advice
Today, my professor told everyone that he thinks all med students should be required to get a catheter and an enema at least once in their lives so they can relate to their patients, saying, "Gentlemen, it might change your lives." FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, my boyfriend had to give me an enema. FML
Today, at a gynecologist's appointment, I was privileged to have 7 co-ed nursing students stare at my vagina for 25 minutes as part of their training. At one point the doctor apologized for having to "open me up more than usual", but said she wanted everyone to get a good view. FML
Today, my doctor booked me in for an STI test. I was feeling confident until he explained it will involve having a catheter inserted into my piss pipe. He shook his head sadly and said, "Gonna be honest Steve, the pain's beyond belief." Great. FML
Today, working as an EMT on an ambulance, we had a patient who refused to accept that he had a massive GI bleed, despite the fact that bloody stool was flowing from his anus all over my ambulance. To make things worse, my EMT ride-along student puked all over the patient. FML
Today, I was at my gynecologist's for my checkup and had this sudden urge to poop - but it was my turn, so I just went ahead to meet the doc. The doctor noticed that I wanted to poop and also informed all the orderlies that, "This patient wants to pass stool now." FML
Today, I sat next to this really hot guy in my writing class. We struck up a conversation, and it was going well, until he began describing, in excruciating detail, his IBS and fiber problems, and how he always has to poop. Good to know. FML
Today, my professor tried to scare the hiccups out of me. Some pee came out instead. FML
Today, I attended my first surgery as part of my program at med school. I found out that when I see someone's intestines, I vomit. Even if I'm still wearing a surgical mask. There goes the thousands of dollars I spent on college. FML
Today, holding my teenager's hand at the hospital, I unfortunately had a front row seat as a nurse manipulated his penis trying to pop a ball bearing out of his urethra. He had been curious to see if it fit. It did. And no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t pee it out, so off to the hospital we went. FML
Today, I was admitted to the hospital for chronic constipation. I have to share a room with two other girls who are also having bowel problems. We're all on strong laxatives, and there's apparently only one bathroom in this place. FML
Feel like sharing it with the other FML users?
Thanks, your FML was submitted, and will appear in the moderation queue soon!

Having experienced both and seeing how completely unsympathetic my doctors were to pain and discomfort I agree with him.

Your professor is not exactly wrong.

I wonder if he practices what he preaches.

I've had catheters before. Like other people who've experienced it, I think he's got a point.

It's not a bad idea but that scale of one to ten for pain works well too
Xatraris 38
Usually does for honest people. I've seen some, however, that exaggerate the scale really badly. "I have a paper cut and the pain is, like, an 8!" yeah, maybe a 3 or 4, but okay. And some are trooping through pain saying it's a 7 but can hardly walk.

I think it's because a lot of patients feel that unless they exaggerate their pain level, they won't be taken seriously and given the 'good stuff'. I've met quite a lot of people who sat in their beds drinking coffee and reading the newspaper who told me with a straight face their pain level was at a ten.

@39 People have different levels of pain tolerance so individuals experience pain differently. It doesn't necessarily mean they are being dishonest. I have a low pain tolerance so I have to take more pain medication then most people and doesn't always take away the pain, just make it more tolerable.

While I can understand the reasoning behind his point, I believe I would find a profession outside medicine if that was truly required!

Then I guess you're not meant to have a career in medicine. That makes me happy.

I agree. Not to be mandatory of course, but police have to be pepper sprayed and tased to carry it. Being in the hospital is humiliating, scary and painful. If the people performing procedures on you have experienced it, maybe they would treat patients more like human beings instead of lab mannequins with no sense of dignity or shame.

This FML is so dumb. How is it even an FML? He gave his opinion and you're just in the guys class, it's not like her singled you out.

With my 15th operation on the horizon, I can safely say I agree with your professor. In fact I have a large history with X-rays, CTs, and MRIs, and a long time Radiologist told me I would be very welcomed into the field because I can connect with patients.

As Zun Tsu put it, "know your Enema".

I 100% agree. Luckily I was unconscious, when they inserted my catheter, but having it and the pulling out part.. thank god I don't know how it would feel to put it in.

I could tell OP's professor is a pain in the ass sometimes.
