Today, I turned in my best painting yet for a scholarship competition. For once in my life, I was actually proud of a piece I'd done. I ended up losing the scholarship to some dickface who'd basically just glued together some crap from the dollar store and called it conceptual art. FML
Today, my roommate asked for my opinion of her new painting. The same painting I hand-painted for over ten hours. She apparently thought it was a gift. She won't give it back. FML
Today, I found out that my art project, the one I've been working on for the last two weeks and the first piece I felt really comfortable about turning in, was stolen out of the art cupboard. FML
Today, I moved into my new apartment complex. I left some items including a cherished painting my best friend made for me outside the front door while I moved furniture into my bedroom. When I went back outside, someone had kicked a huge hole in the painting. Welcome to the neighborhood. FML
Today, after months of hard work, planning, and preparation, I held the reception for my first art show at a gallery. Nobody showed up. FML
Today, my wife sold her first painting and was so proud of herself, until she found the buyer online and realized his YouTube page is full of videos where he paints over horrible art and turns it into good art. Her painting was on it, and yes, he visibly improved it and yes, my wife is raging at me. FML
Today, it was my first big time art show. To celebrate I went out to lunch with some people whose work was also there. When we got back, police were everywhere. Someone had broken in and stolen all of the art. All except mine. Even burglars don't want my art. FML
Today, I finished a painting I'd spent 3 weeks working on for an exhibition. When I came back from lunch, my cat was perched above it on my desk. He looked at me, then down at the painting, then jumped down onto it. He slipped and smeared the wet paint everywhere, ruining the whole thing. FML
Today, I spent the whole night and day painting a portrait of my girlfriend. Being proud of it, I sent it to her hoping she would appreciate it. I spent hours working on that picture only for her to reply with, "That's not me, is it?" FML
Today, I lost an art contest to some talentless arsepipe whose piece was literally just a broken heart crudely drawn in her own blood. FML

Ive done some drawings of my own in the past in which I wasn't able to put a signature small enough but distinguishable (with the medium I used). While it's a good idea, you sometimes can't put one in there. Or you forget.

Sign the back. Document the process. Have a few witnesses. I feel terrible about the insane level of injustice OP experienced, I really do. However, it is a bit of a YDI for failing to protect their creation. Want to bet Mrs. Rowling filed for a copyright before the proverbial ink dried on her first book?

I sign the back, put my mark on the front (my initials intertwined), and if it's a particularly good painting? I'll spit in the paint. They can DNA test my bloody painting if they don't believe it's mine. :P

I'm seriously hoping you were there at this point. Unless you're not old enough to drive where you live, could you not have proven the painting was yours with a license when the judges came to see it... or something like that?

That is plagiarism. Taking a person's idea/creation and claiming it as your own. Contact the art gallery and give them the proper information.
