Today, I saw my parents for the first time in 11 weeks. They commented on how much weight I lost. I told how due to stress, I hadn't been able to eat anything for the past two weeks and I was basically unintentionally starving myself. They told me to keep it up. FML

Maybe they weren't being totally serious?

Either way, get on a healthy diet and start exercising. You'll thank yourself later in life when you're lean and healthy.

#8 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:03pm by mikew85

You lost weight, so assuming you were fat, this isn't an FML.

And fuck off, #1, noone cares if you are first.

#9 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:04pm by Travel

#9- it is an FML since the OP's parents are supporting a lifestlye equally unhealthy to obesity

#10 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:05pm by pleasetryagain

you can't blame them, they didn't know.

#11 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:05pm by skittleface

Your parents are assholes. Let's hope you can rise above your upbringing.

Here's a hint: don't have kids just to prove you can do better than they did--it hardly ever works out.

#12 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:05pm by aback

Same thing happened to me. I lost a lot of weight due to stress but my mother took me to the doctor to get tested for drug use.

#13 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:08pm by hellzyeah88

that's terrible! that's the stupidest and unhealthiest way to lose wait...if you were overweight, it's healthier that way than to starve yourself!

#14 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:09pm by loganh427

you deserve that, you should be happy you're not fat.

#15 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:10pm by bobhope125

What the OP failed to mention was that she originally weighed 345 lbs and is only 5'7" tall. Ginormous.

#16 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:12pm by hogermite

maybe that was like the instinctual answer...like in all those FML about making comments that could relate to height when talking to little people...

#17 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:13pm by save_me_08

*sigh* I really wish parents actually gave a crap about their children.
FYL.

#18 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:16pm by Rawrasaur

maybe they said it in a sort of kidding way? you know where there is a huge grin when they say it? but don't starve yourself, it's not good, and it will hurt you in the long run, when I skipped a meal months ago, my acid level went up so try to eat the 3 meals a day so your body stays healthy (:

#19 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:19pm by Nomad609

that's a really terrible thing for them to say. i'm sorry . =]

#20 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:20pm by codystar8

They aren't very supportive...

#21 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:20pm by rocker8877

Well, i'll assume it's doing you some good. Sorry about the stress, i've had depression a lot lately as well. Just keep up with your current eating pattern once you're fine ;)

#22 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:22pm by angorashi

FYL dude for non-supportive parents :(
I'm not gonna be a dick about your parents, because they're your parents, and even if they said those things, you probably don't appreciate other people calling your parents assholes and whatnot.

#23 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:22pm by allmidnighteyes

Parents are right, fat people - go be fat somewhere else!

#24 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:26pm by lazorzpewpew

#25 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:27pm by Squirrellord911

Sounds like my mom...she looks unhealthy, skin and bones, gross really, and gives me a hard time whenever i talk to her, its annoying

#26 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:27pm by wtfidunno

That's such a parental thing to say. My mom encouraged me to take diet pills when I was 12 and at a HEALTHY weight. I don't know why parents can be so judgmental about weight, my grandma is too. If I had kids, I would think they were beautiful no matter what, regardless of weight.

And dear god, if they told me they were under a lot of stress I would help them immediately...I'm sorry your parents suck.

#27 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:30pm by Jessaly

Two weeks with no food? Holy shit, you must have a lot of blubber to nourish yourself with for all that time.

#28 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:30pm by officerpat

It doesn't really sound like they were listening. You know, all they heard was blah, blah, blah... And then they just assumed that you had said you were on a healthy diet, so they said, "Keep it up!" They were trying to be all supportive and junk.
So I guess you get to pick: either they were ignoring what you said, or they want you to starve yourself until you're skinny. Either way, FYL.

#29 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:33pm by cutebutpsycho

My parents did the same thing , like" well, whatever works for you!"

lmao @ 28

also this is a dumb FML. Yeah your parents were kind of assholes, but people say mean stuff all the time, and besides, you lost weight, you should be happy no?

#32 - On 06/15/2009 at 2:45pm by genius_man16

Make a new diet book.

Tell your parents to go F*** their lives!

#36 - On 06/15/2009 at 3:14pm by Darkon

My mom would say something like that too... what's with that?

#37 - On 06/15/2009 at 3:19pm by beautifulskies

28, it's not at all impossible (or even that hard) for the human body to go without food for long periods of time. Fasting from any solid food for more than a month was a commonly accepted practice in a few religions not that long ago.

OP, hey, at least you're better off than me... my parents decided that I was underweight (even though it was PERFECT, on the dot) and keep trying to convince me to eat more and more and more and the stress from it has caused me to loose ~10 pounds. So they try to feed me MORE...

#38 - On 06/15/2009 at 3:23pm by PsychoX

Sounds like my mom. She thinks I have Cushing's disease because I've gained some weight. I can't really tell her I have an eating disorder that I'm trying to fight, so I went and got the blood test anyway. Parents can just be ridiculous when it comes to these things. She thinks I have a brain tumour, like seriously. *eyeroll* Hopefully your parents calm down.

#39 - On 06/15/2009 at 3:29pm by Lonely_Lez

Why do people always think losing weight is a good thing ?
I don"t know any of you personnaly, but i do think everyone of your ancesters fucked and eated everything they could. Being overweight is a proof that as a species we did something no other species could : we can have the luxery to be full when we want.

However FYL for having stupid parents who think stress is something not serious.

#40 - On 06/15/2009 at 3:30pm by 4ube

Yeah, those same ancestors didn't spend time in front of TVs, Computers, while driving while having less food than we have available now. Want some food? Go catch some!

Get them all worried for a little bit.
But I bet they were kidding. And maybe you should take it as a compliment.

#54 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:09pm by gingermonster16

If you didn't eat anything for two weeks wouldn't you be dead? Your parents probably thought you weren't being serious, duh.

#55 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:10pm by justjayit

Humans can survive for a month or so with 0 food and only water, about 3-5 days without water. I would imagine bulkier people can survive a little longer without food (afterall, that's what fat is for).

#114 - On 06/17/2009 at 10:28am by lazorzpewpew

it's so sad that so many people on here are encouraging this saying that it's great that you lost weight and that you should be happy....about what? being so stressed out that you physically cannot eat?! a size 0 is not a natural size to be unless you're 12.

#60 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:27pm by Goosie

Wow, a lot of you guys are being completely close minded to the fact that the OP is so stressed she can't eat. I've been there, not for two weeks, but for a few days. It's horrible being so anxious and wound up all you do is vomit whatever you do manage to choke down.

My advice is to clear up whatever it is that has you so in knots. FYL for having parents that don't understand, but honestly this is your fault, fix it. Get healthier the right way, eat right, try to keep your stress levels down (even though sometimes it's out of our control). YDI for letting whatever caused you stress to last this long when it has been hurting you like this.

#61 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:33pm by desertkitt

#63 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:41pm by JiggstheMan

wow don't do that. i've been there. you need to make time for some healthy food or you'll end up in a hospital connected to the ekg machine not able to breathe because of the esophagus spasms.

your parents are dickwads :P

#65 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:44pm by itsokaylove

wow don't do that. i've been there and i ended up in a hospital connected to all kinds of wires while having esophagus spasms. sure, I lost plenty of weight, but it wasn't worth it. make time for relaxation and also for eating healthy food.

#66 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:44pm by lovell_says_hey

At least you now know they care

#67 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:46pm by kc2

Were you overweight to begin with? If so, you should work on losing weight the healthy way.

I do the same thing- I don't eat when I get stressed out, but I'm borderline underweight to begin with so I just get bony and it's unpleasant. Happened the last few weeks of my last few semesters of college. Not fun.

#69 - On 06/15/2009 at 4:49pm by deaditegirl

FIRST! me me me! i'm first! see how stupid it sounds now?

#75 - On 06/15/2009 at 5:13pm by KiddNYC10

You have such loving parents....

What is up with all these uncaring parents I read about at this site?? I'm a parent and I would never treat my son or step-daughter the way some of these OP's get treated.

OP, I've been there, as far as the stress and weight loss goes. It's tough to deal with and does not help when people brush it off like it's no big deal. That's horrible what your parents said to you. They should have been there to comfort and help you, not make you feel worse. Hang in there!

#76 - On 06/15/2009 at 5:40pm by Jennydew

try going vegen for at least 3 months youll lose weight very quickly

#77 - On 06/15/2009 at 5:49pm by xstaticdelta

similar thing happened to me, and i was thin in the first place. that's fucked up. your parents will never change, but you can change how you react to their criticism. stay healthy and just let it roll off your back... you'll be a lot happier in the long run.

dude, chill, they were clearly not paying attention.
parents always do that, like my mom when she is driving, once i told her i got a 64 on a test and was pissed, and she was like "thats nice" because she was paying attention to the road, no big. honestly no worries they dont want you to starve yourself :)

#89 - On 06/15/2009 at 7:07pm by ashley_sparklez

Hmm. Been there :( Can't eat for a couple weeks and people keep saying "wow that breakup did you good," and you just want to punch them in the face because you want desperately to eat a full meal instead of just crackers, but you can't hold it down. I'd rather be minimally overweight and mentally healthy than average or underweight and fraught with mental and emotional distress. You can't put a price on mental health and peace of mind :)

#99 - On 06/15/2009 at 11:04pm by newguy12

My parents did this to me... I hit such a hard time in college that I lost fifty pounds and wound up in the hospital. My mom wouldn't stop talking about how "good" I looked while I was hooked up to IVs in the hospital, so malnourished I could barely move and suffering from muscle atrophy. Even working out and eating right, I always stay about twenty over the "ideal" weight for a girl of my height, but apparently being unable to feed myself was enough to get off that extra fat! Never mind that I was healthy overweight than when I was at my thinnest, when I started to get better and was actually able to eat again, one of the first things my mother told me was to make sure I didn't gain back all that weight!

If your parents are like mine, they aren't trying to be cruel. My mom just honestly wants me to be happy, and believed that if I were thinner and prettier, I could have all the things she believes I need to make me happy. She isn't trying to be hurtful, she just doesn't realize the impact of what she says.

Look, REGARDLESS of your size, it is always going to be healthier to be less stressed and eating something. No matter how over weight you might be, starving your body will never be healthy and if people truly cared about a person's health and not just making them skinny enough that they were attractive, then they wouldn't suggest that weight loss due to stress and starvation was a good thing. And, honestly, if these people care more about how you look than the state of your well being, then they are not the sort of people you need to impress.

Because this is the internet and it is bound to come up, yes, I am a "fat, ugly chick". Yet, somehow despite my personal appearance I still manage to be intelligent and show a basic level of compassion for others, even complete strangers. Imagine that, a person who isn't physically perfect and yet still has worth as a human being.

#100 - On 06/16/2009 at 12:13am by gildedmuse

Hurp derp durp! Unattractive people generally make up for it in intellect and depth of emotional development, so your point of having worth as an unattractive chick is tautological. However, this is the internet... and do you know why the net was born? PORN PORN PORN!

#115 - On 06/17/2009 at 10:33am by lazorzpewpew

#102 - On 06/16/2009 at 1:58am by U_idiot

Aww that sucks. I totally understand about the stress thing... a couple weeks ago I was so stressed that I couldn't eat anything either, I lost 15 pounds in like 2 weeks... NOT healthy.

#103 - On 06/16/2009 at 3:04am by alewiina

Wow, they clearly didn't think about what they were saying. And regardless of your size or weight, you need to nourish your body. Sorry to hear your parents were so rude :(

#104 - On 06/16/2009 at 7:40am by Rosebell26

#14 it wasn't intentional, so shut up. #15 stress is a bad thing, even if you lose weight due to it. But your parents were probably joking. We joke around like that about my brother, and he's only about five pounds overweight.

#105 - On 06/16/2009 at 1:14pm by Luneth101

Get over yourself. "Stress" is just life. Everybody thinks they've got too much of it. You can't blame your not eating on "stress," because I can always find somebody who experiences more "stressful situations" than you, and doesn't stop eating because of it. If you don't eat it's your own goddamn fault, and if your fat, it's good for you. So STFU.

#106 - On 06/16/2009 at 1:27pm by 151Henry151

You sound rather mean, some people don't eat when they're stressed. Just like some people eat more when they are.

God, quit bitching. Parents are normal humans too, they joke just like everyone else does. I guess Mommy and Daddy need to teach you about the joys of sarcasm. FYL for being ignorant. YDI for taking them seriously.
Wow I love you # 100!!! You are just so... right!

#110 - On 06/16/2009 at 9:51pm by lologirl419

Keep up your light eating habits. Chances are you were eating too much prior to your stress problems. I'm not sure how tall you are, but 5'7 for a girl you should weigh about 110-120. Don't stuff yourself, and dont eat unless you're really hungry, you'll be thankful for it

#112 - On 06/17/2009 at 4:56am by ConSeannery

huauhauaauha./..

this is funny, sounds like my parents. but since im used to it, who cares

#117 - On 06/18/2009 at 7:32pm by chellinha93

#112... for a 5'7" the healthy weight range is 118 - 159, according to BMI measurements. :) i think BMIs are largely bs and take that with a grain of salt, but i would put a healthy weight range for a 5'7" woman at more like 120-130. varies for everyone tho.

OP - sorry... i am sure your parents were either sarcastic or meant no harm, but even if you did need to lose a bit of weight, if they knew how hard on you it had been that way, they would be concerned. :( take care.

#118 - On 06/18/2009 at 8:04pm by lolcakes

Exact same thing happened to me after I got laid off. Well, for me it was stress and lack of money for groceries.

#119 - On 06/20/2009 at 4:50am by HeroicDude

LOL my dads like that too (doesn't eat when stressed) but I unfortunately eat to relieve stress/because I'm pissed off. It realllllly sucks :[

#120 - On 07/06/2009 at 12:50am by 8ccheng

OP: YDI for one reason. You want people to pity. If you didnt want their pity and attention, you wouldnt have spilled all that BS about stress and unintentionally starving yourself. WTF is that in the first place? Do you throw up every time you eat because of stress? Fucking eat the food. it doesnt matter if your hungry or not.
