I thought it was pretty much common sense that if someone has scissors near your head don't do anything to piss them off... maybe that's just me though...?

You could have stopped after mom. It's never a good idea to piss off your mother while you live with her. My teenage step-kid is struggling to learn that with his mom. He doesn't realize that no matter how good he thinks his argument is about why he shouldn't have to do his homework or clean his room, it's always going to end poorly for him when he backtalks his mother.
