Today, a moth was flying around my house. Annoyed, I picked up a shoe to crush it with. The moth landed on a light fixture on the ceiling, so I made my move. Dead, the moth slipped gracefully through air and onto my head. So did the light fixture. FML

Not all light fixtures are necessarily made of wafer-thin glass or attached to the ceiling by half a rusty screw. I and several exceptionally tall friends have bumped into light fixtures before. Perhaps OP thought this one was securely fixed, and only tapped the spot enough to kill the moth. Otherwise, the moth wouldn't really have slipped off the fixture, but have been smashed into it.
Your light fixture "slipped gracefully through air"? You got some crazy fixture.

I agree zoolander, even though I think the OP should have just left it alone. I had a "pet" moth in my room. He died. Then, a smaller one that looked sort of like him came about. I call him Junior. Neither of them have ate anything... moths are pretty dopey anyway, so it's not like they last too long.

I don't think anyone's accused the OP of being cruel or torturing the moth. Most people are saying that you shouldn't hit light fixtures with shoes (solid advice, by the way), or that it's not much more effort to put a glass or jar over the moth, walk it to the door and let it go outside. And that way there isn't a mess where you squished it.
I'd recommend that next time, OP. The little thing was just looking for a place to go, not trying to annoy you =) I did enjoy the imagery, though.

One time at summer camp I swatted at moth with a pair of boxers and inadvertantly hit the 4 foot long light fixture behind it. The light fell half way out of the ceiling and I proceeded to stand there holding it up for thirty minutes waiting for the matinence guy to show up while my friends laughed uncontrolably. I feel your pain.

TrackLifee - my thoughts exactly. & at least the meat eating is supposed to be justified though in most cases it's not really these days, but I hate it when innocent little beings are killed for nothing. Like flies - okay, they may be annoying and dirty, but they're harmless (at least if you wash your hands as you should, they are). I have a phobia of butterflies/moths and yet I never want them killed, just out of my room and alive. I clicked YDI too because OP had no real reason to kill that moth.
There is a lot more to do about a fly than washing your hands. They rot your food.
