Today, on an important call with a potential employer, he began to speak quieter and quieter until I couldn't hear him at all. When I finally hung up after waiting for 5 minutes, I realized that I had been pressing down on the volume button. FML

While you do deserve this one, you can always call back and say it was a bad connection and you couldn't hear them. Not completely lying anyway.

Oh dear. I hope he hung up before you started yelling "Hello? HELLO?" into the phone.

It never hurts to check during the call.

I definitely would have called back and said that you had a phone mishap. Maybe saved yourself and gotten the job.

The down side of having smart phones.

It's far too easy to do now a days. I get the whole convenience thing, but make it a little less reachable so this doesn't happen, and if you really need to change the volume just say hold on and change it if you even need to look

that's so funny. ive done this a million times but generally its my first thought to increase the volume as it becomes more difficult to hear? why was it not for you OP?
