Today, I went to the store to buy a phone I saw last week. I looked around a little first, then continued to the electronics section. I couldn't find the phone I saw, so I went to leave. Halfway to the exit, I was detained by security and grilled for ages over my "suspicious behaviour". FML

Not finding what you came in for: didn't you know that was an awful crime for business?

That's what happens when you have Rent-A-Cops

Even though you didn't have wrong intentions, I think it was best if you asked an associate for help.

Isn't it sad, though, that people can't feel normal just being in a store looking without someone thinking they're stealing something? It's all because of jackass thieves and bad folks that us normal ones can't just be.

It's better that they are looking, but don't find anyone shop lifting than if they aren't looking and people do shop lift. You would be surprised just how many people actually do shop lift. Over here in the UK at least, some stores have started checking people's bags when they leave (albeit not many stores yet, and I have only seen that where I live). But this is what shoplifters have driven the world too.

You had the right to leave anytime, OP. Especially if the "security" was not the police. They can't legally keep you there and question you without your consent.

That's true. Store security are a joke, and their only real use is to deter criminals and speed dial 911

Retail employees can't legally detain you for stuff like that. They have to SEE you take something, either with a camera or their own eyes. Then they have to maintain line of site. Even then if they try to use force to stop you from leaving it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. You could of blown right by them ******* and they couldn't do anything. Source : 7 years in retail Edir : I just saw it says you live in Canada. Laws could be different there. But in US, this is the policy. I'll leave the comment so other folks can learn from it.

Haha sorry buddy I said the same thing pretty much and ya I live in Canada it's the exact same thing

you are right in a way but the loss prevention is allowed to detain u but you are right they have to watch to make sure u didnt ditch the item. there not allowed to search you as to why they call the police source 10 yrs loss prevention

Loss prevention in canada can only detain if they see the person committing theft. They cannot detain to question on suspicion.

You're not wrong.. but getting all 'I KNOW MY RIGHTS. YOU CAN NOT LEGALLY DO THIS' isn't really going to lower their suspicion.. it actually increases the chance of real cops getting involved..

When I worked in retail we would keep an eye on people we thought were behaving suspiciously, but never ever actually approach them unless we had evidence. I'd have threatened to take legal action, haha!

And then stores wonder why they're losing business.

Yep, this store would lose mine forever.

I'm a security guard and have been schooled in it. What they did is technically illegal, you have every right to just leave. Say am I arrested for anything if not I'm leaving. If they so detain you they have to call the police forthwith and they will do the search procedure. Also they have to visually see you take anything and maintain eye contact until you leave the store. I would contact the owner of the store and notify them their security is unprofessional and a form of harassment. Fyl

Oh, you were looking at phones? Suspcious Behavior. -Security Guards
