Today, I was hired as a student assistant. I was excited, until I learned on my very first day that "Supporting the academic staff in their research" actually meant walking the professor's dog. FML

To cut off as many of the incoming 'money for dog walking, who cares' comments as possible: not only did OP take the position because it was an opportunity to further their studies, but not all student assistants get paid money-what the student gets to learn is considered payment.

I don't know much about your situation ( whether this is your first 'proper' job etc) but maybe you can look at this as a sort of 'paying your dues'? Nobody starts at the top, you have to work your way up! Maybe this job will lead to better things or develop into the sort of role you want in time? You may also get to learn a lot in the periods where you're not out with the dog that will help develop your learning. :-/

hey at least you get to play with a dog for work (if you get paid), if you don't and just want to learn more, FYL. Maybe talk with the professor?

Guess you have to prove yourself competent before they give you any actual duties

And walking the dog will show competence in what? Walking?

I'm a research assistant too, and I've been asked to look after a dog too lol. Can't complain; it was better than coding :p

Just give it time, you'll become more involved later on, and if not, ask if you could work with a different professor?

You are assisting his research by allowing him more time to do it. It's your first day and maybe he doesn't have anything else for you to do yet. Heck one day by boss didn't have anything for me to do in the metal shop so he had me fix some electrical issues with a spa, another slow day he had me and another new guy weed whack the field in the back. Think of it as diversifying your skill set.

You gotta start somewhere, OP. :) Perhaps he's testing your patience for a future task.

At least you're getting paid! Look at the bright side!
