Today, a coworker left a chocolate cake on the "free food" table in the office. I had a slice. She's just called to ask if she left her grandmother's birthday cake at work. She made it from scratch. Now I'm baking a new cake in the office kitchen. FML

Today, I spent hours baking a multi-layered, detailed cake from scratch for my mom's birthday. It took two seconds for my dog to devour the cake while I picked up a spoon I dropped on the floor. FML

Today, at work, a customer cried because the cake I made her was not "exactly" the same as the display. I'm the one who made the display and it was the same but the display cake had faded a bit, since it had been there for a month. I'd mentioned this to the customer when she placed the order. FML

Today, my mother in-law made dessert. It was a beautiful chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, and every other thing had chocolate in it. I'm deathly allergic to chocolate and she knows this. FML

Today, my boss brought us some small cakes from a recent trip to China. I opened mine and noticed a little foil packet wrapped with the cake, so I thought it was a powdered topping. I had a couple of bites before my coworker told me it was actually a desiccant to keep the cakes fresh. FML

Today, it was my co-worker's birthday but she told me not to mention it. Feeling bad for her, I went out to buy her a card, a present, and even a small cake. It turns out that there was actually a party during our lunch break, and I was the only one in our office not invited. FML

Had anyone else eaten a slice yet? While it was in the "free food" section, I'm always hesitant to take the first piece of something, unless the person who brought it is directly offering. If other people had eaten it first, it's not solely your fault, and you'd be under no obligation to replace it (though that is kind of you). Truly, putting it there in the first place was her fault, so you're still under no obligation.

OP, you are a good hearted person to want to correct that. But I doubt that your employer pays you to bake replacement birthday cakes. You may wind up in trouble with your boss over this. Your coworker was an idiot if she left unattended a cake on the table used for shared treats and didn't expect it to get shared. Nowhere in OP's FML did she say the cake had "Happy Birthday" on it or candles, so I assume it did not have any signs of being a birthday cake.

Dummy! You don't have to bake a whole new cake -- you just have to bake one slice! Even better would be to insert a wedge of styrofoam and cover it with frosting.
