Well, since fingernails are less than an inch long ... I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had a similar experience a time or two (I build guitars out of old wood, it gets messy on occasion) and it's basically the worst. Like getting two hundred tattoos on the point of your elbow at once.

This has happened to me before, put rubbing alcohol on it before and after you pull it out, then tightly wrap your finger in a bandaid because it will be sore for a few days after and the pressure will relieve the pain
