Today, my boyfriend's freshly-repainted car got keyed. He's literally more of an inconsolable wreck now than he was when his own mother passed away last year. When I tried hinting that he was overreacting, he told me to go to hell. FML
Cut him a little slack - I know I cried harder and was in a funk longer when I got dumped by a girlfriend than when my mom died. The main reason being that I watched my mom slowly waste from late stage breast cancer over the course of four months and was prepared, even a little relieved (she was in a LOT of pain and the end was inevitable even before she started treatment), when she died. Meanwhile, my girlfriend texted me one morning that we needed to talk and then my 2.5 year relationship was just over. The difference between walking slowly in to a cold pool versus jumping in to the deep end.
Okay then...you should probably go somewhere, but not to hell. More like out the door, at least until he calms down if not forever. I realize he's upset, but think of it this way - it's a lot easier to fix a key scratch in a car than if someone had slammed into and totaled it.
Not really. You have to file a claim with your own insurance to get the new paint job due to a keying. That is if the insurance will even cover it, if not, it is out of his pocket. Paint jobs are thousands of dollars and if it is customized, he could easily spend $20,000. If someone t-bones you and totals your car, they pay for it.
I just don't get it. Why? I mean, seriously. It's a freaking car, they are meant to get you from point A to point B. What it looks like shouldn't freaking matter. And the way he reacted towards OP is just, well, it's just plain being an ass. She was right; he was over-reacting to his car being keyed, It's obvious he cares way more about the money he spent on that than treating his GF the way she should be treated.
"...the way she should be treated."
*facepalm*
How should a girlfriend be treated? You think she didn't treat him well by dictating how he should and shouldn't react to thing? Get the **** out of here with the "should be treated" bullshit.

You don't **** with a man's car... Because I'm sure it wasn't cheap.

It's amazing what people put at the top of their priority lists when it comes to reacting...

For some men their car is like their baby they even give them names, wouldn't you be upset if someone keyed your kid?

i would think the girls here would be more sympathetic to him.we all know we let things build until we break. maybe his car was his breaking point.

That's a BIG difference from crying over a car getting keyed. That was a 2 and a half year relationship; this is a guy crying over a bloody paint job.

I have the same situation now. Where my bf of two years cares more about his new car

It could be displacement, he is upset about his mother but instead chooses other things to reflect those feelings :/

I really like my car... but I do not go to pieces like that. That is just over the top past over the top.

Maybe you could just let him mourn over his car even though it obviously doesn't matter to you.

She treated him like crap though. You don't seem to have a problem with that part.
