Doesn't necessarily have to be sexist, perhaps he was just insinuating it's a field more in demand, in a relatively similar aspect. It happens in any engineering field, but you really just have to stick with your passion.
I don't really get how this is sexist. He's not forcing you to change your focus. Seems more like you're letting it get to you.
