Finger on the pulse

Today, I started a new job as a receptionist at a nursing home. When two men came in saying, "We're here for Mr. Christensen," I paged him to come to the front desk. Apparently, these men had come from the funeral home to pick up Mr. Christensen's body. I was completely unaware that anyone had died. FML

I feel horrible for laughing this hard. My sincere condolences to friends and family of Mr Christensen, though.

I hate to laugh at this, but... You're a newbie and you were not informed. Don't feel too bad.

Awkward! Not your fault, though, you couldn't have known if nobody informed you.

There is a certain logic in being mortified in front of morticians.

It's a honest mistake since you're new there. Don't give yourself a hard time.

Look on the bright side, OP. At least Mr. Christensen didn't walk up to the desk after you paged him.

it sucks that happened to you. recently, i-a housekeeper at a high end nursing home- was asked to cover a 2nd shift receptionist over the weekend. i was given an hour of training and i figured out how to prevent these mistakes after having a similar issue the first day. My advice to share with you: if you dont recognize the name, check if there is a directory of residents. they also sometimes keep a list somewhere nearby of who has expired and even a day by day of who is leaving to go to an appt and such. when in doubt- ask the person if they are looking for a resident or employee and ask what for and then contact the supervisor or nurse and pass the message on. it's an awkward situation, op, but you arent the first to make that mistake nor will you be the last. dont be discouraged, happens to a lot of us and it is common in a lot of nursing homes.

Where I live there's retirement village next to retirement village and retirement villages on the other side of the road. It's such a shame it won't be the last time what OP had to experience happens.

You're new to the position there is it going to be some hiccups. People may be upset depending on the mistake but they should be understanding.

Jeez that's not a great first day experience. Hope they understood the confusion and it turned out ok

That sounds pretty threatening if he was alive. Like he's gonna be assassinated or something

As a receptionist your institution doesn't sound very professional. You should have never been left out of the loop. I'm very sorry you had to experience that. They are the worst days.
