Today, I found out that my best friend was having a birthday party and I wasn't invited. I had just finished planning a surprise party for her. FML
Today, I'd planned a surprise party for my best friend's birthday. However, she apparently found out about it and told me at the last minute she couldn't make it, probably to avoid being the center of attention. I'd already invited all of our mutual friends, so I had to awkwardly cancel the party. FML
Today, I was uninvited from my own birthday party. FML
Today, at work, I was supposed to have an easy two-hour shift, after which I was planning on attending a party that had been arranged to celebrate my graduation. Nearly six hours later, I am just getting home after being super busy and shorthanded at work for hours. I missed my own party. FML
Today, I found out my best friend was having a birthday party and I wasn't invited, so I asked her why. She replied, "What birthday party?" It was a surprise birthday party. FML
Today, I'm having my housewarming party and had prepared food, drink, and games for all the 19 confirmed guests on Facebook. I waited till 11, but nobody showed up. I checked Facebook again and realized I had accidentally put tomorrow as the party date. I have to work the whole day tomorrow. FML
Today, I was invited to a birthday dinner at a restaurant. As I was leaving, I get a text from the birthday girl's boyfriend saying that it was cancelled. Hungry, I decided to go to that particular restaurant anyway. Turns out the party wasn't cancelled. Half the party just didn't want me there. FML
Today, a friend asked me if I could help him set up the stage for his wedding. Feeling honored that he considered me a close enough friend to aid him on his special day, I agreed to help. Turns out we aren't so close. I was asked to leave after I was done because I hadn't actually been invited. FML
Today, I spent a lot of money buying a birthday gift for a close friend, only to find out I'm not even invited to the party. FML
Today, it was my co-worker's birthday but she told me not to mention it. Feeling bad for her, I went out to buy her a card, a present, and even a small cake. It turns out that there was actually a party during our lunch break, and I was the only one in our office not invited. FML

I feel like the way this FML is worded that the FML is not about the OP having set up the party, i mean atleast the friend would know OP wasnt lying, but i think the FML is about the fact said friend knows where op works and booked their services that day.. Maybe so OP would HAVE to miss for work? Idk...

Ok, upon further evaluation, I still think my original comment is a possibility, but another is that OP is referring to FML because he was not only bummed about missing, but that he had it rubbed in his face while working, adding insult to injury.

Depending on when OP got the invitation, it could've been too late for them to ask for the day off. It isn't as easy for some people to get off as it is for other. You can't just assume OP didn't try to get off to go to their friend's birthday party.

Sometimes you need be an adult and go to work instead of having fun. It sucks but they're doing the responsible thing. And if they're anything like me, I need a months notice to take any time off.

Depending on when and how the invitation was received, it's OP's friend who isn't much of a best friend... why would you schedule a birthday party and not check if your best friends will be able to make it? Unless OP received the notice that they would have to work on the day of the party after accepting the invitation, or the friend is the wrong one for just assuming everybody was going to be free that day and not checking before scheduling a party.

She probably felt embarrassed or awkward knowing that she let the invitation down for work then realizing she has to set everything up. Who knows her friend was probably giving her one of those looks while she was setting up.

@48, but if her friend hired her company to set up for the party, wouldn't it be obvious why they're helping to set up? Unless the best friend doesn't know where OP works, in which case a, "hey, I didn't know we were setting up for your party!" would sort things out.. the friend really has no reason to be giving OP dirty looks for working, lol.
