Man or woman?

Today, I was walking on a path through a park by myself. I glanced at the ground and saw a shadow behind me. Thinking of an attacker, I screamed as loud as I could and began flailing my arms to ward him off. Turns out, it was a jogger. He had to stop due to his uncontrollable laughter. FML

What the hell is with all the paranoid women? If theres a shadow behind you it doesnt automatically mean that youre about to get raped.

#1 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:07am by shiroun

Yeah a pro wouldn't be caught by his shadow!

YDI.

#2 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:10am by SaintKiwi

Why are women that afraid of attakers?Well at least you wern't carrying a gun.

#3 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:14am by benshady

Sounds like he should be more scared of YOU !

#4 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:17am by PlasticShark

HA. That's so sad. I wish I was there to see the jogger's face.

#5 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:21am by cchang604

I would've definitely joined in the laughter, don't be so paranoid!

If it had been an attacker, flailing your arms would help you how? Make him laugh so hard he can't run after you?

YDI for being ridiculously paranoid. I'm surprised you even pluck up the courage to leave your house.

#9 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:29am by boatiebanter

I agree with #1. This is so sad and stupid. In some situations, sure, but this, no.

Throwing your arms around and screaming isn't exactly attacker proof. I guess we can't all take self defence classes though if we're truly paranoid. Oh wait.

Now, this is a lesson to never come to conclusions too quickly.

one of the funniest fml's ever!!!!!!!!

#12 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:39am by greenyme

Why do women think every man is just tripping over himself to rape them? Women: YOU'RE NOT THAT HOT. Get over it. Maybe the guy on the bus is staring off into space thinking about his grocery list and you got in his way. Maybe you stupidly and inconsiderately walked in front of his camera while he was taking a picture OF HIS FAMILY. Maybe he was going for a jog and didn't give a damn about you until you started screaming and hitting him in the face.

#13 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:41am by lyndis

#13 - Not all women think like that. I certainly don't. I'm quite sure there are some guys out there who think along the same lines.

#14 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:44am by redbluegreen

As a woman, I've had it drilled into my head by my parents, teachers, everyone, certain safety tips to avoid getting raped or mugged. Always take out your keys at least 100 feet before you get to you car or house. Always check the backseat of your car before you get into your car. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night and especially if alone. When at a party or bar, never let someone you don't know get you a drink. If they insist on getting you one then go with them and watch them make it. Never put a drink down then pick it back up again, take it to the bathroom if need be or get a new one.

Men just don't have to deal with that. Sure they'll take precautions against getting mugged if they live in a big city, but how many men actually think there's a possibility that they could get raped on any given day? Unfortunately it happens more than we'd like to think, so for the OP to freak out about a quickly approaching shadow behind her is NOT bad. At least she only got laughed at and not something worse.

#15 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:46am by heyyou1203

don't flatter yourself. you're too stupid to be attacked

#16 - On 06/06/2009 at 6:47am by AntiChrist7

also, #13, being raped has NOTHING to do with how attractive you are or how you're dressed. More often than not, a rapist is someone the person knows. Otherwise, they tend to go for meek, shabbily dressed, unattractive women who aren't confident so that they won't put up as much of a fight. Rapists are cowards, so they're not going to go for the super models.

#23 - On 06/06/2009 at 7:09am by Slinky

The next day the jogger brushed up against you jogging by. He was later charged with rape, right?
There are about 100 FMLs about women flipping out thinking they're about to be raped or attacked by some stranger. Seriously, what's the matter with you people?

#24 - On 06/06/2009 at 7:14am by christopherlove

Trust me from experience, being confident and being strong (mentally) instead of scared, the mugger/attacker/rapist will less likely too harm you, because if you act scared, they will see you as weak and afraid.

#25 - On 06/06/2009 at 7:16am by MR_OHCRAP

23... Most attackers won't attack if the women is too much trouble.

#37 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:06am by andrewx10

#15 Sure women are a million times more likely to get raped but it doesn't help being paranoid about everything. Especially checking the back seat in your car! That's just over the top, and why would someone know it was a woman's car without seeing who got out of it then waiting until you came back?

Your parents are idiots to make you so paranoid. Be careful sure, but otherwise you'll end up doing stupid things like the OP.

#38 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:09am by aduck

technically....the OP could be a guy =D which makes the mental image of this happening even better lol

and #19..i would have no problem not leaving the kitchen/laundry room if i were married to you..i would've moved a tv in there though so you can expect shit to get done...and morning sex? forget about it...I'd be hangin out in the laundry room

#39 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:10am by jncwmnd

It didn't occur to anybody? Maybe it was so funny to the jogger because the author of this fml is a guy.... Now THAT's funny!!!

#42 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:30am by dyliumo

#15 Actually, men are far more endangered than women. But it's true that they aren't aware of the risks.

The positive thing about paranoia is that it makes you careful and therefore may help preventing. But usually, paranoids make the best victims. It is very easy to gain their trust if you know how to give them a feeling of security. Also, their credibility is low since many acquaintances can testify that they usually overreact and give false alarms. And since they already view themselves as possible victims, they are paradoxically more probable to give into that role: A self-confident person who perceives herself as a proud strong being will rather effectively defend herself because that behaviour is more in line with her self-perception. Most rapes don't occur in parks anyway...

BTW, I also imagined the OP to be a guy. Otherwise, the jogger would probably be rather concerned about getting sued for sexual harassment...

#43 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:33am by Indiana

Why didn't you turn around and look??? ydi for being so paranoid...

#44 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:34am by hcraes123

Everyones going "omg you're not that hot" "women don't think your so special"
but the point is, the media create such a hype over things like this. It's understandable to be paranoid. Especially if you know someone in your area is commiting such crimes, for example; my area. There's currently a serial rapist on the loose. Now, i'm not saying that I walk in the street and worry so much but there are others that do.
I completely have to agree with what number #15 has said. Us women do get it drilled into our heads at a young age. So there really is no point of throwing abuse at this person for it. Clearly they found it hilarious after or funny enough to put on this website? They put it on for the laughs, not for the abuse. -_-'

#45 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:38am by _cheeseballs

im just glad this girl wasn't carrying mace or pepper spray like some of the extra crazy spaz paranoid bitches these days. I hate all the people that just think the world is such a bad place, every shadow is a rapist and every twig cracking is a man about to rob you, calm the fuck down and enjoy life. its easier for me because im a big guy and a lot less vulnerable than small girls, but still, calm the fuck down. chances are, you will not get raped, you will not get mugged, and there is a certainty that you are a complete idiot for both screaming and "flailing" your arms around.
i hope somehow this gets on youtube so i can berate you for being a fucktard in another medium.

#47 - On 06/06/2009 at 8:51am by mannysfmls

#35, How would you know what kind of women rapists go for? Are you a rapist? Do you know one? Rape is a crime of violence, the need for domination, and cowardice, NOT sexual attraction.

And I'll agree with #43, paranoia is not the best way to go because yea, it can in fact lower your self-confidence and make you vulnerable. There is a fine line between awareness and paranoia. But men claim that women are paranoid WAY too often because they don't have to live it every day. However, even if women are paranoid it's not unwarranted. Rape is much more common that people think, than people WANT to think. http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2008/12/18/us-soaring-rates-rape-and-violence-against-women
And that's just reported rape, not accounting for the fact that the majority of rapes are unreported, acquaintance rapes, victims who are too scared to tell anyone because they feel that it's their fault, that they did something wrong. It's estimated that 1 in 4 women in the US will be raped in their lifetime. So yea, we have a right to be paranoid. We do need to learn how to control it and not let it control our lives, but that doesn't make it go away. The reason why rape keeps happening is because of ignorant people (like some of the posters here) who think women are just stupid and we think so highly of ourselves. Stop thinking so highly of YOURself that you think you know everything.

#49 - On 06/06/2009 at 9:18am by stryker0530

Actually, #15 is right. While all of those tips may seem over the top, it just stresses how much you should just BE AWARE. Rape happens more often than you think.
The OP did overreact. I just wish FML commentors weren't all so ignorant.

#52 - On 06/06/2009 at 9:23am by JLGaines

Statistically..
1 in 6 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
1 in 33 men will also be sexually assaulted.
60% of assaults are not reported.
73% know their attackers.

The most common scenario of "sexual assault" is this:.. Girl invites guy to her house. Girl and Guy drink some drinks, getting a little buzzed. Girl starts kissing guy, and making out occurs. Girl says stop, and guy stops. Then girl starts it up again, and takes off guys shirt. Guy takes off her shirt, and girl says stop. Guy stops. Girl starts it up again, and sex starts. Girl whispers stop right before it happens, and guy doesn't pay attention, because she's been doing it, but then starting it up again. Girl just lays there, and then doesn't do anything. Then girl says she was rape.

Yes, that is technically rape, because she says stop. But there are a lot of grey area's. This is also exactly why rape statistics are so high...

Or girls go and get drunk, and screw some guy... 50% of reported rapes are dismissed right away, because girls don't forget that regret doesn't equal rape...

Long story short, calm down not every guy is going to rape you randomly. It's more likely a friend that you take further, and at the last minute decide you don't want it.

#15, was "flail your arms and scream at the sight of a shadow and at the possibility that--gasp!--another human being is sharing a public space with you (god forbid you're not the only person, at least one with a shadow, out and about in the world)" one of the tips you had drilled into you?

there's being safe. then there's being paranoid (and perhaps a bit presumptuous and self-important).

#66 - On 06/06/2009 at 10:43am by hesodidnot

Everyone's making fun of her for flailing her arms around. It won't fend the attacker off, but if there would happen to be someone nearby, it might get their attention. And whenever I hear a scream, I always try to find the source to make sure the person is okay. Better safe than sorry! And creepy people can and do hang out in secluded walkways in parks.

#67 - On 06/06/2009 at 10:47am by kitkat26

#48 I find it funny that you jumped straight to him being a rapist to...I dunno.. A COP! Or someone else that would see these crimes such as a coroner...Someone's just as paranoid as the OP.

#74 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:24am by snowsock

U see someone behind you and immediately think rape??

#75 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:47am by gdmc

Your such a fucking idiot. Other people can be in the park jogging, too. Your such a joke to the human race, bitch!

#76 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:48am by happygoluckyhh

#74, well, as I and many others have stated, the majority of rapes don't get reported to cops, and (thankfully) most rapes don't end in death, so a coroner DEF wouldn't know as much. And the reason I didn't assume he was a cop is b/c a cop would know what a dumb comment that was: how attractive a person is has NOTHING to do with their getting raped. If that were true all super models would be constant victims of rape and ugly or normal-looking women would never be, when in fact it's quite the opposite. Someone's just as dumb and ignorant as 1/2 the people posting on this site :-p

and #66, I never said flailing your arms about was the best decision. I was merely trying to defend the fact that it's not overreacting to think a creepy, fast approaching shadow in a presumably wooded area could be an attacker. I agree she should have at least looked to see who it was. However, one of the tips we do learn is that if you scream because you're being raped, you yell "Fire" instead of "help" or "rape" because unless it affects the people around you, no one will care to help you. Case in point, Kitty Genovese.

#77 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:53am by heyyou1203

Just because you're a woman doesn't mean you're going to get raped. Damn, please do not show up in Chicago you will have a heart attack. Btw, in the suburbs we're used to little girls screaming so you might want to scream something of use such as "rape". "Help" doesn't work because all the little kids scream it during water balloon fights. Anywho, you'll learn this if you have a brain, the world ain't out to get you.

#78 - On 06/06/2009 at 11:55am by BulldogQB4

HAHAHAHAH i get paranoid like that at night too, so i understand where you're coming from =P but i carry pepper spray, so i have to keep my overreacting to a minimum XD

Women are afraid of attackers because they get attacked by them. Sexist pigs, you're probably the attackers. But really, acting like a dumbass isn't going to save anyone. The more scared you are the more danger you're in.

#86 - On 06/06/2009 at 12:54pm by coffeennicotine

why would you immediately assume someone behind you is an attacker?

#88 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:16pm by saailaway

I agree with #1, there aren't many real stalkers in the world and women just want to think there are so they can feel wanted.

#89 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:19pm by InfectedWithDrew

Okay, I dunno where this person is, but at the public park where I live, 6 women have been attacked in the past year. And I live in the suburbs, not the city. It's not an uncommon thing to be attacked in a park, so I definitely wouldn't call the OP "stupid" for what they did. They were just worried about themselves. Assuming it was a girl, then they have every reason to be paranoid if they're walking on a park path alone. Things can happen.

#90 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:25pm by x_battlescar

Did you think the attacker was a small puppy? What kind of human would be alarmed by a spaz flailing her arms around?

#91 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:28pm by Leaveittosteven

What a fucking douchewaffle. Yr retarded.

#92 - On 06/06/2009 at 1:29pm by Talia070

#77 Why is it not over the top to assume someone in a PARK is automatically going to rape you? As others have said, this is a public place, and maybe she was even walking on a jogging trail!

If he was a "real" rapist he wouldn't have been that obvious about it. And through all your statistics you forget to mention that it's more likely the woman will be killed if she makes a fuss. So this woman screaming and flailing her arms around would have made things worse for her. Not only that, but she didn't EVEN FUCKING TURN AROUND AND LOOK. That's the part that really gets me pissed. Maybe you should look at who's coming before freaking the fuck out?

Should women be aware of their surroundings? Yes, of course. But this woman (and you it sounds like) is far past being "aware" and "cautious" and way too far into the realm of "fucking paranoid".

This shit needs to stop. I can't count the number of times I'll be walking downtown and have women walking alone just run away from me because I /must/ be a rapist. It's stupid and unnecessary.

#86 / coffeennicotine: Previous posts by you, your nick, and this post show that you are an idiot. Shut up. "You challenge my conclusions. You must be a rapist!" We are all stupider having read your message.

heyyou1203: I've seen your posts as well. You are a bit militant regarding femininty and women's rights and all that, yet the things you say are rarely empowering, educational, or in any other way helpful.

The fact that you don't want to deal with is that enough women have done what the OP did that no one believes you any more. Women have "cried wolf", and what you see in this thread is the result.

The solution is for you to DEFEND YOURSELF. By the time you need help, it's too late. Rarely will help come in time, if it comes at all. Instead of living your life in fear and having people call you an idiot like the OP, learn to use a weapon and carry it. Take a boxing class. Do whatever it takes to make yourself FEEL and BE safe.

What the stats are on actual rapes/attacks is not the issue here at all. It's the fact that women have lost credibility. We no longer sympathize with you because so often it's something ridiculous, like the OP.

Some paranoia might be a good thing. 8% of women will have a stalker in their lifetime, those aren't really good odds that any one particular woman is going to have one, but they still have to be careful. If you're really frightened, take some self-defense or carry some mace, if you're really scared then carry a taser(sp) just don't break them out whenever you see a shadow. Because if you spray some innocent person because they're walking behind you, or because they say hi as they pass you on the sidewalk, well, then you're probably going to be charged with assault.

#104 - On 06/06/2009 at 3:49pm by Thecloak

...because every shadow in every park belongs to a rapist. I highly recommend therapy.

#105 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:11pm by wasabipeas

OP: I'm going to repeat what many others have said, you are a fucking moron. Rape statistics are highly unreliable because they are created by people who have some stake in them. I tend not to trust any stats put forth by feminist organizations because they use them as fuel for the man-hate that they want. My fiance had consentual sex with a girl who later told her parents that he raped her so that she wouldn't get in trouble for being out past her curfew. So yeah, women are dumb.

#106 - On 06/06/2009 at 4:14pm by Gingerly

If the jogger behind her was an attacker, flailing her arms certainly would have helped. A study conducted some time ago on prison inmates convicted of sexual harassment/rape crimes agreed that the more trouble a woman caused for them, the less likely they were to pursue her.

However, the OP really should have turned to look at the person behind her first. But as a female, I share this paranoia with you. The world is a scary place, and it's filled with dangerous people. I have a friend who can't even walk home without feeling sexually harassed every.single.day. And not by just one, but by many! (And it's not the way she dresses or acts, so don't you morons give me any shit). How can you distinguish between a pervert and a potential attacker? Better safe than sorry.

No, zitromd, not better safe than sorry. How about, "Give me liberty, or give me death!"

If you aren't willing to defend yourself, you don't deserve the freedom you used to have.

Freedom is not free.

Wow, someone thinks highly of themselves, assuming that another perdestrian has a burning desire to assault you in any way possible :)
Glad to see you own a public park.
Bitch.

#113 - On 06/06/2009 at 5:51pm by hogwartian02

#110- Flailing her arms around and screaming was the OP's way of defending herself. Although it could have been a better method, that's what she did regardless.

"If you aren't willing to defend yourself, you don't deserve the freedom you used to have." And what about nonviolent protesters? I don't see how this argument is congruent to any aspects of the comment I made.

#114 - On 06/06/2009 at 5:52pm by zitromd

Thuryn, #100, I'm sorry that you no longer sympathize with women's problems in today's world. I understand the frustration that comes when you hear a lot of feminists saying that we need rights yet you don't see any of the problem yourself, all you see is women taking advantage of the system such as "crying wolf" or snapping at a man for making an innocuous comment. I know many men who feel like they can't even be around women let alone talk to them without feeling like they've done something wrong.

I am in no way saying that all women are perfect. However, men are equally as imperfect as women are. While some women are on the uber left "feminazi" side, some men are on the ultra right "a woman's place is in the home and pop out babies" side. And everywhere inb/w.

However much these women taint your view of feminism though, it does not change the fact that serious crimes, such as rape, do happen and are more common than you think. A lot of people, men and women, tell themselves that it's that bad in order to protect themselves: men to protect themselves as being viewed as a rapist, and women who think "well the reason she got raped is because she dressed like a whore, so if I don't dress that way I'm safe." Which is false. Ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away, and as obvious by these posts, "militant" feminists like me seem to be the only ones who care and are helping to put a stop to it instead of bitching on FML. I could tell you about the efforts I'm involved in but I hardly think this is the right forum for that.

A hippie on the streets of Cambridge once sold me a bumper sticker that said, "Stop bitching... start a revolution!"

you dont understand.. many women will think they are ok.. then suddenly soemthing happens. WE HAVE TO BECAREFUL! we are prey! she is very smart to be aware... because if she wasn't.. say one day something does happen... well you get the picture. so try to understand the danger. this world is not safe.. we all think we are invicible.. but that's what gets us killed.

#116 / heyyou1203: Now THAT... I can handle, though I do have a problem with one part...

I don't think rapes and assaults happen more often than we realize. I think we realize it just fine. It really is just the paranoiacs that are in your way.

I know one woman just off the top of my head who was raped, and another who lived in an abusive relationship. I'm well aware that these things happen. My wife actually *is* a stay-at-home mom, ironically, though it's by her own choice. She had four different jobs after we got married, both salaried and hourly, and hated them all. It just wasn't worth the money, so I told her she could just quit and stay home if she wanted. Four months later, she did, and we've never looked back.

Anyway, I don't think it's awareness, strictly speaking, that the threats are real that is the problem. People know that rape is real. It's in the news all the time. The problem is more the "won't happen to me" syndrome, just like a house fire, coupled with the paranoiacs. The end result is people not taking real precautions and instead freaking out and "flailing their arms". *sigh* It may help, but it's a poor substitute for aikido (sp?) or a stun gun... or both.

I think the people saying "NOT EVERY MAN WANTS U" are wrong, but they aren't far off the mark in a case like this. The OP seriously overreacted. She should have just taken a step to the side (for distance) and looked.

#129 - On 06/07/2009 at 1:49am by thuryn

YDI. I will admit that I am pretty paranoid about safety issues as well. But when you're in a public place like a park, you should expect that there will be other people there.

#130 - On 06/07/2009 at 1:52am by Kitty34

I love how seriosuly people take these, Geeze, calm down people!

#131 - On 06/07/2009 at 2:50am by DieselGirl

YDI. Do you think you own the park path or something? Obviously other people are gonna use the path too. You should've looked anyways, retard.

#132 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:35am by marycjones

Ok, let's pretend you were actually about to be raped...
You realize this is a man and not an impressionable cougar???
Flailing your arms is not going to save you!
You deserved it but your life is effed because it could happen.
And that my friend is serious business.

#133 - On 06/07/2009 at 3:50am by kewlkidd

i'm sorry...who flails their arms around in hopes that it will "ward off" their attacker?

#134 - On 06/07/2009 at 10:02am by halapalu

What the heck is it with men? Seriously, I'd rather be paranoid than dead. Besides, waving your arms is better than doing nothing. I laughed at the girl flailing her arms in this fml story, but the story is not the point. The ignorant comments are what sent me over the edge. Rapists go after easy victims, not those who make a lot of noise. Yes, she probably over-reacted and should have simply gotten to a safer area rather than assuming the man was a rapist, but the comments as to how "she's not that hot" and how women just assume they will be raped...these are marks of ignorance. Rape is serious. Get it into your head. Number 53, most sexual assaults are more like this (true story): An older neighborhood guy takes an girl into his room and assaults her. She is so scared that she freezes. She doesn't know what's going on. She tries to get up. He holds her down. It doesn't even hit her what happened until hours later. The guy doesn't get prosecuted because it's her word against his, and she's not even sure she wants to tell the police. The guy gets away with it, probably doing it again to some other girl. THAT is sexual assault. I hope that you people realize that a victim is indeed a victim, not just some stupid girl who went and got raped because she wore a low-cut shirt. When it happens to your mother, sister, girlfriend, or daughter, then you'll understand...but I pray it never does happen.

#135 - On 06/07/2009 at 12:37pm by elisarivera

Good speech, #136. Though, if you're afraid of being attacked, bring something around to defend yourself with. I'd recommend pepperspray, quite useful, really.

#136 - On 06/07/2009 at 5:00pm by Solidus

don't flatter yourself sweety

#137 - On 06/07/2009 at 6:58pm by emorockerownage

#135: "I'd rather be paranoid than dead." See, that's the thing. I'd rather be dead than live in fear, which is what paranoia is. That's no way to live.

If you need to look, then look. If you need to defend yourself, then defend yourself. I will be right there with you. But don't go looking for monsters in every shadow. The never-ending "heightened state of awareness" eventually dulls your sense of reality and you become LESS safe.

No one said rapes weren't real. Everyone who has complained here has complained about CRYING WOLF, which is a completely different issue. Don't mix the two.

#138 - On 06/07/2009 at 8:51pm by thuryn

i wish i could have seen this.....LMAO

#139 - On 06/07/2009 at 10:51pm by annabobana

first off, it's better to be safe and sorry.

second, the media does that to you.

#140 - On 06/07/2009 at 11:07pm by thisinspiration

I know it's important to be cautious of this kind of thing, but um.. YDI.
I'm pretty sure I could tell the difference between a rapist and a jogger in the middle of the road, but yeaah.
I've gotten scared at that type of thing too, I feel for ya.
Once I was walking to school and I saw a shadow behind me, and I was scared for a few seconds, but I didn't go so far as to scream. It turned out to be a kid that went to my school, haha. =P
That would have been hilarious to see though! hahaha :D

#141 - On 06/07/2009 at 11:11pm by heyyimkell

You all need to get a grip and just envision the scenario.

This would've made my day, either as you or the jogger..it's hilariously stupid.

#142 - On 06/07/2009 at 11:25pm by 26242

Haha, flailing your arms around? No wonder he had to stop in uncontrollable laughter :) YDI

#143 - On 06/08/2009 at 8:33am by vipera_23

#140: I think the media does, indeed, "do that to you."

The older I get, the more I believe that there's no substitute for being able to THINK. If you just REACT to something without thinking, odds are that you are about to do something stupid. Think things through. Better still, think these things through in advance and try to have some sort of plan.

As "Earl" once said, "Runnin's not a plan! Runnin's what you do when a plan FAILS!"

#144 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:39pm by thuryn

That's funny.

Still, be aware of your surroundings.

#148 - On 06/13/2009 at 11:22am by tari_joon

Ha!
That'll save you, you sense an attacker and give him a clear shot to your vitals!

(btw, the guy above is a jackass)
