The leader of my church (my monsignor) is the ultimate in practicing what he preaches, and also understanding that humans will make mistakes. It's human nature. He preaches loving others as you love yourself and compassion. He has shown all of that time and again. Christianity does NOT breed hypocrites. Maybe you've seen poor examples of so-called "Christians" in your life, but I can assure you that not all of us are hypocrites. There are people like us who actually talk and walk.

Jesus took a prostitute as one of his closest friends. He healed people that others saw as unclean or unworthy. He also forgave. It amazes me when people who claim to be Christian look down upon others.

I actually watched a DEEPLY religious family drop one of the members of their family because she came out of the closet. Her friends and family just dropped her. I was just kind of like, "DUH?" My monsignor never treated her any differently, though. Just because she's gay doesn't mean she's any less religious or active in the church.

Ive seen so many that I thought were good just turn on others because they weren't good enough. I almost left the church at that point. If it hadn't been for my monsignor's actions, I don't think I could have stayed. Especially in a church that taught so much love and compassion for others.

When atheists focus our critiques on conservative or extremist religions, we get accused of ignoring the tolerant progressive ones and lumping all religions together. But when we do criticize progressive or moderate religions, we're accused of mean-spirited overkill, of alienating people who could be our allies.

I agree with idkweird all the way. there are tons of Christians (or very religious people in general) who act high and mighty, which in turn means they think everyone else is below them. even as a kid (12? maybe) people told me they would "pray for my soul" and told me i was evil because of my beliefs. i have rarely met a relgious person who practices everything they preach.

I basically see it like this: If you get enough people together in one "group" you're going to have some bad apples. In religion, those bad apples get to use "religion" or "God" to hide their disgusting hypocrisies or judgements.

There is always good and bad when you get enough people together.

That's what I was taught as a child. I often go out of my way to treat people how I'd like to be treated. It's why I'm so open about my life and my flaws. I try not to be deceitful because I wouldn't want that.

Those parts of the Bible are the things I really took to heart, and luckily I didn't grow up in a church/school that taught fire and brimstone. A lot of what I was taught boils down to "live your life as a good person."

I was raised Catholic. I see it from the inside. I was using the Jesus taking a prostitute as a friend to prove that exact point. That our religions were based on a man who forgave and didn't judge.

I grew up in a church that taught us not to judge. One that had real people willing to share their mistakes with others. Even in a church like that, I still saw people judge.

It took me a while to come to terms with my religion/spirituality. Though I align myself with Catholocism, I feel I am a much more spiritual person than a religious one. I feel like when the rules start getting added, that's where religions go wrong. People use those rules to condemn others. I, personally, have no right to condemn others. Even though Im completely happy with my life and have little to no regrets about anything Ive done, that doesn't make me any better than anyone else.

My bf was raised in a church where you definitely did not have premarital sex. From his perspective, all it did was lead to younger marriages that, a lot of times, were unhappy and awful. He also grew up in a church where divorce was unacceptable. He still got one, and in turn, showed others that in some situations, it's ok. He said that with his ex-wife, they had spent so much of their time making sure there was no passion in their relationship (because even kissing can lead to other things), that once they got married, they were basically trying to force the passion. He said it was like trying to sleep with a sister.

I choose to never have to go through that, and Im ok with that. I have my own personal relationship with God, and he/she does not judge me for enjoying myself.
