Sitcom dad

Today, my wife is convinced I don't love my daughter. Why? She got her first boyfriend recently, and I was friendly with the lad, instead of doing the stupid "overprotective dad" routine. Apparently, not feeling the need to act like a dumbass sitcom character means I secretly resent my family. FML

We want out children to be happy. So, why does scaring or being mean to their S.O. help them be happy? It drives them away from us and ruins relationships with our children. Funny enough they will chose a person who makes them feel comfortable and loved like their parents.

Your wife has some backward ideas. I bet this isn't the first time.

She's so stupid! There's nothing that makes boys more unattractive to girls than parental approval.

that is your role. you don't have to be scary or rude but you do need to establish yourself so he knows you're involved in her life. there are so many other psychological reasons on why you should I suggest speaking with a specialist or reading up on it before deciding not to. it encourages your daughter to be protective of herself and it encourages the s.o. to be respectful of her boundaries. he needs to know that she has people who will come after him if he does something wrong.
