Hey everyone! OP here. Thanks for the support. :) some of these posts made me chuckle a bit. I did stick up for her and made him apologize. It was uneasy the rest of the night but I don't regret it. Bye!! P.S It was towards me. He was in fact calling her a "beggar". Hope I cleared some things up!

Maybe it's just me, but I figured he was saying this to the girlfriend about his son, like as a bad way of trying to get on her good side. I guess "he looked her up and down" could mean he did that and approved and thought her in a higher class than his son, or it could be that he thought she was the ugly one and in a lower class than his son. Either way it's a stupid comment to make.
