Today, away at college, I called my grandmother to hear how she was doing after her knee surgery. She ended up talking about Hooters and how I should work there because of my "rare body". When I mentioned I've been studying computer science, earning a 3.8 GPA, she replied, "But you're a girl." FML
I agree, your life sucks 38 441

Well, she certainly has an archaic way of thinking.

It pisses me off when people say that. Being old does NOT make it ok to say those reprehensible things with her outdated values and mindset.

Sometimes you have to excuse the older generation, OP.

She comes from that generation. I would just educate her. Good for you for going in to computer science! Friend of mine did and it is NO joke.

Why can't you do both? I just got my Master's degree and have worked at Hooters for 10 years

Don't listen to your grandma. Keep doing what you are interested in and prove people wrong that girls cannot do science based subjects. You will be one of them who slowly destroy that stereotype. Also you can take it as a compliment that your grandma thinks you have a nice body ^^

That is the thing about old people though, they don't look at the world the way it is now with women doing jobs like that. Don't let it get you down you're doing great OP!!! Nice to hear about women going into STEM jobs there aren't enough of us there yet!!

You could do both if you had the time. Nothing wrong with that, I'm sure your grandma was just trying to help...even it is a little creepy that she suggested your flaunt your rack

I would listen to her, she has more experience in life.

Aren't there few girls in the stream. It doesn't have to be sexist, it could be a compliment.

Hmmm... wait, rare body and 3.8 GPA on CS... Where is the "I envy you button", or "I want to marry you" button?
