Today, I was taken to the hospital after I fell down the stairs. The physician who saw me bit his lip and said he would have to amputate my foot, and I fainted in terror. One of the nurses later told me to "learn to take a damn joke." FML

Today, after coming home from the hospital after I fractured my foot, I fell in the bathroom and dislocated my wrist. The ER doctor couldn't stop laughing. FML
Today, I was at the doctor's getting some skin scraped off the bottom of my foot for some tests. As soon as the doctor grabbed my foot, it tickled and I accidentally kicked him in the face. During this, the blade sliced my foot open. FML
Today, I fell down the stairs and landed heavily on my foot. Because I wasn't crying, my mom refused to take me to the hospital. It took me an hour of agony to convince her. It turned out to be broken in three different places. FML
Today, I fell down a flight of stairs. The guy behind me was kind enough to ask if I was okay. He then called his friends over so they could laugh at me. FML
Today, I went to the doctor for a routine check-up. When the nurse took my blood pressure, I passed out, and fell off the table. FML
Today, I visited the hospital with my boyfriend to have an injury checked. When the doctor removed the band-aid, my boyfriend started screaming and passed out. I had to get him out of the room using a wheelchair. The "injury" is a cut on his finger. FML
Today, I woke up in hospital. Apparently, I fell down the stairs, broke 3 ribs, one toe, and hit my head so much that 12 stitches were needed. I also blacked out for an hour before my husband found me covered in blood. Recovery should take about a month and a half. FML
Today, I was rushed to the ER due to a very swollen foot and high fever. The doctors said I just have a tissue infection but my parents believe I have a flesh eating disease. I can hear them discussing my future with an amputated leg. FML
Today, while I was on the bus, my foot fell asleep. When we arrived at my stop, I stood up and limped to the front of the bus. As I walked down the steps, I tripped, fell, and smashed my nose into the ground. The driver just laughed and drove away. FML
Today, since my family and friends always make fun of me for being a wuss when it comes to pain, when I stubbed my toe, I made a point to not scream or complain in any way. Instead, I vomited and fainted. FML

Being a doctor, he should know not to make such jokes. Not everyone takes them.

I agree with you but after reading a lot of FMLs with people who were joking this case doesn't have much weight in my opinion

If anything, medical humour should be between doctors not the between doctor and a patient. A joke to lighten the mood I can understand. Something as horrible as losing a limb (or worse) is just putting your patient in a worse mental condition. It's not professional IMO.

The key is to know how uptight your patient is before you make a joke. People don't want to hear it, but after a long day of dealing with REAL emergencies, a sprained ankle can make eyes roll in an ER.

#76 OP wouldn't know it was only a sprained ankle. My parents, both RNs, thought I just sprained my foot, but a few days later when we went to the urgent care, we found out it was broken. And some people break easily and panic over small things because for them they could be big things. My dad worked as a paramedic and an ER nurse and I know he never rolled his eyes at any one from perfume up a butt to major bullet wounds. These both happened.
