OP - I am sorry that your Mom is both an idiot and a hypocrite. We do not get to choose our parents. Unfortunately pointing out to mom that she is an idiot for denying her son the right to a better education and a hypocrite for bragging about her inheritance while saying she doesn’t want you to be around “rich snobby people” won’t help fix the problem. If you really want to attend the magnet school, see if you can figure out if there is really some other reason mom tossed the papers - For example is she afraid it might cost more in supplies or clothes or whatever or would she have to drive you there and back. If you can find out the real issue then you have more chance of persuading her. Unfortunately in your position persuasion is the only tool you have that will work. By the way, just because people expect an inheritance does not mean they are going to get one or that it will be soon by any means. Often by the time the last parent dies most of the money is gone and sometimes the property is either mortgaged or not as valuable as anticipated. There are people who manipulate others with an implied promise of an inheritance that either don’t have the means or may not choose to leave it to the person expecting it. So, the only money you can count on is what you can earn - and the best way to that is through a good education preparing for a good career.

She might still be doing what she thinks is best for you. She might be getting money from her folks at some point in the future, but maybe that will also go to you in another way. I would avoid sending my child to a posh school where all the students are snobs because you can always acquire knowledge, but when you're a teenager that is when you develop a personality. Also if you are smart, which you clearly are, she might be saving the money she actually currently has for your university.

Am I the only one wondering why schools exist for magnets? I've never heard of such a thing and didn't know one had to have special schooling for magnets. Regardless, what OP's mother did is disgusting. I can't stand people that get handed a ton of money without having to work at all and rub it in the face of others. But to do it to her own kid is just infuriating.

I hope you cam contact the school and work something out so you can attend . . . Then be sure to disown your mother
