Because it isn't derogatory. if the grandma had used derogatory words against indian or native americans then yes its racist. She could be racist against certain nationalities but the phrase itself isnt racist. Its the grandmothers will, she can exlude whoever she wants.

26: Okay, let's do an experiment. Would you consider it homophobic if the grandmother would've written OP out of the will for being homosexual? After all, they didn't explicitly state that homosexuality would be something bad. All the grandmother did was punish the OP for this specific thing. The only reason one could argue that it wasn't racist, is because humans only have one race, homo sapiens. Even then, this means nothing but semantics. The grandmother considers punishing OP for looking like an Indian, which is, in fact, a derogatory statement about people of such color.

Indian is being used to describe the color she looks like. Maybe the grandma disapproved of her tanning and op went against her wishes. We don't know the full story and its ridiculous to judge the grandmother without the full story. Being a staff on fml you should know this by now.

I didn't read it and think racism, i read it and thought ops grandma is considering taking her out the will because shes an idiot who cant tan properly therefore an embarrassment she doesn't want to be linked to. And would probably spend the inheritance on more tan.

Exactly. Right now this is all heresay and without a more indepth response im not going to judge either party. If op responds and the grandmother did do it purley on dislike for native americans then yes I can admit that is racist. Until then I remain neutral.

Yeah, its like me saying "wow you las pale as a ghost". Is that racist to ghosts? No. Its just a colour. Not always a personal attack on people and their race.

More of a 'don't judge a book by its cover' sort of thing for me.

#38, for current generations in their teens, 20s, 30s, that's probably the correct interpretation. Most of us, thankfully, don't automatically assume something is racist or say racist things spitefully. For someone who grew up in codified racism, like the grandma, it's probably racism.

If I didn't care at all I wouldn't upvote good videos on YouTube. I just happen to not care regarding fml votes or some other sites. But yes Master of Rhetorician I could have worded that different.
