Today, I got a computer. When I opened it, I found out that my dad had made himself the administrator. He made it so everything shut off after 11 o'clock, and made it so I couldn't download anything without his password. FML

Haha, unlucky friend. No pr0n for you :)

As the computer loads up, hold in F8 and then go into safe mode.. Once it's loaded up go into the hidden Administrator account and then go in and remove his account.. or make yourself admin? Or remove Parental control. Easy..

#331 - On 07/18/2009 at 11:17pm by Boden

you little kids need that!

#343 - On 02/05/2010 at 11:17pm by Crush89

Just download tons of horse porn on his computer. When he asks why, tell him that for some reason, you couldn't download anything on yours so you used his instead. :D

#2 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:52pm by kristenlee

How old are you?

#3 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:52pm by plethora

Whats wrong with that? Maybe you were abusing the privilege. His house. His rules. :P

#4 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:53pm by frootloop25

agree w/ #4

#5 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:54pm by hobagplz

Well guessing by the OP's name "graduate" he/she is fairly old, so that really sucks.

#4 has a point in that it's his house/his rules, but if you ever move out you need to have him fix that stuff.

#6 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:54pm by genius_man16

FYL because you can't find a way around...

#7 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:55pm by Djozz

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

#8 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:55pm by Arcterion

ouch

#9 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:56pm by nick1123

Figure out the password

#10 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:56pm by clockmaster

you can do something about that.

#11 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:58pm by she_wolf

Get a friend to hack it.

#12 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:58pm by brooklyngirl

do a "safe mode" restart...you can access any account that is on there and change everything with out a password...if its a laptop the easiest way I know of doing this is to purposely over heat it ;)

#13 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:58pm by lordotehtuba007

Lordotehtuba007's Tech Support:

To restart your computer in safe mode, purposely overheat it! F8 on startup is the hard way.

#340 - On 02/01/2010 at 12:22am by VacuumNinja

Figure out his password.

Your dad bought you a computer, be happy.

#14 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:59pm by Herbal

Format it >:)

#15 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:01pm by Katzilla_dances

This isn't a FML, kid your like 5. If you were 21 this be hilarious. If you want to know the password just type 1234567890...its a typical man thing

#16 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:02pm by DreMaMa

hehe this gets SO annoying, my parents did this for my computer, except it was with websites too. i know there's a whole you have to follow his rules thing, but that doesnt prevent it from getting annoying too... -_-'

#17 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:02pm by monkeyz0r

Only use #13's advice if you hate your laptop! If you need to get to safe mode all you have to do is tap F8 while starting up.

Download a Linux distro and install it to a flash drive restart the computer and all his settings are useless and unless he sees you using it he will never know as windows won't be active to log it.

#18 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:02pm by Darkon

And if it's a MAC?

#342 - On 02/03/2010 at 1:02pm by ccc01

Agreed with #13

You can change passwords in safemode by logging into the real admin. It has no password. Then you can either remove your dad's password or change it.

#19 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:03pm by hey_banana

No pr0n!

#20 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:03pm by flip4tmac

Get a Live CD of a linux-based operating system like Ubuntu. Get a USB stick or flash card. Insert CD into the PC, boot it up, you have your own operating system that your father can't access. Use this to download what you want and save it onto your memory device.

#21 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:03pm by anotherside

Because of your name, I'm guessing you just graduated high school (hence, still live with your parents) and will be going to college in the fall. If that is the case, FYL for sure, but if you explain to him that you will probably need to download programs for your classes and do homework past 11, hopefully he will understand. Or, perhaps he is already planning to remove his admin status in the fall, and he just wants to make sure you don't spend all summer playing computer games/downloading porn. On the other hand, if you are not planning to go to college and have no plans to move out of your parents' place, then YDI.

#22 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:03pm by jewjewbee

Think of it this way, your dads looking out for you. Yes, parental controls suck balls and we all hate them, but at least he cares. If you're over the age of 18, do you really need to be living with him?

His house = His rules

If you're going to college, he'll probably take them off sooner or later.

#23 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:04pm by redbluegreen

i had that until i was well into being 18 years old. my little sister, however, hasn't had it since she was 14.

#24 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:05pm by annasoror

hack that shit

#25 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:05pm by effthis

What you can do is purchase a windows install disk. Then just re format and re-install the whole OS and make yourself admin.

#26 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:06pm by cpljwlusmc

@19 The real administrative account can be password protected and if his father is able to do everything as said above he has probably already thought of that.

#27 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:06pm by Darkon

Hmm don't be so sure, not all parents are that smart.. since it's a hidden admin account his dad may not even know it's there..

#332 - On 07/18/2009 at 11:22pm by Boden

there are many ways to reset the admin password, just format and reinstall complete or use a linux live cd.

if you cant figure any of this out using google, then YDI.

#28 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:06pm by my_fml_account

One word: ophcrack

Google it, get the live cd, and all your problems are over.

#29 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:07pm by dpotts

That would be pretty dumb though, Darkon.

Adults are known to forget things.

#30 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:08pm by hey_banana

dude, i feel so sorry for you, i have to get off the computer @ 11. it SUCKS. damnit, ;(

#31 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:08pm by fylbiath

just reformat the computer.

#32 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:09pm by cowardm

That's why I hooked my own laptop in my room, MY laptop, haha, laptops rock

#33 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:12pm by scateice

Ouch, that sucks. Judging by the name, I'd say that's completely ridiculous.
Although, if it's on windows and you can manage to download this: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
You can reset or remove his password. It's very handy, I'd keep it on a disk lying around just in case.

#34 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:12pm by cal27

I know it sucks my dad did that to me (on my own laptop that I paid for) too!

#35 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:12pm by pink90

lmao, fucking retards, you don't need to reformat. It's called Safe-mode.

#36 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:12pm by FBIWarning

WELCOME TO THE CLUB!

MY dad has it so that my internet turns on at 10AM and turns off at 10PM
I thought it was okay during school days so I wont stay up att night on the computer
BUT
its summer and he still hasnt changed it back

#37 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:13pm by o_O_0_o

well atleast you've still got FML to save your life. somehow

#38 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:14pm by 399125__h

Wow, way too paranoid and controlling

#39 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:15pm by AdamGD

The solution is simple. Get an Ubuntu Live CD and install that. Problem solved.

#40 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:15pm by InfectedWithDrew

tough. i would have just given it right back to him...

#41 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:15pm by BiGbOyJoHn59876

FYL only because your username is "graduate", which implies that you're not a little kid and your dad is a jerk.

#42 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:16pm by silvermoonstar3

It's quite easy to hack around these things. Just search the internet.

But FYL for having to deal with this at all.. especially if it's Your computer.

#43 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:16pm by JonReb

My dad did that too... It turned off at 11pm and I couldn't download any of my music at all,

but I figured out his password so it was all good xD

#44 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:16pm by xPediophobia

Wow, your dad's a prick. Even if you were a child that would still be a ridiculous measure to take.

#45 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:17pm by IambecomeRAWR

Wow, all I can say is that sucks.

I know I am always on my computer after 11 doing homework and playing games.. Unless you are still in High School, this is completely unacceptable.

#46 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:17pm by Glam

When you're old enough to buy your own computer then you can use it whenever you want.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Be happy you got a computer at all.

#47 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:17pm by YouSoDeservedIt

ydi if you don't fix it, otherwise fyl for having to go through the extra trouble. If it's new it may be Vista (additional fyl) and I don't know if the safe mode trick works in Vista. Format should still work though, just do that.

#48 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:17pm by ABBenzin

judging by your name (graduate) i think you a little too old for that..

#49 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:18pm by BethanyKimberly

Boot windows from a flash drive. Figure the password. Google how to hack passwords.

Its not hard at all!

#50 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:18pm by HanMan

That is soooo stupid why the heck are parent so overly protective like that, they should know that you are not that young and don't need to be sheltered or something stupid like getting off the computer at 11 o'clock! Plus isan't it YOUR computer!

#51 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:19pm by AmyBeth

Reinstall the system and make yourself an administrator with all those parental controls used on your dads account. If u cant do that YDI :P

#52 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:19pm by lesb_lv

That sucks that your parents don't think you're responsible enough to handle going online after 11 pm. That's just dumb. If you've graduated, you're pretty much old enough. Some parents just way overdo things.

I'm just glad my parents aren't that computer-savvy.

FYL, and I hope you find a way around this.

#53 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:23pm by hir23

Way to let your parents control everything you do. My parents dont go anywhere near my computer or laptop.

#54 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:23pm by clockworkrainbow

Helicopter parent away!

#55 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:25pm by Phoenixman13

Hey, I feel for you. The exact same thing happened to me as well... for a good 6 years! :( It's unavoidable, you just have to learn to work around it... :OR throw a tantrum and try to tell them that it's stupid... :P

#56 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:25pm by divine

Well, what did you do for him not to trust you?

#57 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:26pm by spillproof

#47...he should be happy he got a computer that's basically useless for a college student?

#58 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:26pm by ellbtvsvm

LOL at #2. hm yes, just be patient :( but yeah it sucks

#59 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:27pm by Mr_Positive

aww im sorry
that suxx

my parents use to do the same, but not as worse(it blocked certain words, sites etc from loading)
though after getting a huge virus and having to clear my entire computer,
my dad never put it back on =]

#60 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:28pm by CelestialTala

wow, that sucks dick =P

haha. sorry! fyl

#61 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:30pm by xo_emily_xo

Like people have already said, you can easily undo that stuff. Being an administrator on a PC doesn't mean shit.

#62 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:30pm by Nakedsquirrel

Take advantage of the situation! Constantly annoy him by downloading stuff and requesting his password. Eventually he may just give u the password, or even take off all of the restrictions.

Btw, @ the people saying to download a Linux distro, that would work, except he can't download anything without his dad's permission. "hey son, why do u need to download a new operating system?" "uhhhh...". That would go over well.

#63 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:33pm by Ub3r_Crippl3

Maybe you should respect the fact that your father cares enough about you to want you to get enough sleep at night so you're not frying your brain on the computer until 3 AM and doesn't want you downloading potentially dangerous programs on your computer. Sounds like a pretty good dad to me.

I hated the strict things my parents did growing up, but now I thank them for it.

#64 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:33pm by audiogasmic

#62 if their dad is using a program to block downloads and turn of everything, those programs can be hard to even find on the computer in the first place

#65 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:34pm by CelestialTala

Maybe you should be grateful that your dad cares about you. Just a thought.

#66 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:36pm by audiogasmic

My brother-in-law did the same thing. I ended up going away to a summer college program where I could not connect to the internet because I had no control over my internet settings. My friend fixed it for me and I subsequently deleted the other account. Some people are just ridiculous jerks and there's no getting around that.

#67 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:37pm by Lonely_Lez

I would make his life miserable until he put it back to normal. No one messes with my stuff because they know better :]

#68 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:37pm by dino_rawr

Stupid invasive fathers. If you are old enough to be living on your own, but just can't [reasons not stated], then tell your father to butt the fuck out of your life and that he can't control what you can and can't do.

If you are a teenager, your dad is awesome. No p0rn for you! xP

FYL.

#69 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:39pm by Rawrasaur

my parents wouldnt even know how to do that.

#70 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:39pm by hotjavalava

I feel your pain.

#71 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:41pm by shaBAMalex

what a DOUCHE hahah

#72 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:41pm by bortzy93

If you are 18, either buy your own things or be grateful for what gifts you get. (and then make the necessary adjustments to those gifts :p ) If you are under 18, see audiogasmic's advice.

#73 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:42pm by jillz

2 - I love you. That is the greatest idea ever! I'm gonna try it out on my mom, and see what happens... xP

#74 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:43pm by Rawrasaur

Awww that sucks!

#75 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:45pm by Briton

WAAAAAAAAH! Angsty teen crying about his parents having rules while he lives with them! WAAAAAAAAH!

They've provided for you for eighteen years. You're free to leave and try to survive on your own if you don't like the rules.

#76 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:48pm by UGADawg08

That really sucks. Sounds like something my dad would do. Good thing I know more about Vista than he thinks.

#77 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:48pm by Cheezburger

If you replace the hard drive, it gets rid of the security. :D

#78 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:50pm by dougelo7

you can reset passwords with certain boot cds

#79 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:52pm by someoned

Your dads a psycho

#80 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:54pm by Ilovelife07

my parents did that with the computer in my room after we got wi fi in the house. i understand your pain, my friend, i understand.

#81 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:55pm by sharpe15

Your dad is a dick. Tough break bro.

#82 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:55pm by Travel

Dude, all you have to do is get him to log you onto his account, because you have to download something. Make sure it'll take a bit so he'll leave. Then go to account settings or my computer, and you can make yourself an admin as well. You can only change your account to it from his, but it wont look any different to him.

#83 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:57pm by Mikeyyy

Too bad it's probably not XP since it's new. You could easily find a way around it using cmd.

#84 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:57pm by Duckasaurus

Dude just google/YouTube how to bypass password it's not that hard. Same thing happens to my friend and I helped him out.
Ps. You could also download a keylogger (download somewhere else and copy onto your computer) and when your dad types it in it will save it.

#85 - On 06/06/2009 at 2:59pm by acev92

Ur dad sounds ultra controlling...that sucks. He probably put one of those spy things where u can see everything typed and prob saw this...

#86 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:02pm by Lisa_Emily

Same thing happened to me, just google it. It took me about 15 minutes to find a solution and shut off the parental control. YDI if you can find a way around.

#87 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:03pm by maxamillion529

Thank God for parents who love their kids enough to set boundaries for them. I know it seems to suck now but later on, hopefully, you will see that he is trying to help.

So many kids today are spoiled, evil, selfish little imps. Hope you dont end up one of them.

#88 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:04pm by littlegoldwoman

hack his user site and remove the passwords and restrictions? there's tutorials on the internet lol.

#89 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:05pm by Nev09

I see nothing wrong this, working in the computer repair field I see computers come back from the same people every few months because their kids get them infected with all sorts of bad guys. I'm guessing your dad got fed up with it and decided that he wanted you to stop fucking the computer up.

#90 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:06pm by Voloss

i use the trd live cd
(trinity rescue kit)
you can remove all passwords, do your things , then put all passwords back!

show him you deserve some respect by changing his wallpaper hehe

#91 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:07pm by madlogik

Use his computer and download a bunch of stuff. :D

#92 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:08pm by elsieenchanted

No porn for you, huh?

#93 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:08pm by lich

You don't state your age. If you're under 13, then I'd say your Dad may be controlling but he's the boss. If you're above that age, he should trust you by now, if he doesn't then there may be a reason for what he's done.

#94 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:09pm by jonnymohio

Same with me but I'm 13. If you're an adult, then that is a true FML.

#95 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:09pm by MyLifeShallBeFed

If this computer is your own (as in, you paid for it in full), he had no right to do that. If you did pay for it and he won't budge, reformat it (as in, clear the entire hard drive, install vista again and start new. Don't do it unless you know what do to, ask a nerd friend).
If it's not your own, there are many ways to bypass security on XP, extremely hard ways on vista, and if you're on a mac (which I highly doubt), you can by pass security in under one minute. Google various ways, and if nothing works- deal with it or buy a key logger.
I had to sit around with that type of computer for my entire jr high life, it's horrible and annoying.

#96 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:10pm by Liz23Ilia

#29, he still can't download anything though.

#24, that's prolly cuz you're a guy

#97 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:10pm by brink0war

Lmao @ #2.

#98 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:12pm by carpe_cotidie

wow ur dad is a moron, my parents do the same thing, just reset the computer and put a password only you know

#99 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:15pm by GMAN92

My dad did that same thing! I was so miserable...

#100 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:16pm by fml_again

Open CMD, then type in net user urdadsusername newpass

for example net user bobmiller bob185

#101 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:19pm by ed1721

GET A WINDOWS DISK AND REINSTALL THAT THING

#102 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:19pm by Nemesis2747

YDI for not knowing how to get around that.
are you like 9?

#103 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:20pm by Korgi

Ok, I'm going be a nice guy (and a nerd) and tell you how can you have full access.
Use Kubuntu LiveCD, just download the Operation System, Burn it, Stick it in the CD rom and boot from the cd
you can use the Internet and download anything without any permission.
http://www.kubuntu.org/

#104 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:21pm by Ebonite

Download password crackers or bootable Linux distros on a public computer and burn them to CD or USB stick.

As for whether this is an FYL or not, that depends how old you are.

#105 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:23pm by Tsukasa

So format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Than make yourself the administrator and lock him out.

#106 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:30pm by blueknight1st

Use Ophcrack to hack into his account and change the settings.

#107 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:33pm by cheese1756

# 104, not many people are going to learn how to bypass administrative accounts because they are not constantly on the computer. In fact, most people are shock when I actually show them how get on to an admin's account that is password protected.

#108 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:34pm by Monado

YDI for:

-Not respecting rules your dad has put in place on what is most likely HIS computer

-Being too inept to get around it

#109 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:34pm by L4m3r

He's making sure you use it what he bought it for: for college, not porn. If he's going to buy you your college and college supplies, I don't blame him.

#110 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:35pm by littlemisslee

i feel ur pain, my dad did that to me too....then he finally gave up on it when i started acting "more responsible" lol...i didnt see a difference. idk. maybee he'll lighten up.

#111 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:35pm by ohhsnapp

Your dads a dick for spending the time to sit down and do that to you. probably think you were going to watch or download some naughty videos or music but come on as a father he should be trying to develop a bond with your kid not trying to invade your space and put you on lock down what a dick u should tell em to go eat a dick

#112 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:35pm by ithedarkknight

#109, like I said before, not many people know how to log onto an admin's account when password protected due to not being on the computer much. Plus, it was the kid's computer as a gift, and not being able to use it even though he's going to college is cynical to him.

#113 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:36pm by Monado

If u download spywares... That can cause the computer to crash and loose files

#114 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:37pm by wolfsept

your dad is an asshole.

#115 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:40pm by kinkWality

I feel so bad for you I used to have something like that until I got his old one which still needs passwords for somethings, it sucks a lot

#116 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:40pm by MonkeyFeathers

You have to get a window installation disk, reset the OS and make yourself the admin.

you can just reboot it .. take it to best buy and ask them to do it . i don't think it costs any money (but don't take my word for it)

Good, if your still in HS. If your in college get your own computer next time an feel free to download all the porn you want.

#127 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:56pm by weirdgirl_sf

EASY FIX:
1) Find a friend's computer that has admin rights so you can download and burn a disk.

2) Go here: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

3) Half-way down the page, download the zip file for the CD (probably don't have a floppy on a new computer, so don't download the 'floppy' image)

4) Extract the ZIP file which contains an ISO file.

5) Burn the ISO to a disk. NOTE: You can't just drag the file to the CD... you have to use a program which has the ability to burn ISO files. There is a free program called CDBURNERXP which, as soon as you launch it, has the option to burn an IMAGE or ISO file. Select that option and select the ISO file you downloaded. Insert a blank CD and burn.

6) Take the CD and stick it into your password protected computer. Reset the computer. You'll want the computer to boot off of the CD-ROM. When your computer starts, it might say "press (key) to boot from CD" or "press (key) to display boot menu". If not, you'll have to enter the BIOS and change the boot order. You can generally do that by pressing F1 or DEL. You'll have to dig around to configure that. It's not as dangerous in the BIOS as people let on. If you're nervous, just be sure everything you change has to do with "boot order" and that kinda thing. Write it down, so when you're done, you can undo it if you like.

7) Once the disk finally boots, follow the on-screen instructions. If the program fails to detect your harddrive, you'll have to try a different program (which can easily be googled or binged for). Otherwise, use this site's simple walkthrough. BUT, on step 8, don't use "reset password". Instead, select "promote user" so you can make your account an administrator. You don't want to reset your dad's password or he'll know you screwed with it.
http://www.pctipsbox.com/forgot-windows-password-reset-windows-password/#more-1481

8) Once you're done, you need to take some simple pre-cautions to not get caught:
- If you install a program, you'll want to go into make sure 'NOT' to create desktop or start-menu shortcuts. Always check your start-menu and desktop to be sure they're not present. If they are, just delete them. Programs often create these icons not in your personal start-menu or desktop... but in a PUBLIC user start-menu and desktop folder. They're shared between all users, so if you delete them from your desktop, they'll be removed from the public folder (your dads account as well...).
- Don't store any documents in your "documents" folder. This will be a dead give away that you're downloaded crap. Go open the C drive, open a folder like "programs" and create a new folder that looks legitimate... name it like "windows settings" or something. Then, dump all your ish in there. When installing programs, maybe it's not a bad idea to install them in that same sub-folder as well. Or, just use a USB drive to store your junk or buy an external harddrive that you can plug in whenever.
- If you suspect your dad is spying, don't change any personal settings you couldn't change before. Basically, that means don't change system sounds, desktop background, desktop icons... etc. Since he's an administrator, he can reset your password at any time and log in as you. If he sees things are different, he might be like "wtf?"
- If you're installing programs that have an option to run at startup (like maybe a torrent downloading program.... or a new instant messaging program), you definitely want to be sure it doesn't startup when he logs on. Open the start-menu and type "msconfig" and press enter. Select the 'startup' tab and take note of what DOES start automatically. Then, when you install a program, check to be sure it didn't add a new item to the list. If it did, you'll want to uncheck the box. It will ask you to restart the computer now or later.... DO IT NOW. Once you restart, you'll get a notification that says something like "startup items have changed... " or whatever. You need to acknowledge that message yourself. If you don't, the next time your dad logs on, he'll receive that message and he'll be "WTF?"
- Never a bad idea to do private browsing. In IE7, you just click on the little shield in the top, right corner and select "in private browsing". Similar feature is in all modern browsers.
- Don't install programs that can change file associations. For example, if you decide to install WINZIP to extract files, it will change the default program used from the windows application to WINZIP if you're not careful. If you accidentally do this, look up how to change file associations in google.
- Regarding the "everything shuts off at 11"... you've really got to be careful. If he catches you on the computer past eleven, you're obviously f***ed. You can either change these settings or just roll the clock back until you're done... and then set it back to the correct time.

That's pretty much it. The moral of the story is to be smart about circumventing the security policies. Make sure your computer faces away from your door when you're screwing around... always have a way to quickly switch away from a program or whatever. Come up with some excuse now for when you get caught. Other thing is that your parents just want to keep you safe. Like everything, be smart and don't do anything crazy.

Definitely not advocating anything more than using your computer freely here. Respect your parents choices because, as annoying as it is, they're really trying their best to look out for your interests.

That's it. L8r

#129 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:04pm by thenasaman

@123: You want him/her to take it to Best Buy so they can reboot it... you do know that 'reboot' means just shutting it off, right?

I love how dumb you guys are. "Just download xxxxx". He/She can't download anything, idiots.

Also if the actual Admin is password protected then 'safe mode' restart won't work.
@13: The easiest way is to hit F8 during restart, NOT overheat your PC... LOL.

Just get Windows 7 BETA from a friends house and dual-boot with it (Google it to find out more) so you can have the old Windows, so if your dad checks, and the new one so you can do whatever you want.

#130 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:04pm by ttech10

Haha. My dad did the same. So, being the hacker genius I am. I hakes into the computer and found all rmthe passwords. Now I use the default admin account, which he did put an easy password on.

#131 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:04pm by slashstalker

my dad did that, only his cut off was 9:30 on school nights and 10:00 on the weekend.
i'm seventeen years old. fml.

#132 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:05pm by rachbeast

That's exactly what my dad did to MY laptop (except for the 11:00 thing).... if it's porno that you wish you could download, then there are sites you can go to, to watch it instead of downloading it. And then, as an extra precaution, you can clear the history of where you have been on the computer. But, if you're still not satisfied, I'd tell my dad in about a month, because you have to wait it out a little while or else it looks like you're up to something, that I needed his password to update the firewall and run a virus scan, or something of that sort.
Unless, of course, this is not your own personal computer....

I don't think this is either a YDI or FML, because this is actually typical.

#133 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:06pm by breaksprinter_

What if the computer shuts off at 11 and they lose 30 mins work on an essay because they didn't save it in time, being too busy concentrating on the essay rather than clock watching, could that happen? because that would be awful.

I never knew you could put a time on them, my brother's computer gets left on all night because he falls asleep on it. But he would have to put the timer on himself, we all have our own that no one else can alter, except mum's she hasn't password protected anything...

#134 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:20pm by catatonicsleep

My dad did this with the computer I got as my graduation gift. Needed a password to download anything (including much needed programs for work) and it shut off after 30 minutes of being idle. Kind of frustrating to go eat dinner and when you come back JUST KIDDING cant do any work or talk to anyone. This is the same person who would send me emails when I was in the other room and wouldn't understand why I didn't respond. Probably because I couldn't check it?
I get that your dad is trying to limit your online time, but there are better ways to go about it. Have a talk with him, make him understand that he needs to trust you a bit more with your time management, and that locking everything is really not going to help anything.
Best advice I can give is next time you buy your own, lock everyone ELSE out before they can do it to you. Good luck!

#136 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:31pm by lolzfmlz

My parents used to limit me in a more primitive manner. They'd just pull my internet cord from the router in Dad's office Sunday night, and I'd get it back Friday evening. Until, that is, I entered 8th grade and my school decided to get tech savvy and give us homework that required extensive research.

Now, what's easier? Driving your kid to the library almost every day, or just plugging a cord in?

I've been free to roam the web and do pretty much as I please for a little over a year and a half now. Thank goodness this is my PC!

2. reinstall windows, with a format of the hard disk, since it's new you shouldn't have too many files on there
3. make yourself admin, and password protect
4. laugh at your father for not hiding the disk properly

If you have physical acces to the computer, you own it
Solution;
1: Reinstall windows
2: get a fancy bootdisk that actually deletes windows passwords (they are out there and they are easy to find) or a bootdisk that just bypasses the password so it will still the pw will still be intact after you are done.
3: partition your harddrive, make 20 gig of your space unused, and install ubuntu on it, and make it so that it will only boot into ubuntu if you press a certain sequence of keys at startup (bonus is that you can dl whatever you want and since windows sucks, the ext2 or ext3 partition will be invisible to your father)
(side effect, you will have to tweak the bootloader [which is called grub] so its invisible)
4: Your best choice; buy an extra harddrive, hook it up to your computer, install an operating system on it (dont forget to disconect the first harddrive when you do this) then everytime you boot there is a key you have to press (f12 or esc or something) and then you can select which harddrive to boot from.
now boot from harddrive1 which your father owns, and make it so that harddrive nr2 never gets shown in windows.
(bonus: you get acces to harddrive nr1 when you are booting from harddrive nr2, even if you dont have your fathers password) (bonus2: since this function is included in every computer, it is made practically invisible since only 5% of pc owners wanna mess with booting 2 OSes on one pc)

okay, here's what you do.

I hope you're reading this, because if you are, i've completely solved your problem buddy ;]

go to system recovery and start the recovery, then right after it starts, dry boot (hold the power button until it turns off) the computer. this will delete ALL files. after which, you have to set up your computer manually like you would if you bought it directly from the store. it's really simple, but the actual reload process will take about an hour, or two at most.

-Jonny

#177 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:54pm by mehnameisjonny

theres a really easy way to fix this. You go into your registry and delete the system 32 folder. This is what windows uses to enable those limitations. if you delete it then you wont have it shut down at 11 and even better than that, your father wont be able to change the settings again (so you only have to do it once)

#178 - On 06/06/2009 at 7:03pm by Seti

The solution is simple.

Restart, hit F8, then select Safe Mode. Sign on as "Administrator". Go to account settings in Control Panel.

Select your dad's account. Delete it. Make a New Account, and give yourself administrative control, with a password. If you really want to fuck with your dad, name it the same name, but just use a different password. Convince him you have no idea what he's talking about when he says his password wont work.

It's a solution you really could have googled.

If it's *his* computer then it's his right to do whatever he wants to it. FYL in that case since I'm assuming you mean high school or college graduate.

If it's *your* computer (e.g. a gift) then there's little to no problem. Simply reformat the disk & reinstall the OS. The other methods listed will almost certainly work, but you have no way of knowing what your father did to it exactly, so it's possible he did a lot more than the restrictions. Since it's a new computer you can't have very much to lose yet, so there shouldn't be any reason to not reformat. (I'm kinda assuming your father isn't a Coreboot dev or something insane like that.)

If you aren't comfortable with the latter option, then your father did you a favor (and YDI). Sorry to say it, but ask anyone who does tech support if you don't know the reason. Sure, the restrictions do seem a bit excessive, but I'll bet your father knows you a lot better than I do. If you still don't like the restrictions then talk to him about them.

#211 - On 06/06/2009 at 10:35pm by funkymonkey90914

Feel ya man. My dad put that on my computer as well. I can still download things though, just not install them. Try this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ley9IBaGlAs&feature=related

it might help if he didn't go that far ;)

#212 - On 06/06/2009 at 10:42pm by valdigrad

this is when you learn to reset a computer and completely reinstall everything. I actually have a job doing just that. But I know it sucks to be blocked. my parents tried it once but failed miserably since they're horribly computer illiterate. Anyway if you bought the computer then yeah fyl

I'd exchange the laptop, if it were remotely possible, for a new one.

#216 - On 06/06/2009 at 10:55pm by ga2157

Simply reinstall your OS through a backup disc. They can be made as long as it's a Vista.

#217 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:01pm by Austinw80

Ooh that sux.. My dad did the same thing to me... He made it so I only had 30 minutes a day on the computer... It was designed for exremely obese kids (which I'm not) and to get them to exercise (which I did for about 5-6 hours a day

#222 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:15pm by 2983

open command prompt, type 'net user Administrator *' that should let you change the admin password.

#223 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:15pm by esmrys

there's something you can buy so when ur dad enters the password it can copy it. so you can dl when u want.

Ok easy fix numner one on the login screen presst alt + ctrl + del and log in as administrator and password is administrator that should get you into the hidden admin account then use control panel and set up you account to be admin and if this dosent work try the same thing in safe mode

#229 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:09am by BoJingles

Ask your computer expert friend to format it and let you be the admin... how old are you?

#230 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:13am by Epinephrine

My dad did the same thing to my family when he bought our new computer. The only difference is that I figured out his password when I was 14 and have been able to access the internet at all times and download whatever I want since then.

#231 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:18am by annabananaxx

i love all the advice on here lol. you guys are awesome.

#232 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:19am by atty11

That's the strangest thing ever, cause you are a graduate. What if you have to access something for a class in the night. Parents who do this are NOT teaching kids responsibility.

#233 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:26am by Joshbyegosh

My parents did it too. They forgot their password. FOL.

#234 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:29am by etanico

How old are you? If your father bought you a laptop, it sounds like you're young enough that he is probably well within his rights to restrict your time on it. If you're old enough that this should be unacceptable, buy your own computer and stop whining!

#235 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:34am by kellster

wow....its a little rediculious how not tech savvy everyone is. I mean yeah people know how to use em, but it astonoshing how people know absolutley nothing about the actual computer themselves. No matter what computer it is you can wipe the hard drive, this is call Re-Formating (windows/mac has already been formated on it so thats with the Re is there). Then you just re-install whatever copy of windows was on your computer. The CD usually comes with it, you can also go to the Microsoft/Apple website to get an authorization to download it if you don't have the cd. This usually jsut requires the laptop #/id which they should tell you where it is.
Once you have installed a Windows/Mac operating system you simply have to create your own name, make a password, and make it administrator.

#236 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:41am by Cain3482

That sucks! I wouldn't even want to use the computer if there were restrictions like that on the computer.

#237 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:46am by Redic_EmmaRose

Yeah #236, I know that is an option, but don't we have to reinstall all our programs?

#238 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:48am by etanico

@#23

Erm, so what if the person is 18? Why do people think that just because you finish high school that it means you should move out immediately. Some people don't get scholarships or grants. And not everyone wants to be in debt and have to payback loans. If you have the option of staying at home and going to college instead of moving out right away then why not take it? -_-

And on top of that, if the person is a college graduate then it really doesn't matter if he's living with his parents. If you give someone a GIFT then it becomes that persons property. Any parent who thinks it's okay to become an administrator on a college graduates laptop that they gave them as a gift, has some serious control issues.

Just saying.

#244 - On 06/07/2009 at 1:10am by dankadank

If you have a pc wait till he has used your computer, signed in under the administrator, get on it before you need to enter a password again and change it so that you are set as the administrator.

And to everyone who says his house his rules. while that maybe true as a parent you could be respectful and talk to him/her instead of being sneaky and forcing rules without even discussing them...

#245 - On 06/07/2009 at 1:19am by kimberlyjulia

************************************************************************************************************** dude funny enough my dad did the same thing to me with the same shut down time and everthing on my laptop. Lucky for me it was a from walmart were you can return anything so I dug through my dads trash can in his office and got the reciet and traded the laptop in for the same one. I set myself as admin right away and password protected it. My dad still thinks it is the same one and thinks i hacked it even though im an idiot when it comes to using tecnology. #254 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:33am by DoctorManhattan

#90, really? Kids know WAY more about computers today than their parents do (sometimes 12-year-olds included), and if anyone's going to fuck up a computer, it's probably the parents. I see it happen all the time, the parent goes to do something on the computer that the kid warns them against, and they get a huge virus, yet the parent still blames the kid.

My mom forced me to download Symantec anti-virus and firewall software on my Macbook Pro when I first got it, even though I told her it already had protection included. FORCED as in, she stayed by my side not letting me go anywhere and yelled at me constantly until I did what she wanted, like her typical psychotic, totalitarian self. The downloads cost $110 dollars. I was new to the Apple layout, and later found the proof I needed: the Symantec program statuses in the dock. I made sure to rub it in her face.

The arrogance of parents and our society that deems them infallible is probably what you're seeing in your daily job, not child stupidity. Either that or a six-year-old crawling on a computer and clicking on the pretty pop-ups that show up, not a teenager.

#255 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:36am by jnic

Are you twelve years old?

#256 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:57am by blaack11

1. Get a friend to download the Windows 7 Beta for you on a burnt DVD.
2. Create a new partition big enough to install Win 7
3. Keep the default OS as the auto-loading one, and password protect your "hidden" Win 7 account.
4. ???
5. Profit!!!

#257 - On 06/07/2009 at 4:47am by perennialartist

That's pretty sad on your dad's part. That's overly controlling at any age. Why get someone a computer if you're going to be the one controlling it? A family computer makes more sense since it's not for anyone's personal usage.

In short, your dad's a nutbar.

#258 - On 06/07/2009 at 5:02am by Sanrio90

There is a VERY simple way around this, and for those of you viewing you may benifit. If his account is labled as "Administrator" well then stop reading here. However if his account is labled as lets say "David" then you may be in luck. Shut down the computer. Turn it back on and while it is starting up press "F8" and you will eventually be redirected to a screen with multiple options. Select "Start windows in safe mode". Windows will take longer than usual to boot up than normal but be patient it has to load a few other things. When it starts up you should see a few new things. For starters everything will be bigger (I won't go into why this is) and you'll see a new Administrator account. This is known as the back door to windows and its what those guys at the computer shop often use to charge you $50 when you forget your password. Anyhow, click on Administrator and it SHOULD let you right in with full administrator rights. Change the settings and you're golden. Hope this helps. It was a gift to you and if you're over 18 you have every right to use it as you please his house or not.

my parents did that. for the next week, i made sure to do things through out the day to make sure i couldnt get on the computer to type up some "homework" i had to do, and my parents didnt like getting up from bed at eleven to come take off the restrictions. they also didnt like to come type in their password whenever i opened a new page and went to some god awful blocked site, like google. or my email.
they got tired of it and took off the time lock and parental restrictions.

Just boot up in safe mode and change everything.

OR

You could Google "how to make yourself admin on vista or xp" which ever one you have. This really isn't an FYL it is just a unnecessary frustration

#273 - On 06/07/2009 at 1:50pm by feeish

for those guys who keep saying download ____ to crack the pass... he CANT

anyway, heres what you do, simply delete an important windows file, you may have to show the contents of local disk C, so that the computor cannot boot up

tell your dad that the computor crapped out and you need to put windows back onto it

he will take the CD and put it back up

now theres a fork in the road: either

A: hes too stupid to know how the replace the controls and locks and problem solved

or B: he does, but now you know where the windows CD is.... BINGO, simply put the windows disk in your cd drive and reboot the computor from disk. Reformat the drive and reinstall windows YOUR way

hope your dad does not notice, and be sure to make him an account

or you could get a new hard drive and put windows on it.. THEN you could have both drives and download a pass cracking thing so you know your dads password that he PROBABLY uses for many other things. This way you can make his account admin with the same password and occasionally ask him to let you download something

#274 - On 06/07/2009 at 2:09pm by some_guy1092

Changing the settings of OP's dad might not be a good idea. You don't think he won't check the computer from time to time? If you wanted to do that you could just reinstall Windows...

I'd go with the "linux on flash drive/Live CD" idea here. There are pretty good howtos on the web. If you aren't proficient with linux and don't want to learn, try Ubuntu, even my mum can use that. If you do, Slackware might be for you, or Gentoo, though portage kind of sucks. If you are proficient, you'll know best which distro is for you. There's even a window manager that looks just like XP, forgot the name though.

#275 - On 06/07/2009 at 2:22pm by no_one

boot in safe mode. erase hard drive. reinstall windows. done.

If you have a mac then just find the install dvd put that in and reset your dads password.

#278 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:25pm by burk_five

My dad tried to do that on the computer I'm using now.

#279 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:43pm by RPGod

I have a lot of experience in this area... When I was younger my dad had "netnanny" on the family computer... It would block the internet after a certain time, replace curse words with ####, and not load pages if they were inappropriate. Now, if you paid for this computer yourself, or if you are an adult and it was a gift, then you deserve to have full use of it as you see fit. Talk to your dad, and if that doesn't work, take it to see your hacker friend. Everyone has one of those lol. But if you're under 18 and didn't pay for the thing, you are out of luck, it doesn't really belong to you, so suck it up until you have enough money to buy your own and/or get old. good luck.

#280 - On 06/07/2009 at 4:43pm by wearinsexypants

#294 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:12am by etanico

restart your computer and press f8 repetedly while it boots until it gives you a choice of modes to log into.
go into safemode, log in as the administrator (it'll give you an extra profile with no password) change any settings you need to change there.

#295 - On 06/08/2009 at 2:24am by potterfile

#299 - On 06/08/2009 at 8:31am by 10001110101

Dude, there are ways around that. You can change an admin password before it boots up by using a program that boots up off of CD, or external device. There is one out there called "Change NT" There are quite a few out there. Don't let your dad own you like that, crack the password and download shit right in front of him. I wouldn't take that from my old man.

#300 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:12am by DankJemo

Admin password is generally set if a competent person was installing the system. Easiest way is to use a pre-made Linux-based CD to reset the Admin pwd. Simple and clean :)

I love the general feel of comments under this one - sounds like a bunch of 12 year old script kiddies haggling over who has the best hax0r sk1llz

#301 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:56am by lazorzpewpew

Here. Why dont u do this?
Step one: get a job
Step two: move out when you have enough money for an apartment
Step three: BUY YOURSELF A LAPTOP
Step four: be happy and download what the efff you want

#302 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:59am by gclunax

I feel very sorry for you... get some computer skills, and hack past that crap. You can try using something called a linux live CD which will easily get past your dad's programs, and you can save all the downloads on a flashdrive or something like that after you get linux live CD to work. Linux is free, a CD costs like 50 cents, and a 4 gb flash drive is like $10.

I'm not trying to be a snobby geek, I'm seriously trying to help you out... no man should be denied his basic right to look at porn when he's bored.

Except i get three hours a day.
And i dont watch porn.
my moms just crazy like that.

#304 - On 06/08/2009 at 11:52am by Mollipop93

i can help you fix that
1) look for steps on youtube to hack the admin account (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3dbILovGaw)
2) when you create the new admin account call it Guest
3) bam your dad will never know that you have an admin account and when you install something just dont include the other profile.
computers are easy, my dad still cant figure mine out LOL besides he knows i would beat his ass if he touched my laptop without my permission (im 20 damn it )
oh and if porn is your game download google chrome and press ctrl+shift+N (just say chrome is much safer than IE, because it is)

#305 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:34pm by projectzro

#308 - On 06/09/2009 at 10:37am by takran

If you've 'graduated' you should

1) Get your own computer
2) Know how to get around that dumb admin crap
3) Move out

Follow these simple steps:

1) Punch your dad in the face
2) Tie Him up
3) Cut off fingers until he gives you the password
4) Dump body in the lake
5) Enjoy porn on your computer

Reformat the hard drive. Start from scratch. Set a password so that your dad can't change the settings. Come on, you're more computer savvy than your father, right?

#313 - On 06/09/2009 at 10:38pm by swagmonkey

wow good dad you don't need to dowload or be on at 11 anyway

#314 - On 06/10/2009 at 1:44pm by MetalCraze

I've read some of the fixes...and they're probably too complicated.

Here's my solution...this works only if your dad is not a computer wiz

To create/change admin account
1) turn on the computer
2) keep pressing f8 until the screen asks if you want to go into safe mode
3) press enter on safe mode
4) once loaded, click the administrator account (the normal and safe mode administrator accounts are not connected, Hence you can get into this one)
5) now go to control panel and create an admin account (make sure you don't name it admin or alter your dad's account so he doesn'f find out)

How to disable monitoring/time limit tools
These tools are often times separate applications or programs...so we just have to shut them down
1) open up word or notepad
2) type a letter init (it doesn't really matter what you type)
3) don't save the document and leave it open
4) try to shutdown (this will start shutting off all programs)
5) word or notepad will ask you if you want to save (click cancel)
6) Now, you have no time limit or monitoring program for this log in

ENJOY....yah since my parents really limited me, I figured these out on my own by fiddling around with the computer....NO HACKS OR TOOLS NEEDEd =) aka no chance of accidently getting something you didn't want.

lol ... i just hope your bios doesn't allow that sort of restrictions (i haven't seen one yet ... but it could be possible to have one that does that)

and you can easily do whatever you want ... just remember , google's your friend ;)

#16 my password and all of my friends passwords are specially coded so they are nearly impossible to guess, i use the same cipher as francis bacon for mine because i have all my financial and family info on my computer and i use stock sharing, amazon and other websites. if someone wanted to get onto my computer like they've tried it would be pretty hard.

all my girlfriends either don't have passwords or they are 'asdfghjkl'

way to stereotype

lol that sucks.
in a week im getting a computer, and now im afraid my
dad's gonna do the same thing.

This happened to me XD but it askes for the password even when I'm installing things like games or programs. What I did was get photoshop which I had been wanting for a long time, then go to my dad as he was getting ready for bed (and there for very out of it) show him what I was installing, then hand him the laptop while he entered the password while he installed it. I watched him enter the password. I got onto his account and turned off the time settings XD he never checks it so it works for me.

FFR. Seriously, you shouldn't even NEED the windows disk for it (though it's helpful to have them)

Yeah, the thing about parents these days is that most of them don't understand how much or how little you can do with technology. My dad doesnt know a thing about the little gadgets they have today. So he is probably thinking you are going to use it only for p0rn and emailing naughty things. When you won't. (or will you) Yeah, it seems parents don't know the meaning of freedom or privacy. And when you ask him about it. He will say, "you should be glad you even have a computer." When really what good is it with the jail cell known as parental controls.

#326 - On 06/22/2009 at 11:38pm by powermad80

And again, yo fatha should know better. I had my own laptop when I was 11 years old and my parents didn't do nuthin to it. All to myself.

#333 - On 08/22/2009 at 11:17pm by gorbagil

It all depends who payed for the computer, if Daddy bought it then deal with it and be grateful, if you payed for it then it's your property, stand up for yourself pussy.
